Anyone that knows me well knows two things about me. First, when it comes to me reviewing or beta reading a book, I always give my 100% honest opinion. If I love it, you will know it and I will gush. If I don’t like it, I will tell you that and why but in a polite and in “constructive criticism” manner. I can’t say I loved or enjoyed a book if I didn’t. Second, I am a lover of all things hockey. I am Canadian and hockey is in my blood so everyone knows when it comes to books, my favourite and first choice will be a hockey romance. With that said though, due to this love, when it comes to hockey romances, I am the pickiest about this type of read. I love these types of books, really any sports romance not only for the passion between the characters but also the passion they have for the sport. I am no expert when it comes to hockey romances nor do I consider myself to be, but I do consider myself a well-respected, seasoned reader on top of being a reviewer as well, who knows what I like and knows what I don’t enjoy when it comes to a book.

With my review of this book, I want to be 100% honest and upfront from the start. First I am not a lover of 3rd person POV, I will always pick 1st POV book over 3rd person POV book. BUT with that said, even though I may not read a ton of 3rd person POV books, I do know how to follow the red bouncy ball and I have probably read a hundred or more3rd person POV books over the last 5+years that I have loved, even rating them 5+ stars. If a 3rd Person POV book is written well, I will always connect to the story and it’s characters immediately, so much so that within the first few pages I have already forgotten it’s in 3rd POV. A well written 3rd person POV book will automatically feel like it’s written in 1st POV. If a 3rd person POV book is decently written, it normally takes me 3-4 chapters to get used to that writing style and connect with the characters. With all that said if a book is poorly written, no matter how much I read of it, it will be a constant struggle to connect to the characters and their story.

Second thing I want to be honest with is that when I first picked this book up, this book didn’t work for me at all and I decided just after I reached the 50% mark, I was done, this one was going in the DNF pile and it did. I don’t take the decision to DNF book lightly as an author puts a lot of work into a book but I read for enjoyment so if by the half way mark I am not enjoying it and there is no sign that will change, then I normally decide to put it down. But knowing this was a debut book for this new author, I decided to pick it back up and give it a second shot . But I decided going back in, no matter what I would see this one through to the end and give a full review on the entire book. I wanted to see if this author could truly turn this book around in the last 50%
So now that I have read Just Another Season from start to finish, I can honestly say that the second half of this book did still not work at all for me. I did not enjoy this story at all and it was for so many reasons, several main reasons that I will now clearly explain.

First, I had issues with the author adding some French into the dialogue by one character. I don’t mind when authors do this, I actually kind of like it, but I enjoy it when they add it but also weave what it actually means into the dialogue. With this being a Third person POV it would have been very easy for the author to explain what that character said without the character it was said about knowing. But instead, if I wanted to know what the sentence was in English, I had to stop, flip to the front of the book on my kindle, look it up in the translation guide the author added to the ARC and then flip back. No, this wasn’t a lot of work to flip back and forth, a pain yes, but things like this pull me out of the story, a story I was already struggling to connect with.

Second, I found scene changes within a chapter as well as the few parts where the story flipped to the past and then back to the present to be extremely choppy. There was no smooth transition or any lead into the next scene, just an abrupt stop to one and an abrupt start to the next. This choppy transition is a distraction for me, once again disengaging me from a story I was already struggling to be engaged in. I also found some scene changes to be really quick, it felt like this was one of those flip books. With so much happening and happening quickly, it just made the story feeling like it was jumping all over the place

Third, I really struggled to connect to both the characters in this story, and the characters connections. There were two main characters, Emma and Ryan, but there were also two supporting characters, Luke and Trent, that were more main characters than some of the other secondary characters. I really wanted to like these characters but I found they were a bit all over the place, never really consistent throughout the story. I also struggled with the connection between these characters. The interaction was there, but it was cold and robotic. The words were written but there was no real emotion behind the words. It needed more to try build that connection between the characters so the reader can feel it and believe it.

Last, the storyline premise did have some potential but this one truly needs a lot of work. There were so many times I was left scratching my head or rolling my eyes at what was happening, it just didn’t feel realistic for me and there were times things that took place just didn’t fit with the story. In my opinion, if this book had some really good beta readers read it and make their comments/ suggestions to help fix the story. Then if it was edited by a professional editor, this book could be a decent debut novel that most readers would enjoy.

