Full Moon Falling by Calinda B. (Favors for the Fallen #1):
FBI Agent Kara Falko can hope that no one saw her rookie mistake. Hell, even she's willing to ask the question of 'what sort of highly trained agent drops their bullets'. Her stealthy approach perhaps ruined by her bumbling mistake, or it could be that she was going to be seen no matter how she'd chosen to approach. Surely it couldn't be the winged giants she thought she saw. Whilst jamming the bullets and magazine back in their correct working order something had put her approach to a screaming halt. Were those same impossible giants now flying above where she'd been put to the ground by a some sort of loud thwacking sound. There was something, if she heard correctly, about 'is she the one'? Of course this begs the question of the one for what, and if the 'she' is none other than her. It needs to be chaulked up as another in a baffling sequence of affairs.
Kara had been different from the other people she'd known. Adopted by a couple who'd treated her as though she was their own. They'd never held her back from the war games she'd been more interested in than the imaginative equivalent her female peers were involved in, those of dolls and tea parties. Her ideas of fun included brandishing her wooden sword whilst chasing the caw of black rook crows that set her alight with boundless energy as she and her messiahs played their own version of tag.
Applying her childhood trades in a culmination of years of imagining herself at war resulted in a Basic Field Training Course at Quantico, training to be a FBI Agent. Her desire to keep a field officer status had been the greatest bane of contention between her and chauvinistic attitudes toward woman in the field operative. Her fears that her error had been witnessed of course had to be confirmed by the worst possible spectator, Agent Douglas Richter (a.k.a. Agent Sphincter), also known as her boss. Sphincter's chauvinism galls her like few things could. Incognito surveillance didn't include some lookout staring dumbfounded as a rookie juggled to get the bits of her weapon back together, but she didn't need to be told that.
Slicing sphincter's head into two pieces wasn't an FBI approved response to a-hole remarks, even if it was done using her old wooden toy sword. It was no secret that he wanted her canned, and it has nothing to do with bullets. Making it through the disparaging and cultured red tape which said, unofficially of course, that women didn't belong in the FBI hadn't come cheaply. So despite how rightful it'd be, shooting a fellow agent in the face wasn't an accepted response. No matter what dribble came out of the mouths of those with the same ilk as sphincter's. If he weren't one of her bosses their little tête-à-tête would go a lot differently.
Kara and colleagues would never have guessed that their sting operation would result in Kara laying near to death, in a coma in a hospital bed that night. Staring down on her body was surreal to the extreme. Subsequent events suggest that it would never have mattered how she bumbled; or how her racing off as the lone ranger in response to the outing of their FBI operative came across their earpieces, that to save him would've always ended up with her being shot. Kara's soul has lived for over a couple millennia. She's been a commander of Valkyrie forces in that time and she's shown things by the couple who'd been the giant winged beings she thought she had hallucinated earlier that night.
Once the cards are on the table and the dust once again settles on what her life was meant to be, or not, Kara can no longer deny or avoid what stares her in the face: her subconscious mind remembered what her conscious mind never could, shaping the activities of a growing child given away at birth. In hindsight and in contention of the life she'd grown to think of as her own, mimicking closely what her soul thought she was meant for, Kara's limitations of a mortal mundane life are lifted to return to her former glory in a span of life measuring in the thousands. But to keep it she'll need to solve the puzzle that will face her. If she can't her wings will be clipped, but none of that will matter. The task she faces will reep the end of an integral part of life if she fails. If she wins she could have the choice of keeping her wings, or move back to wherever being shot was to take her.
The Last of the Jinn by K.N. LEE [Box Set + A Gifted Curse Anthology]:
Poisoned by the clerics, Malah removed the dagger from the head of the guard she'd killed in the hopes of finding the antidote to reverse effects that never ceased. Constantly weakened, but not killed, she dropped her senses lower than her rumbling stomach and away from her sweat drenched skin, to place her palm against her womb. Detecting the two lives of her twins as yet unborn, she needed to keep them safe. She rued the day the next obstacle were created. The stone Reen guards patrolled outside her prison and are much harder to kill. They've already held her captive for far too long. Ridding her body of the constantly administered Parthan poisons, aimed at keeping her weak enough to contain, would help relieve the ache of being kept from her home. Fully flushing it would have to wait. She barely has enough time to complete her plan.
