It's not gonna change your life, but it's pretty good at what it does. Quick and personable stories about Chinese culture told by a native who married an American. Introduces things that may be odd to a westerner, says why and then onto the next. Simple, effective and relatable.

Author Yi S. Ellis has compiled an interesting set of stories that illustrate the difference between Western and Asian thinking and lifestyles. Ellis was born in China, but she came to the US at the age of 13 and went to school in the States. Her husband is American. Ellis shares stories about how Americans, her husband in particular, think about the Chinese. Americans and Chinese have much in common, but the cultural differences are real and take some getting used to.

The book is peppered with colorful and interesting anecdotes about normal, everyday events, like attending a party hosted by a Chinese person or going out to eat with them. The writing is lively and is fun and easy to read. Chinese words and phrases are sprinkled throughout the text, as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as our son recently married a Chinese national. We love our new daughter-in-law, and any new insights we get into her cultural background are most welcome.

I would point out that there are several typos in the text. They are rather minor, but as an avid reader, and a book reviewer, I tend to notice these things. Perhaps they will escape your notice.

Some of this book was interesting and helpful! It seems like the author and her husband only lived in New York and Shanghai, which have very particular cultures inside their own national culture. She often says things in the context of chinese culture vs western culture, but it felt more like Shanghai vs New York culture. The only anecdotes for non-American westerners was a couple UK and one Germany. Also, this book was published in 2012, and China has recently developed so quickly that today in 2020, many things (dining, payment, business cards, etc.) are no longer as applicable. This book focuses heavily on business, so if you are in China for travel or a non-business related job (I'm here for teaching), it might not be the most helpful read.

Recognized around fifty percent of the stories from my travels. A nice trip down memory lane.

It is a good guide for people who travel to China often or deal with the Chinese. Even though Chinese culture is much more complex, this book will introduce you to the more obvious and basic customs when first dealing with the Chinese society. It is a good book.

What a silly book... I understand it might be useful for some people, but it reveals (I believe, unnecessarily) way too much personal information about the author and it's just so cringey.

I’ve had this book for over a year, embarrassingly in the bathroom beside well, I think you can guess where. It’s a good book to pass the time with. And as a foreigner who’s been living in China since the 1990s I can confirm that most of the stories ring true.

This book provided some interesting insights into Chinese culture and customs. It was a quick and easy read, but poorly written and repetitive at times.

Iesākumam noderīga priekšstatam par Ķīnu. Ja Ķīnā kādu laiku jau būts, apstiprina zināmo. Ātri un viegli izlasāma.

This was worth reading, if only because it took no more than two days to finish. It was only 25% useful, though perhaps 50% interesting. The rest was filled with vapid anecdotal wisdom about extremely minor cultural issues the knowledge of which offers little value to most foreigners. I think the main problem is that it's been so long since I read a book written at 3rd grade level that I found the process of muddling through the author's sentences to be unpleasant at best.

I liked this book a lot. Well written. I am in Shanghai for a about 5 months...it is interesting to learn about people, but I understand this in no way describes all Chinese. :) Just as one description of American women in one of the stories certainly would not pertain to me...the stories have still helped. I now know to watch out for stinking tofu and why I am never offered water when I sit down at a restaurant.

I read this book while I was visiting China. I wish I had read it beforehand. It was interesting, eye opening, and helped explain some things. I totally recommend this book to anyone interested in Chinese culture.