As already stated there are so many reasons why this book didn’t work for me but there were way to many to go into them all. And as I have already stated, I don’t consider myself to be an expert on books, but after spending the last 5 years being a very avid reader and the past 4 years both beta reading for numerous authors as well as reviewing books, I do consider myself an expert when it comes to knowing what I do and do not like and knowing what does and does not work for me. Reading for me is about the enjoyment of it. Its about engaging me in the story and making me feel part of this amazing fictitious world that the author has created. It’s about getting me to feel the emotions that the characters are feeling and falling in love with their story. This book did not even come close to doing that for me, there were too many distractions and the writing was not engaging at all. I wish I could have loved this book and been engaged in the story. I love hockey romances, they are my absolute favorite type of book to read. I do not get any enjoyment at all having to write unflattering reviews and I understand that it's never easy to hear anything unfavorable about a story you have put your heart and soul into but how an author handles that kind of situation determines whether I respect you enough to pick up another one of your books in the future

Didn't love this one.
But: while this won't be a memorable read for me, there were quite a few elements that I enjoyed, even though I feel like they all had a downside to them as well.

The two lead characters were likable but inconsistent in their thoughts and behavior.
The romance was cute but not fleshed out enough to satisfy my romantic heart.
The multifaceted storyline was both appealing and confusing, and it felt all over the place from time to time.
The writing was light and easy to follow but badly edited and repetitive (though I'm hoping that was just the ARC version I got).
I never felt bored but I didn't get fully engrossed either.

I wish I could've rated this book higher since it had good potential and I did quite enjoy parts of it. I just didn't click with it all the way.

I will not read this book or even DNF it because of the unprofessional and cruel post from the author about a reviewer - clearly an honest review is not wanted if she verbally and publicly attacks. To be an author one would think criticism is to be accepted and encouraged I'm deeply saddened by what I saw this author post on her Facebook page to only delete my comment and than her rant.

I could not finish this one.

I loved the premise, but the writing style did not work for me. I have read many stories told in third POV and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. In this case, it did not work for me.

For me, the writing did not flow. Some parts were confusing. I had to reread certain pages and then decided it was not for me.

I also am not a fan of frequent flashbacks. Instead of the frequent flashbacks...tell me the story from the beginning or summarize it in a prologue. This is personal preference.

This may work for you, but it did not work for me. I am not telling you not to read it. You may love it. Reading is subjective.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Honestly I didn't love it.

So in this book you're following Emma who is a reporter for a local hockey team. While she's doing her reporting she learns a quite a few things about each player. She then falls in love with one French or Canadian player and had a thing for a local player.
She learns a terrible secret about the French player and the local player while she's having a relationship with the French player. She finds out that the French player is in fact bisexual. Only to find out that the player that she has become to hate has a thing for the bisexual player even though she had a crush on him. Eventually things turn out a little bit difficult for Emma as she not only becomes a victim of a cheating party but she ends up becoming a victim of a betting party. The betting party was between the French player and his cousin in hopes to who can get into Emma's pants the fastest. Emma finds this out after she ends up engaged to the French player. Only two in the and leave the French player for his deceit and end up with the other player that she had a crush on and it just because a whole fiasco after that.
I try not to dwell on the problems of the books but here's my problem. Problem number one Emma ends up in a relationship with the French player only to find out he's bisexual. Problem number two, Emma ends up with the original player that she had a crush on even though she had told him to basically F off and she doesn't even like him. So in the end this is just basically a fiasco of a book. I will probably read book number two only to find out if she ends up going back to the French player she originally loves. But if we're going to have these issues of the French player leaving Emma or Emma sticking with the current player that she's dating with even though they're technically not dating and are moving in together it's just going to be an interesting story to say the least.

This was a good book. It took me a little while to get into it though. I just seemed to drag a little for me. The author has a nice writing style, and she does a good job of connecting characters. The chemistry between characters is great. I often found myself wanting to reach out and smack some characters a few times. This will definitely get your emotions going. The love story was interesting. Love triangles can go both ways but Avery did a good job of writing this one. I was not thrilled to find out that this is a series with a cliffhanger. If you don't mind cliffhangers I think you will enjoy it. I think if the rest of the series is written like this one it will be a good series.

Great start to a new series. I love Sports Romance novels, and as this was about Hockey it was already a winner in my eyes.
What I liked most about this book is that Avery has written some very flawed characters. It's nice to read an author that is willing to approach certain topics and not have all her characters be perfect in every way.
This was an extremely well written story, and my only slight criticism is that it ended on a cliffhanger - so I need book 2 now!!!

