Although an heiress and travelling to London, Makaria Monkswood is almost penniless. Six months must elapse before she can inherit Monkswood Manor and until then it is occupied by her aunt whom she suspects of poisoning her. Her solicitors in London are her only friends, and on her way to them she encounters many adventures. Not the least of these is her meeting with Sir Gregory Briar, a widower, who offers her a job as a nursery maid to his son Jeremy. Although engaged to Florence Lambton, Sir Gregory, like Jeremy, comes to rely on Makaria and with their help she eventually finds love and happiness.
This was my second Sarah Farrant book, and I almost loved it as much as the first. The only thing that kept this from being 5 stars is that I thought it was a straight thriller, and it turned out that only the first couple chapters fit into that category.
Lady of Monkswood Manor reminded me in so many ways of Julie Klassen's 2012 The Maid of Fairbourne Hall. I was actually a bit taken aback by how similar some of the story was.
