Written with the aid of access to the private archives of producer David O. Selznick, as well as other collections, this is the story of the making of Gone With the Wind.
It sets out to reveal how a bestselling novel was transformed into one of the most celebrated of all films, and describes how decisions were taken on topics such as how Tara should look, how Scarlett should wear her hair, how the burning of Atlanta should be captured on film, and how Rhett Butler was allowed to say, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn", in contravention of the 1930s production code.

October 4, 2025Found this while looking for another book. I didn't read most of it, but I did look at the numerous pictures. There is a ton of concept art, which could be pretty interesting, as well as some wardrobe and set stills I hadn't seen before. It also contains one of the "deleted scene" pictures of Belle Watling giving aid to wounded soldiers.
While I won't actually rate this, I want to say books like these are underrated in terms of rare pictures. Not everything is on the internet, folks!

This book is very enlightening. It's a must-purchase for every fan of the movie. My favorite part is an illustration of Rhett at the bottom of the gorgeous staircase having a drink. I think that it was whisky. It looked like it.

Excellent in its writing; entertaining in its stories; inspiring in its scope. Gives me so much more appreciation for this marvelous movie!

If your a fan of this Hollywood classic this is definitely the book you need it's very insightful on the making of the film

This was an interesting book about how they made Gone With the Wind lots of details on the technical aspects of making a great film.
