Screams without explanation. A dead boarder. An investigator knows something is off about the case…
When beautiful and mysterious Rebecca is found murdered in her extended-stay suite, the Rockport police are baffled by the apparent senseless brutality of the crime. The only clue to what happened to the young woman appears to be the way she died—a blow to the back of her head, with a baseball bat or golf club.
Detective Inspector Richard Watson must now follow a confusing trail of clues that seem to lead in every direction, even when exhaustion sets in and his mind plays tricks on him. Like the great Sherlock Holmes, he must entice the clues out of thin air!
What the detective and his assistant find is shocking, but the most shocking thing of all is what happens when a detective finally puts together the unlikeliest of clues. Only his long-suffering assistant can help him now.
What happened to Rebecca Jones—was she a victim of an abusive ex-husband or was something more sinister the cause for her death?
Can the detective find a way to put together the seemingly senseless clues in time to solve the case once and for all?
The Case of the Hated Body is a spine-tingling race through multiple suspects, each with a motive for killing the young woman. As each is cleared, join the detective as he searches for the truth of what happened that dreadful night…but don’t read it alone in the dark!
Carrie Marsh writes cozy mysteries and suspense novels, along with occasional blog post on her website. Her objective is to entertain, and amuse people that read her books. Her approach is to combine witty ideas with excellent writing skills.
She lives in Florida, USA. When she's not writing, she likes to take long walks with her dog observing the world around her. Her inspirations for her stories come from these long walks.
This is only the second book I've read from this author and the first in this particular series. The writing is better than it was in the other book but still needs a little work. The pros: It's a quick read, free of violence and sex. The cons: The characters aren't developed very well. The ending was abrupt. One minute they're discussing something and the next they're arresting someone that wasn't even considered a suspect. Conclusion: I'll probably read another one in the series to see if the writing, character and plot development get better.
The mystery is too simple and the writing is too basic. Repeated use of declarative sentence structure, stilted dialog, abundant use of "said" and " tired ", makes me wonder if an editor of even a knowledgeable reader was used. On the other hand it was free.
This was a quick read that basically started with a woman's scream being heard by the lady owner of the boarding house.. No one else claims to have heard the scream. The woman that they thought screamed is in her room and says she did not scream. The next morning things change. The police are called in and everyone is a suspect. The setting is Rockport, Massachusetts.
On a personal note - I don't get the title. I didn't think the character was hated. I am a fan of Rockport, Massachusetts. It's a quaint seaport town in northern Massachusetts.
When an innkeeper answers a cry of distress from one of her guests, she finds nothing amiss in the suite. The next day, that same guest is found dead in her room. Who killed the young woman and why didn't she cry out as she had before?
A lot of ground was covered in a very short cosy. I wish the author had taken this to a full-scale novel and built up the detectives' characters.
It seems whatever you have done in your life at some point catches up with you….eventually. Life is sometime out of control and desperation takes over. A small town that is normally so quiet wakes up in the wake of a murder. The suspects many, the motives….not much . This was my second book by this author to read, but it will not be my last. Storyline flow was fluid and characters will be even more developed as this series continues.
The Rockport Heights Hotel is the main attraction to the local area. Guests can stay up to 6 months at a time but no longer. Jessica hears a scream on morning from Rebecca's room, a guest but when asked said she didn't hear it. Then Rebecca's body is found by the maid Judy. When the police arrived another guest, Julian Rhys, was kneeling by the body. Julian is an investigative reporter from Chicago. He told the police Rebecca was hiding from her abusive husband. But things don't add up to Inspector Richard Watson. As they dig deeper into everyone's story, it comes to light that there is a missing lottery ticket worth ten million dollars that Rebecca had. Can the Inspector figure out the truth of who killed Rebecca and the lottery ticket? Read the book to find out. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
I hope she continues to write these cozy mysteries, I love them.
Thankfully Ms Marsh knows how to weave a tale, without all the sex and violence that are in a lot of books.
Ms Marsh's books are a great way to wind down after a long hard day.
The Case of The Hated Body left me guessing right to the end. It's a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and doing the wrong things, that bring several people under suspicion. But in the end, the good guys catch the bad guy.
A short cozy mystery. The idea was good. I was surprised by who the actual murderer was but, it needs some editing. Someone can't be talking in the room when their bags & them are gone from the hotel wrong name being used. Usually I can get past editing errors but pioning? Also, the investigating bugged me a bit. The cop's thinking wasn't very smart to me.
