This is a very good story about the good guys against the bad guys. See, the galaxy is being destroyed by the Vorn, a.k.a. Destroyer of Worlds, or just Black Ships. This an insect-like race of beings that come to harvest our galaxy every million years or so and then they kind of go away. Now, when I say harvest, I mean that. They turn every living thing on a planet, moon, or space station into a consumable pellet that they can then eat. Nothing living is left on a planet, moon or space station once the Vorn arrive and do their thing. They also have advanced technology that just about makes their starships invincible. So, there’s really no stopping these voracious insects.

The galaxy humans exist in has a lot of intelligent races. They have been flourishing for millions of years since the last Vorn culling. Some have grown to become very advanced races now called Enlightened in that their people have left all aggressive tendencies behind and now pursue knowledge. They exist peacefully knowing that they are protected by some other races that are classified as Protectors. These are races of beings that haven’t yet reached Enlightenment so they still have some militaristic tendencies that allow them to defend the Enlightened. Still, even the Protectors don’t have the technology to stand up against the Vorn.

Well, except for one race called the Lakiams. They have built special missiles that have warheads in the two-hundred megaton range which when fired in volleys of forty or more against a single spot on a Vorn ship, can overload the Vorn ships shields causing a catastrophic explosion destroying the ship. That’s been done successfully in just one encounter with the Vorn. The Lakiams do not know if they can continue to stop the Vorn in this manner since these large missiles are expensive to make and the technology is very difficult to master. They are willing to share this technology with other Protectors to some extent. But, they need an alliance of all or most all of the Protector worlds so they can fight as one which might give them all a chance. Unfortunately, the Protector worlds are accustomed to fighting and doing their own thing and not cooperating with others. But Commodore Dreen, Commander of the Liakiam fleet feels he must get this alliance formed or they are all doomed.

Meanwhile, Admiral Kurt Vickers, a human from the planet Newton is in charge of protecting both Earth and Newton. The Solar System and the Newton System are in a very uninhabited sector of the galaxy far from the Protectorate and Enlightened civilizations. It’s thought that the Vorn would never find them and even if they did, the probably wouldn’t bother culling either planet since it wouldn’t be worth their time and effort. Still, Admiral Vickers knows that he must do something to help the galactic community or humanity won’t have anything to advance towards. They would be on their own when the Vorn wipes out all other intelligent races taking with them their advanced knowledge. He has a plan that might provide some additional allies for this galactic battle. Unfortunately, it’s based on a myth which he has to prove as true. Doing so, thought, might mean he will never return to Newton or Earth, ever!

There should be more Star Cross books so I’m looking forward to the series continuing. I’m not sure why, but the author isn’t showing this as a series on his cover titles. I had to find out which book in the series this was by looking at the end of the book. So, you need to be careful to get them read in the correct order.

The power of youth and innocence.

A fabulous continuation of the Star Cross series.

The humans from Newton are presented with upgraded ships including the new flagship Star Cross. As they take their new fleet of ships on their shakedown cruise Fleet Admiral Vickers continues to worry about the black ships and the possible arrival of the Destroyer of World's at either Earth or Newton. To add to the new Protector World's technology they must find the lost elder civilization who may offer the answer to the offensive and defensive weapons that they will need to defend themselves.as

Meanwhile, the Lakiams try to form an alliance of Protector Worlds to offset the power of the Vorn, the Destroyer of Worlds. Their defeat of the Vorn has led them to become a target for revenge. If they can cobble together an alliance they may be able to stave off their own destruction.

To find out the answers it will be necessary for you to read this excellent book.

The multitude of characters are well developed and have well established personalities. Again the author has wound plotlines around to keep you enthralled and waiting to turn the next page.

Not sharing advanced battle technology with the humans - are the Glaymons not worried that once the technology is deployed in the battlefield that the enemy will not acquire this tech? I cannot think of a single instance in earth history where once a weapon was used the enemy did not soon start using something similar - either by capturing an example of the tech or develop something themselves. Well, I suppose the indians never learned how to make guns but i don’t see a parallel to that example in this story.

