Beginning readers will love this hilarious romp through alphabet rhymes with words to guess and flaps to lift!
K is for kangaroo with a baby in her pouch Jumping up and down on Grandma's leather _ _ _ _ _.
Lighthearted, funny illustrations match the rhyming couplets, each of which ends with a fill-in-the-blank. Kids will love to guess the word, which at the same time reinforce reading concepts of like-sounding words. The hilarious situations will keep readers giggling.
This probably would have been cuter if our copy hadn't been all ripped up and if the kids would have been in the room with me to try to guess what the rhyming word was before I lifted the flap. I might try this one again in the future and see if it goes any better.
Fun and quick paced, the rhymes encourage participation and inquiry. With 26 sets of couplets (one per letter of the alphabet), some will fare better than others.
I like that kids lift the flap to discover the rhyming word in this alphabet book:
F is for fox, who raids the chicken coop And frowns as he steps in lots of chicken _ _ _ _. (poop)
The dashes on the flap are nice for kids who are at that stage of knowing that words are made up of letters, but I think most kids will ignore the dashes and just listen for the rhyme. The little flaps aren't holding up well to multiple uses at our public library, but it'd be fine for family or small classroom use.
You realize ABC books 2-5 times a day all week long. This is a very fun one, where the child can try to guess the last rhyme and lift the flap to reveal it. The book encourages the children to repeat the book several times, until they can get all the rhymes (and rhyming, I'm sure you know, is a vital pre-literacy skill!)
This is a wonderful children's book! I love the illustrations as well as the rhyming. Each page is a letter of the alphabet and the rhyme has the last word covered with a little flap so the kids have to guess what the rhyming word is. Cute and hilarious!
Come Rhyme with Me! by Hans Wilhelm is a poetry book created for 4-8-year olds. Although this book has not won any awards up to date, he has won numerous awards for other books he has written. To summarize the text, it rhymes words that follow the pattern of the alphabet. For each letter of the alphabet there is a corresponding animal starting with the same letter. I rated this book 4 stars based upon its ability to effectively complete the literary elements of characters, theme, illustration, language, texture and color. The author used unique animals for each letter; he used quail for q, l for llama, and p for platypus. The theme exemplified within this story is to rhyme the last word of the first sentence with the last word of the second sentence while having the information pertain to the specified animal. The rhyming of the language makes the plot more memorable and exciting; it is easier to associate the correct letter with the corresponding animal. For example, when the letter m goes with moose and it rhymes “they(antleers) are on his head” and “it’s such a nuisance when he’s lying in bed”. The illustrations in the story are unique and vibrantly colored. The water color technique employed creates depth in the image while giving it an effect of a more cartoonish illustration. Although there is no actual texture in this book, a visual texture can be seen. For instance, there are light green (short strokes) juxtaposed against the forest green background to create the texture of grass. I believe this book would be appealing to young readers because of its creative word play and illustrations. Children will be able to quickly learn the alphabet which will bring a feeling of accomplishment. When working with children I would use this book to teach them about the letters in the alphabet.
