Before reading this book, I knew Hudson Taylor was a missionary to China—but I didn’t understand the depth of his impact or the spiritual convictions that shaped his life. Hudson Taylor – Lessons in Faith and Discipleship by Roger Steer changed that.
Roger Steer presents Taylor’s story in a clear, approachable way, focusing less on timelines and more on lessons—faith, trust, prayer, and obedience. Taylor’s radical approach to funding ministry, his refusal to rely on human security, and his deep confidence in God were both inspiring and unsettling.
One of my favorite moments in the book is Taylor’s emphasis on John 4:14—faith as an ongoing act of drinking deeply from Christ, not something done once and forgotten. And when life became overwhelming, Taylor rested in Jesus, often singing hymns as a way of re-centering his heart.
This book is a gentle but profound reminder that God does not change—and that lives of quiet faithfulness can have global impact. A meaningful and encouraging read.

The book Hudson Taylor: Lessons in Discipleship was a well-written book. The structure of the book made it very easy for me to learn more about Hudson Taylor’s life. Roger Steer presented Taylor’s life through short lessons at the beginning of each chapter (100 in all), then elaborating on them in short stories for the remainder of the chapter. As a Christian, this book was easy to learn from, as the lessons were clearly presented then explained for every chapter. At the end of the book, Steer also included a timeline covering most of the events mentioned in the short stories throughout the book.

Easy to read. It's presented as 100 lessons to learn from Hudson Taylor and then a short paragraphs where the lessons can be found.
This books provides a glimpse into the thinking and the driving force and power behind Hudson Taylor. He was utterly bible centred, God centred, Christ centred, had faith in the faithfulness of God such that relied on prayer knowing that it would be answered.