Also, sharing some weapons technology with the Lakiams but not the best technology because it would upset the galactic economy. Doesn’t this assume the Vorn will be defeated and driven from this galaxy? I thought this was a battle for survival? What good a galactic economy if your all food for the Vorn?

A ripping good yarn.

Yeah it's an old expression but this story feels like it could have been written 60 years ago. Lots of action, lots of humanoid aliens, and a race of BEMs (bug-eyed monsters) to fight off. The Vorn are tearing through the galaxy eating all the advanced races they encounter. Nothing seems to be able to slow them down or even give them indigestion. Something has to be done. One race, the Lakians seem to have fared better against the Vorn. But is it enough? How will the Humans be able to help turn the tables against this horrible enemy? Read the book. The answer is there.

Can they find a way to defeat the Vorn

As with all of Raymond Weil's books he keeps you guessing. Characters are well written and the action is good. He also throws in what happens at home not just in battle. In this book he continues thr galaxies battle against the vorn harvest. Fleet admiral Vickers sets out to find an ancient race that may be able to help defeat them. Read to find out if he did and what happens. Waiting on the next book to see where the galaxy goes

Great series

Normally by book three most writers have a drop off in the quality of the writing, but not in this case. Story line and character development continues at a fast pace. Thanks to the author and I'm looking forward to part four.

Very good read

Really enjoyed that read. Every page. Good intrigue, loved how the plot kept moving, and the characters kept growing. Few surprises and twists, but I enjoyed how dreams of revenge and seeds of betrayal were planted in the last few chapters. Well written.

Admiral Vickers faces the deadliest threat to the galaxy.

The 3rd book in the Star Cross series introduces new races to the galaxy. Some are friendly but others aren't. The saga just keeps delivering page turning action. Another strong book from Weil.

This book was my kind of story. It is well written with lots of likable characters. It has plenty of action and the bad guys gets quite a few surprises, in particular from the “primitive” humans.

The book switches regularly between the humans, the Enlightened races, especially the Lakiams and Fleet Commodore Dreen, and the Vorns. I quite liked this since it meant that we got a first hand view of the bad guy’s surprise when both the Lakiams and, in particular, the humans demonstrate that their bite is actually worse than their bark.

Reading about the adventure of Admiral Vickers is as enjoyable as it was in the previous book. Actually even more since the privateers do not play the main bad guy role in this book. However, the other characters are also quite enjoyable. Fleet Commodore Dreen is the Enlightened worlds’ version of Admiral Vickers. Mara is also a nice addition to the cast.

As I wrote there is plenty of action and it is well done. The losses for “our” side is staggering and time runs short for Admiral Vickers. I do not think it is too much of a spoiler to say that the Admiral and his new found friend(s) does indeed save the day, at least for the time being, at the end. After all, the books from this author usually ends on a somewhat positive note.

The Vorn might take a surprise beating in the end but they are far from defeated and Prince Brollen is now not just fighting for the Vorn’s “food source” but he vants revenge, big time.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series. This one kind of finished the current story arc but the author certainly left the path open for a new one to start.

An excellent read???

I like following this story. Just getting to know the characters. Would like to know more on the back story of Kurt Vickers. Not one of Wiel's best and the story line seemed to be hurried in the climax. He has done a great job of explaining the plots in the prologue. I hope the next installment will take some time to work out the details and add depth to the main characters.

A Great Saga Continues

I have really enjoyed all three of this series. I like like the character of Fleet Admiral Kurt Vickers. He is highly competent and loyal. Mara is a beautiful distraction that tests his fidelity to his love Keera. The chemistry among characters is great. Even with the AI Aleea. The Vorn are defeated for now but Prince Brollen survives and plans new attacks. I hope there will be another book.

What a great series

This series of books just gets better with each book. We see a new Star Cross built and sent out to find a older race of aliens, but it didn't go as planned. The Vorn are still wiping out world's for food, and help is needed urgently. With the help from this new friends the battle may have been won, but the war is still ongoing.
