I have mixed feelings about this book. On the surface, the book looks gorgeous, with lovely photos of the finished cloths and clearly illustrated details of basic stitches, for those who are beginners. The designs of the cloths, although not super varied, look really nice and the patterns seem like they'd be interesting to knit up.
However, all the patterns call for fingering or super fine-weight cotton yarn, which is not something you're going to find in stores in the US, where worsted or medium-weight cotton is most common. The specific brands mentioned in the book can only be ordered online from stores outside the US, and the closest alternatives I could find are a tiny bit thicker in fine-weight.
Additionally, the patterns all call for needles that don't actually exist!. It says "size 2 (3 mm)." If that's meant to be US 2, then it should be 2.75 mm. If it's supposed to be 3 mm, it would be US 2.5, which exists but is, again, not something you can readily find, except online.
While I'm glad to see a book of such lovely knitting patterns translated into English and sold in the US, the supplies called for just don't translate as easily. I wish this had been accounted for, and maybe the patterns could have been adjusted to work for heavier yarns.
I truly love the way the patterns in this book are written, the variety of options, and the learn-to-knit guidance provided. It’s a good resource for beginners. I would give it a 5-star rating except for the fact that the way the photographs are scattered through the book is confusing. In the Parallelogram pattern pages, for example, there is one photo of a completed project in Parallelogram and one that appears to be Waffle Rib. And in some cases there is never a clear picture of a completed pattern. The photography is visually appealing but as a beginner I would have benefitted from at least one image of each pattern that was fully visible (not folded or draped) with the pattern identified.
I really appreciate the extra math Helle Neigaard did to make it easy for us to knit a dish towel as well as dish cloth. However the photography, while beautiful, did not show the unique stitch pattern of the cloths!
Great for beginners. Pretty patterns with clear written instructions and graphs. They are requiring me to add nine more words before submitting my review, so