Finally producing enough power to temporarily freeze the Reen, Malah next worked at summoning her favourite Blessing, Yolie, for it's been years since they were last able to unite. It was the first in a longest time since she last smiled. Curiosity did sometimes kill the cat. Malah's whim to see a new planet and its unknown civilisation had been what started the horrible, ordeal. One look at Yolie's expression when advised they were on Partha revealed the folly Malah had made in travelling to a planet not their own. There's still a small chance that the Temple would remain unaware of her flight to freedom. With Yolie now summoned she held the smallest ember of hope that they could fly from her Parthan prison. Two innocent lives, plus countless others, were likely at stake. It isn't just her own life that provides the greatest need. Malah knew intimately what is at stake; her family gone and leaving behind the greatest sorrow at not being able to fly with them ever again.
Her hands shook at both the anticipation and the blood of the last person she'd had to kill still marring her hands. She would hopefully soon have the time to wash her hands, but she'd never be able to do the same with her guilt. No matter the necessity it would still be there in her mind, presently coming in at nine guards and a cleric she'd sent to meet their fates. But at the moment she had to make everything else in her conscience redundant, for in her womb she carries what is the current last hope for the Jinn. Fathered by a man who had betrayed so completely the love their mother had carried for him. Placing her hands in Yolie's, Malah gave the last shred of power in her body to provide the Blessing now necessary for Yolie to shift to a large enough size that could fly them both away. Finding a place on Yolie's back, her arms held like clamps around her neck, an explosion rocks the Temple behind them.
Slow Burn by Amy Lee Burgess [Box Set Exclusive]:
With its world shattering meaning Erin O'Brien distends her diaphragm in preparation for the scream that is the Wail of a banshee. As much as any, including the respective victim, might hope and want to forestall or stop the death it speaks of, when the banshees cries its often too late: death itself has already arrived, awaiting what none onsite have the power to prevent: or do they? Banshees may not be the cause of the deaths their premonitions provide, despite the often misplaced animosity they can encounter, but it didn't stop Erin from feeling that same sentiment.
She ascribed to the notion that if she failed to intervene then she contributed in at least some fashion. Only in the light that it's possible to make a difference can she consider moving with it. In essence she wanted to be able to convert the curse into a potential gift, to be able to give what wouldn't be available if she didn't receive the Wailing. Her first vision had come whilst she stood vigil ten minutes into her grandmother's burial service, there'd nearly been no reprieve between the former O'Brien woman passing and the next inheriting. Perhaps if her mother still lived it might have gone to her instead. Instead Erin had gotten the name, the place and the cause, all as her knees buckled right there at the gravesite.
Only Firefighter Duke Johnson's Captain (Cap, as he's affectionately known by those who knew him) knew of the perfect matching of his vocation with his strange gift. Instead of fear, weird looks and reporting to the higher powers that be, he instead only ever got encouragement from the man. They colluded to keep it from others' knowledge. They each still held the bad tastes in their mouths concerning how the play had gone when his prior partner, Riko, had observed too much. He'd been chased in his years since his fourteenth birthday had come and gone, chased by rumours and legal wheeling and dealing to prove he wasn't an arsonist or pyromaniac.
In the current situation it was a child that he'd hope to be able to help. Only the family pet was meant to have been left inside the burning house. Obviously someone had failed to supervise the girl of five, unwilling to accept the loss of likely her favourite companion. So whilst he couldn't do anything to change the asphyxiating smoke he could stop any flames that might be close enough to lick and kiss at the skin. Having his own flame that circulated and buzzed throughout his body, Duke opened his gift as he charged toward the girl's bedroom.