I have enjoyed other books by Marsh so this won't get me to stop reading her books. I received and free e-copy of this book for an honest review.
This was a quirky little murder mystery. I personally don't get a perspective of who the assistant or the Inspector really are. The Climax was disappointing and if this is going to be a series, the character will have to be better developed. Reading the story, I never really felt apart of it, and at points I felt like I was reading a case file, third person and impersonal. The storyline and plot were excellent, but the author did not quite pull it off. One big question, though, why was the body hated?
I am not going to bother trying to summarize the plot beyond a woman has been murdered in a hotel room and the police are looking for her murderer. They jump from clue, to idea, to clue, to guessing what has occurred. Fractured writing, difficult to follow. The characters do not really exist except as a name to hang a thought on. The title has nothing to do with the content and the picture on the cover has no connection either. Did not like.
Take the detectives of Midsomer Murders, now make them American instead, and you have the detectives for this series. Add in pretentious owners of a "mansion" turned into a hotel, a woman screams, denies it, then is found brutally murdered the next morning. ...and no one has any clue as to how a murderer got into the hotel and killed her. The ending was anti-climatic it and sudden; it was a first attempt at a series and, in my opinion, failed
This book is ideal for reading in the evening. Good twists. Unexpected ones. I would easily give a rating of at least a 4.
I just finished the case of the hated body. Not sure the title fits but read was good. Perfect for an evening relaxation. I read every evening before bed. This was a good read. I would easily give it a 4.
This was a good story. It was kinda more of a dialogue between the two main cops than something I could immerse myself in. I prefer a lot more action, tension and character interaction. I must say the twist was unexpected. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
It was short but interesting. A murder occurred on a small town and the detectives were eager to solve it since it was not a recurring situation.
That being said, the author takes us in a journey with the detectives t solve the murder. I enjoyed the fact that the killer was not the most obvious. Overall it was a nice read. I'd definitely read the complete series.
Sometimes I got frustrated because it seemed to be written in a hurry? But anyway actually I enjoyed the book a little bit it's like easy reading and sometimes that's what we need, this time I did :-) wasn't sure about the ending until it happened! Definitely a twist. Get the book read it enjoy!
i read half the book one night, when i went to bed, i had so many questions! then when i finished it, i was. amazed and couldn't believe it! this is an amazing book and i give it 200,000/10!
THE CASE OF THE HATED BODY by Carrie Marsh. A Sleepless Detective Murder. The setting is tranquel, the beauty of the Manson and hills is endless, guests can stay for 6 months. Then why did Rebecca end up murdered. A nice cozy mystery as all of Carrie's are to enjoy. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
The Case of the Hated Body by Carrie Marsh is a wonderful mystery, with an intriguing twist in the end. I had no idea who the killer was until the end!!
This is a very quick read. And I am a huge fan of mysteries. But, I must say that for me, this one simply fell flat. I would have liked more character development. The plot did not seem to move for me. I will try another book by this author because I found potential.
Let's just say don't bother....not well written, not a even decent plot, many errors that any reader woukd pick up. Like how could there be a "winning" lottery ticket that was "claimed" but the ticket wasn't turned in.
I loved this book. I have it 5 stars because it deserves it. When I first started reading it I wasn't sure if I was going to like it , but then the more I read the more I couldn't put it down until the end.! Keep up the good work. 😊
Honestly, I am still not sure. I think I may have missed something along the way ... hope you have better luck. That said, the author presented an easy read, which was entertaining. It just caused me some confusion. I don't want to give anything away so I'll stop now.
The more I read the more I wanted more. It was a great story and kept me guessing. I couldn't wait to reach the ending and see if I was right. Thanks for a great storyline and can't wait for more I know they will be just as good.
A quick read but really not as good as the Millerfield series. Not really for me as it felt disappointing after reading Carrie's other books. Got this off Instafreebie and am glad that I did as would have been disappointed otherwise
The clues are all there, the police don't check up on everyone, and without a confession they never would. Strange story with no real plot to entice a reader to the end.
It was a quick read but I suppose just not enough suspense for me. Someone gets murdered the small town detectives go through a lot of clues and info to find the murderer. But it was also kind of bland but with romantic details.
Kinda slow. Kinda predictable. From the start you knew who the murderer was. I was not impressed with the detectives characters. Rather portrayed as simple minded. The misdirection was forced and obvious.
Good story. Good character development and plot. Had me guessing until the end of the story. This author is new to me but I plan to read more of her books.
