Keith Roberts takes us to the planet Xerxes where the locals have built a long series of locks and canals leading from “The Lake Of Tuonela”, and Mathis is determined to pole all the way to the tunnel in the mountains. Accompanied by a native guide he finds an ancient machine and the price of hubris. “The Five Doors” by Michael Stall posits an alien race which places teleport cylinders on technological planets and links them together - to wage war against each other in order to eliminate each other. An interesting premise. Barrington J. Bayley gives us the pick of the litter with “The Seed Of Evil” where an immortal alien visitor, after refusing to give any secrets to humanity, retires into obscurity. However, a surgeon desirous of the secret of immortality plans to kidnap the alien, dissect him and find the secret. He will wish he hadn’t. Not much of any real weight in this collection other than the tales I’ve reviewed. A lot of prose but more style than substance.

Meh. Stories ranged from uninteresting to "what the heck was the point?" to the barely interesting. Very unimpressed.