I liked Just Another Season. It sucked me in in the beginning but then there where part that I felt dragged. I debated putting it down at some points but I'm glad I didn't because as I read on there where parts that drew me back into the story.
I liked Emma. She was kinda of funny at some parts. Being a sports reporter was not her dream but that's what she's doing. She's a little like a fish out of water at first but she is good at her job. She meets Trent. Trent is a big guy. Emma likes hi but he's a bit confused on what he wants and they only becomes friends. Ryan and Luke are cousins and hockey players. Luke I didn't really like at first he kind of grew on me though. Ryan I liked. He's a good guy but I little misguided sometimes. He and Emma become more than friends. I liked them together. As the story went on I forget about Trent. He seemed to take the back burner for a little bit but when he came back more into the story he definitely did it big. The end left me wanting more.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was very fun at some parts. It had a little bit of everything, romance, sports, family and fights.

The plot was nice. It had some conflicts but there wasn’t too much angst. I liked the beginning the most, I find it a lot more fun than the rest of the story. There was some humorous element that start fading as the story kept progressing, but still was easy to be interested on what was going on the whole time. A thing I disliked about it was the constant cursing used mostly at the beginning of the book, I was very glad that it was less frequent as I kept reading, but I don’t think most reader would have issues with that as much as I did. Perhaps it was appropriate for the subject of the story, but is something I have little tolerance for. There are some LGBT elements that I think were properly addressed but I guess I can’t say much without spoilers.

I loved the family dynamics that were shown in the story, it might be one of the things I loved the most about it. To see a very supportive family was lovely.

The character, well I have a lot of thought on them. In general they were nice, and there were so much characters with a lot of potential to be a MC. I’ll admit that I start reading without remembering the name if the male MC and every guy I found in the story seemed to be the one. I loved how it kept me guessing. I have some more detail thoughts on each of them:

Emma was difficult to understand for me. First she was so much fun and seemed so self-confident. But suddenly there was some shyness I couldn’t understand coming from her. And there was this over dramatic side of her that ended up making me disliked her.
Ryan was nice, sort of a perfect gentleman but not quite there. I had issues trying to get into his mind, I didn’t really perceived any feelings from him or Emma, which made it hard, for me, to really care much about their relationship
Luke was a great character. A little unpleasant at first, but I got to liked him a lot.
Trent was the one who got most of my attention, perhaps because of his contradictory way to act and because I truly couldn’t believe in him. I don’t think he was as nice as he seemed to be, there’s something about him I’m still trying to figure out. I did get mad at him because his constant intruding other people’s bossiness. Still I think he was my favorite character, is either him or Luke.

The siblings, friends and rest of the family, all great and a very nice supporting group of secondary characters that I enjoyed very much.

Overall an interesting story, I didn’t expect the ending, but I’m definitely hooked for the next one in the series. I do expect it to have a little more spotlight for another characters.

The author's writing style was quite exquisite and I really love the slight use of french throughout the story, even though I don't know any french at all...
The story kind of picked up after a few chapters and I really found myself enjoying the dynamic between Ryan and Emma. The thing is, Ryan kept messing up and that kind of bugs me. I don't know if he can redeem himself but I am kind of rooting for him.
I did enjoy learning a little about hockey 'cause I'm as daft about it as Emma. I loved Ryan, but the things he did piss me off. After reading the last part, I am wondering how the next book will pan out considering Emma's situation.
Oh, and before I forget, I absolutely hate Emma's parents. They expected her to stop her education after high school! That is sick. Couldn't they be proud of her for making it to an Ivy? I am also worried about her career and I want to know what is up with her job.
I see that this series has a lot of potential and I hope to read more soon.

A wonderfully written book, with so many twists and turns, I wasn't sure where the story was heading. I absolutely loved the dynamics of all the characters, and settings. I can not wait to read the next book, as I'm sure it will be as wonderful as the first. I voluntarily read and advanced teview copy of this book.

