Hessen novellistiikka esittelee mukavasti 1900-luvun alun mielenmaiseman, tarkan ihmis- ja tunnelmakuvauksen kaartumista sotien jälkeisiin ylimalkaisemman allegorisempiin novelleihin. Osa novellien pohdiskelevuudesta on kestänyt ihan mukavasti ajan hammasta, tosin välillä on selvästi lähes setämäisen konservatiivinen osoittelu vallalla.