As he ran his flame drew in the little flames of the larger conflagration. It isn't a pleasurable sensation but it was something he'd long since gotten use to. No sooner had he reached his intended location had the dire timing been revealed by the sight of the melting soles on the little girl's shoes. There she lay with the family dog wrapped in her arms, courage beyond her years. The body of the fire was encircling the motionless duo in readiness to devour. Duke roared his presence, inviting the flames to try and consume him instead. Uncaring of the target the fire diverted it's course, as he knew it would, like calling to like. His world was about to become one of pain; but unlike the girl and her dog, he was built to live through it, and they were not. At least he hoped so.
Arriving in Fairhaven, where she'd been guided to on this first outing of her new life, Erin was barely collecting her only remaining worldly goods when the Wail hit. Described by her grandmother the premonitions were the Wailing of the bygone past when banshees we're said to speak of the deaths soon to occur, but occurring before their aloted time. Asphyxiation, the roar of a conflagration and the scent of burnt hair overtook her senses as an all over body pain hit. Flailing in the throws of her Wail, those nearby could do no more than stick their hands over their ears as the pitch of a banshee's cry, near to bursting their eardrums, wracked their brains with ear-splitting pain.
Impossibly, Erin reaches the only logical conclusion. That although she was still in the processes of getting through the first Wailing, she was being assaulted by another. One with a more immediate need? With one thing leading to another Erin would soon be in the place where her current Wails would be centered. The prior Wail had brought her to Fairhaven to hopefully stop a murder. Upon arrival the niggling of her trip there had aroused a full-blown new Wail. Something had changed so that now it seemed like she was either having an extension of the first, or a new victim altogether.
In an arousing several degrees of separation, two people haunted by pasts both linked and different are spelled out extremely well by this novella tale of fate and destiny: where sometimes the hardest choices bring the greatest return for which you can but hope that it's nature will be positive instead of the expected negative. Sometimes those with difficult lives are rewarded for the sacrifices they make. Admittedly it can also be that karma keeps trying to make it's point more and more heartfelt. Its times like these when you have to stop every so often to smell the roses otherwise you never get to smell anything other than the crap.
An environment rich with potential in paranormal activity and drama is introduced in a slow burn until the incineration point is reached. Where the very smoke and air itself alights. Fairhaven could be a smorgasbord of supernatural abilities that could be harnessed in ordinary ways to create a tv styled drama. Where the antecedents are the usual garden variety, that then gets helped along by the people migrating there that have in them different gifts. Special because it's population is slowly building up to be very unique and diversified. Magic brings hurt, painful memories and amazing possibilities in a serendipitous romp of romanticised choreography by this first of Amy's works that I've read. The emotional language and content description makes it a pleasure to read, and enjoyable to feel and empathise with. A significant addition to the box set for both reasons of entertainment and the way it chronicles the magic within.
Overall Review Continued:
At less than a child's pocket money allowance, Chronicles of Magic couldn't be a better economic choice for fantasy fans. Even if it contained only the three stories I chose to include in the review then the wisdom of the purchase price would still remain. If you're a fan of any single author then the same can still be said in support. Four firsts in a series, another is a story further along in it's series, four exclusive stories currently unavailable anywhere else, plus one more available only herein and in a short anthology of her own stories, and you have a ready-cooked smorgasbord of reasons as to why it should be near to the top of your TBR list. Add in the draw-card names of authors with a ranging variety of success in selling popularity and the sheer number of publications, all with high average ratings and significant numbers of appreciative reader reviews and there's every reason you'll need to buy the set before ever examining the value of the storylines.
These indeed become the icing on a very tasty cake. Not only are you provided with the means to intelligently test drive ten authors and five series, there's the very effective economical rationale for adding it to your libary. On that purely objective basis, you have at your reading fingertips an anthology box set with over twelve-hundred pages at an estimated cost of less than point-zero-eight cents a page. Furthermore, its available through Kindle Unlimited's subscription hire service at the free-to-read setup therein. But overarching that its priced at a rate that means it is absurd to not take the opportunity to permanently add another book(s) with roughly over twenty-five hours of reading escapism and fun. Given enough of a break between servings and you've got five standalone tales that could be read more than once without the need to go ahead and read multiple stories again, because the respective story is part of a bigger saga; not that you can't do so if you choose. Finally, there's the hope that the three examples includes herein show the value of it's content.