Just Another Season, the first book published by Avery Longley, follows New Englander Emma Connelly, newly minted journalist who ends up as the sports reporter for The Kansas City Times in Missouri. Emma knows nothing about sports, doesn't care much about sports, but is determined to do the best she can at the job. New best friends Devin and Gabi Malone pitch in to teach her what they can and get her ready to report on the newest minor league ice hockey team, the Blizzard. Turns out they have a little insider help- Gabi's brother and cousin, Ryan and Luke Perrault, have just been signed to the team! What starts out as a rocky relationship slowly evolves into friendship with the Perrault boys and when goalie Ryan is injured, Emma agrees to let him stay with her in her ground level apartment. Romantic feelings develop. This causes some problems with teammate Trent, who might have feelings for Emma and had no idea how to act on them when he had the chance, but now is jealous. Further complicating matters is that Ryan is also attracted to Trent, who is also attracted to him. Sparks fly but will they light fireworks or burn things down?

I'm starting this review off with a warning: when you get towards the end of the book and start worrying about how will everything get resolved by the last page: it won't. While the ending isn't a cliffhanger, it is definitely a "to be continued". Though Longely's next book Too Many Men will be released April 2017, so we won't have long between installments.

Just Another Season is a hockey player romance that tackles some tough issues. Ryan and Trent both struggle with their sexuality, and with how society will view them if they come out. Athletes are the macho men of society and hockey players are the toughest of athletes- will their friends, families, teammates, and Emma still see them as "real" men if they admit to being bisexual? What does it mean to be a "real" man? There's a great scene late in the book where a player gets nasty with Ryan about his sexuality and the team and coach stand with Ryan to send a message: a person's sexuality is their own business, doesn't affect how they play hockey, and hate and intolerance have no place with the Blizzards. When the threat comes that Ryan's sexuality might go public, you get the interesting "how do we get ahead of this and focus on the message of tolerance and support" spin. As Emma points out, currently no hockey players have come out as part of the LGBTQ community. By the end of Season nothing has reached the public at large, but you get the feeling it's only a matter of time. It will be interesting to see how Longley envisions the outcome.

Season is a romance where none of the main characters seem to have enough experience with relationships to avoid making plenty of classic relationship mistakes- lying, avoiding tough issues, and running away from problems being top of the list. Ryan, Emma, and Trent all have their moments of cowardice and the reader has to hope that they will learn from their mistakes as they get to Too Many Men.

A sports reporter who doesn't know a baseball from a hockey puck and ends up romantically entangled with hockey players is a great premise. The story drags occasionally, for the most part we don't get much depth on any of the characters, and there are some things that flip from one extreme to another for no discernible reason (Luke is a complete jerk when we first meet him, pegging Emma as a "puck bunny" before they are even introduced, complains without evidence that she's just out to bag as many hockey players as she can, then turns into a reasonably decent guy who's bedroom is a revolving door for women). But overall a good story with some memorable scenes, like the rather emotionally touching and well written ending to the book. It will be interesting to watch Longley develop as a writer and grow into her full potential.

Just Another Season and Avery Longley show promise to develop into a series (and writer) that is far from "just another" hockey romance, unafraid to tackle the everyday and the tough issues side by side.

Avery J. Long is a new author to me and I enjoyed Just Another Season. I love sports romances in general, regardless of the sport. Two thing I didn't like was the French phrases and the ending. I don't speak or read French, so it was a pain going to the translation page each time. I finally just quit doing it. If I had of known this book ending in a cliffhanger, I wouldn't have read it yet. I would have waited until the next book came out or until the last book in the series. I have preordered the next book because I have to know what happens". I just wish I didn't have to wait over a month. That's just me though. I do recommend this book if you enjoy reading sports romances.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

It took me a while to get into this book as it seemed to be slow moving to me, but I enjoyed it in the end. It really has serious relationship-building on more than one front that makes it worth the read to me. There are dumb decisions and strong reactions to them. It does not end in a HEA (or a HFN really). Now we must wait for the next volume to see how it turns out.

It was all on the heroine. She was too wishy washy hopping from infatuation with one guy to love with another, then jumping back on to the first one like butter on toast. The story did keep me engaged though so it would have been atleast 3 stars if not for the cliffhanger ending. The end just left me unsatisfied and not looking forward to what promised to be an unsatisfying end to the love triangle

Honestly, I started off this book and felt instantly confused. The writing was waay different than what I was used to and in the first couple chapters I found myself rereading sections because I wasn't quite understanding. The reading did become easier though but I never found myself loving this book. It took me way longer then I expected to finish this book because it felt like I was forcing myself to finish.

