This reading was okay, but I likely wouldn’t choose to read it again with subsequent children, if I could find a suitable alternative. It’s dated and rather dry. I found myself offering updates (to my young listeners) about products that are no longer considered safe, such as DDT.

A pre-read for my Gr. 4 girl. It's well written and engaging, and I found myself learning lots along the way. The world around me opened up in new ways, and it made me curious about more things. I did have to do additional research into some chemical substances that are no longer hailed as the magic they once were when this book was published (like ddt).

A very readable introduction to chemistry, which this book shows is essential to our everyday lives. While many new findings have emerged in the time since this book was written, it is interesting to gain the perspective from the past.