I voluntarily reviewed this book and I have not been compensated in any way.
This book contains 10 stories - some full and some novellas that are either magical or paranormal in some way. Overall the book is a great bargain and contains some really good stories - I only found one that I didn't enjoy.
Full Moon Falling - Calinda B Kara Falko needs to decide on the future - can she save Ace Diamante and save existence? Can she shoot her fiance in the chest to save her own life?
I LOVED this story - it was well written and I loved the twists and turns in the story. Right until the end I had no idea how it was going to finish.
Mirror Mirror - Susan Stec A story of a sadistic psychopath and a mirror obsession.
I really didn't enjoy this story and just never really understood what was going on half of the time. You might want to skip this one as I felt it brings down the entire collection of books.
Barely Magic - Catherine Vale Angela Mason works for the Order of Protection, and Cole Avery is a mercenary brought in to help find a missing person.
I LOVED this story - it was well written and kept me dying to know what was going to happen next.
Love Voodoo - Alyssa Breck Vampire Luca is attracted to Collette after she does a tarot card reading for him. However she is a human - problem is she seems to be the only person who can save him from himself.
I really enjoyed this story. It had a good plot and was well written. It also had some nice details about the characters that made them very real. There was drama at the end and it made for a good finish to the story.
Voodoo & Fate - Tamsin Baker Chanti is a voodoo priestess and also a healer. After a simple request from a friend can she cope with the draw to a werewolf that she seems unable to resist?
Wow - LOVED this story. The story had plenty of twists and turns and a kick ass voodoo practitioner at the centre of it. It was well written and I was completely swept away by the story and what would happen next.
Shadows - RaeAnne Hadley Tabitha Reynolds feels a shiver up her spine when near Shadow Demons. She is also alone because her family died when she was younger and she is so terrorised by the demons (that caused their deaths) that she avoids people and relationships (especially after they killed her first boyfriend too). Justin Murphy has a similar story as he is all alone after his family were killed. He can also see them but has made it his life's work to find a way to kill them. After a chance encounter they meet and discover that they are not unique as there is someone else who can see them too.
An intriguing tale of demons and special abilities which I really liked and thought it was a clever story well written - I just need to look for the next book in the series as I HAVE to know what happens next.
Darken - Angela Fristoe Gavin walker is reeling from the death of his fiancee two years ago. His is now working with his late fiancee's best friend Coraline Evan's which is making it harder but Cora is now trying to keep him alive even if it negatively affects her.
This story had lots of dark actions with dodgy motives in the world of scientific experiments. It was well written and a nice story to read with a few twists and turns to add to the mix.
Demon of Envy - Jennifer Lynne Thor has been given a second chance as a human and hopes to find redemption so he can get back to where he should be - but can he manage it?
This was a lovely little story about envy and what it can do to you. It was well written and I really wanted them both to be able to have a HEA. Contains adult scenes.
The last of the Jinn - K.N.Lee Trust no one - not even the man you created - is the lesson the goddess Malah learns in this story.
This was a dramatic story of love and loss. It was well written and I could feel her pain and despair as she went through all those events in her life.
Slow Burn - Amy Lee Burgess Duke is a firefighter who can control fire and Erin is a banshee. Can he handle her when she has visions of violent deaths?
This is a lovely story about two people with special skills merged into a story of love. I liked the real feeling to all the characters and relationships between them
Amazing ten books that have you reading until you've finished every last one and wanting more. Anything and everything paranormal you could want. Loved reviewing this ARC
I received a free copy of this boxed set from an author and voluntarily review same.
I don’t read a lot of paranormal books but I really enjoyed this boxed set – there’s something here for everyone .I loved this book! It explores what 'envy' truly means in a sexy tale that is fast-paced. In fact, I read all the way to the end before I was ready for it to actually end!
I haven't read any paranormal books in a while but this one is really good. I received an Arc of Love Voodoo and am voluntarily leaving a review bcuz I really enjoyed reading Luca and Collette's story. I definitely want to see what happens in the other stories in the series.
ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
Awesome Box Set! It had a little bit of everything for everyone. Romance, love, danger, adventure, damsel in distress, etc. I am sure that you will find a story to your liking I recommend this book
I don’t read a lot of paranormal books but I really enjoyed this boxed set – there’s something here for everyone. A couple of my favourite stories were ‘Demon of Envy’ and ‘Voodoo and Fate’, so I’ll leave a quick review for each of those.
Demon of Envy
Phthonos, God of Envy, was my kind of hero. He's a tortured soul. An inherently good 'man' who has been consumed by envy and banished to Hell.
His mother, Aphrodite, has given him a second chance and it is Olivia, a human woman fighting her own battles with anxiety and a difficult past who can give Thon real love, and help him overcome his jealousy. But will one lapse with disastrous results mean Thon will be sent back to Hell forever? Or can Olivia find the strength to fight for him?
This is a wonderful read filled with the romance and sizzling heat expected from Jennifer Lynne, but also with a dash more angst to draw the reader in.
Voodoo and Fate
This story intrigued me because I’ve never read anything that includes voodoo practices before. I also liked the familiar element of werewolves.
There’s a lovely balance of romance and a paranormal story arc happening in this story which gives romance readers the romance hit they need, while keeping the story going at a fast pace with good and dark voodoo, witches, werewolves and plenty of drama.
I was able to enjoy not only the romance between the hero and heroine, but the secondary characters who also play a vital role in the story.
Overall a great collection of supernatural tales and a must read for paranormal fans although I was a little disappointed to discover that some of the stories weren't new.
Full moon falling: 4 stars
An enjoyable fun filled story of love, loss and self-discovery. I really liked the Norse mythology that the story centered around. The characters were definitely fun to read and the story was fast-paced. A must read for mythology fans.
Mirror, Mirror 3.5 stars
Dark, sadistic and crazy. It was a dark fast-paced read. I liked how the story flipped back and forth showing what happened and what was happening showing the influence and how the crimes mirror each other. The story reminded me of a horror movie.
Barely Magic 4 stars A sexy fun paranormal read. I enjoyed both the plot and the main characters; take charge bear shifter Angela and sexy half mage half shifter Cole. Although it was shorter than I would've liked I still loved it and would recommend it.
Love Voodoo 3 stars
I just couldn't get into this one. It was short and I just believe the characters or connect with them.
Voodoo and Fate 4 stars
Fate, love and danger encompass this story of voodoo and werewolves. I enjoyed the story. I liked the tension between the characters and the high risk throughout the story. It wasn't just one couples journey we got to see but two. Overall a great paranormal romance read.
Shadows 3.5 stars
I really loved the interesting lore and how these demons could be real it was really original and impressive. It made me think about what's in the shadows and on the screen lol The characters were okay for me I would've like them to be a bit more believable but they were just okay for me. I am definitely interested in learning more about these shadow demons.
Darken 4 stars
I love the blend of danger and romance. The story was about love, loss and learning. The little lessons and growth the characters showed along their journey only made them more real. I like the concept and am interested to see what happens with the other brothers.
Demon of Envy 3 stars
A short erotic tale. I couldn't really get into this one as it seemed very rushed. I just couldn't connect with the characters or the story. Maybe if it had a bit more depth...
The Last of the Jinn 4 stars
A short but enjoyable story full of heart-ache and loss. I could feel Malah's emotions as my own. I really liked this even if the story made me want to cry.
Slow Burn 4 stars
Sexy, supernatural and fun. That pretty much sums up the story. It was entertaining and sweet.
Overall this set gets 3.5 stars. If you love magic and fantasy, this is a set of stories you have to get! Add in some diverse writers (KN Lee and Catherine Vale to name two) and it gets even better. The variety of authors and storylines will keep you riveted for hours. I even found a couple of new authors (new to me anyways) that I want to read more from. There are a variety of stories, some are short quick reads and others are longer. Some violence and hot and steamy scenes so 18+.