I picked up this book because A) I am an avid hockey fan and B) I am french Canadian and C) I love reading ARCs. I did quite enjoy the little french curse words thrown into the story but I do see how the french could be confusing for people even with the guide in the beginning.

The romance in this novel was quite cute but I was fully surprised at the first sexual scene. My jaw nearly dropped. I was super excited for more but I was soon disappointed when there was only a couple more sexual scenes. I did have an issue with how Emma got upset so easily and wanted to leave right away. Especially the fact that she ran to Trent and they ended up together! Maybe I can't relate because i'm personally not that kind of girl but I just found that the characters had a lot of flaws.

In the long run, the book was okay. I'll probably attempt to read the sequel because I am curious to see who she chooses. I did not LOVE this book but I do definitely rate it 3 stars.

This book is a great start to what is sure to be a fabulous series. This is not a formulaic book, the characters make choices that are a turns unexpected or go against their own best interests. It's very real. The characters are fantastically complicated, so no wonder we'll be getting to see them again in the next book. They're going to need it. While this is a book that continues on, I will note that the drop off ends at a very complete point in this story, and the next book is coming out very quickly. So don't let a very small cliffhanger scare you-- it's still worth investing the time and effort into. Even if you're a total hockey novice, this is a great read, because the heroine (Emma) is too-- so we get to learn a bit more about it alongside her. And the guys are just fun, and oh so very different from one another. This book is unique, and a power unto itself within the not only romance as a genre, but the subcategory of hockey player romances. This book is an intense journey with a slow-burning sexual intensity sure to please.

I just loved this book. The plot had me all over the place. I can't wait to read the second book. This is the first book I have read of this author. It's fantastic! I love Ryan. After escaping her family to follow her dreams, Emma becomes a sports report whom doesn't know sports. Ryan moves to the mid-west to play hockey and follow in his grandfather's footsteps. Ryan is instantly attracted to Emma, but gets off on the wrong foot with her until he is injured. The two cannot deny they love each other, but go about things in the wrong way. There is a fine line between love and hate, can these two navigate it? When there are landmines put into place will they survive?

This book sucked me and and I read it straight through. Loved the roller coaster of emotions and have to admit that I thought both of the characters were likable idiots whom had no clue how to navigate a relationship! Everything was tied in together and I seriously cannot wait for the sequel so I can see where this one is going because I'm honestly rooting for all three! Great book and definitely recommend!

Just another Season is the first book that I have read by Avery J Longley and I found the book interesting but a bit all over the place. Don't get me wrong the story kept my attention and was interesting. I do enjoy a good sports romance and that part of it was cool. The love triangle thing was a little confusing for me. It is then it isn't kind of thing, not sure where that is going to lead in the second book.

Points were lost on the ending, a bit of a cliffhanger and also because at times I was a little confused on where the story was going, but overall I was struggling on 3 or 4 stars so to be fair I would say probably a 3.5 for me.

I loved this book and can't wait for the story to continue in book two. It was an quick and easy read. The story moved along nicely and made putting it down hard for me. The only fault I have is that the French phrases do not have interpretations and I had to go to an outside source to understand those parts of the book.

Just Another Season was a 3.5 star read.
I enjoyed the read but it felt really slow in the beginning, it took me a little bit to really get into it.

Emma is a sports writer but doesn’t like sports and lacks knowledge of them to a point. She ends up staying at the team complex with the players. This is where she meets Trent, Ryan and Luke.
Let's say that these three are very interesting and hot characters.

Somehow, I see you and I getting along well. I think we’re too much alike not to.

When she met Trent she was instantly attracted to him and pursued him, this scared him off and he asked for space. Than Ryan comes into the picture, after his injury he moves in with Emma since she is on the first floor. This is when they start to grow closer.

I just know that when you’re by my side, things feel right.

There is a little bit of a triangle with Trent, Ryan and Emma. There are secrets revealed that cause some twists in the story. Who will win Emma’s heart, Trent or Ryan?

There is a good story line but I feel like I was missing some things and I hope they come together in book 2. Emma really confused me and annoyed me at times. The secondary characters were good, I loved Ryan’s sister. I feel like I would have liked more on the Trent/Ryan front, Emma just gave up too quickly for me when it came to certain things in her life. I would have liked her to be more of an adult character instead of a needy one. The end is a slight cliff-hanger and I will be reading book two because I need to see what happens
