This was book 46 in the "Suncoast Society" series. Lee Evans has just suffered a traumatic injury that has forced him to retire from his kicking career in the NFL and to top it all off his wife of 2 years just filed for divorce because she is having an affair with his teammate. Lee has a secret he is gay and had a crush on his high school friend. Arlin Odom's life is at a stand still he is a gay Dom who has never got over the crush he had on Lee, but after high school they lost touch. When Lee contacts Arlin on facebook he goes to get him to help take care of him. I really felt bad for Arlin and his wife Tila was a real B*tch who leaves their injured husband he was so grateful for Arlin's help. This book introduces the first F/F couple Arlin's assistant Leanna and her wife Sharon with Leanna being a Domme they are member of Venture and know Tilly Leanna also asked her to play matchmaker and fix Arlin up. This book also took place at the same time as book 45 "Splendid Isolation" as both Arlin and Everett attended an orientation at Venture. When Arlin helps him take a shower Lee confuses his secret that he's gay and so does Arlin only he tells him that he is also kinky. This was a really good short quick read and because of Lee's injuries they have to take it slow. When Lee is injury free he gets a job with ESPN but it's not in Florida and although Arlin wants to tell him to stay he knows that Lee has to be willing to come to that decision on his own and he did. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling like the rest of the books in this series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I hope Tymber will write about Leanna and Sharon.
SIMILAR TO RAIN brings in another all star, this time an athlete. I like how this series shows different types of people in the lifestyle. Most of the people are your regular folks. Once in a while, Ms. Dalton throws in a rich and famous type of character. She makes them relatable too. They are not too different than everyone else and they have a mutual love of kink. Our latest star is Lee. Lee's sports injury that cuts his football career short. This starts a downward spiral as friends and his wife leave him like rats off a sinking ship. I felt badly for Lee.
I liked Lee because he is a straightforward guy who is down to earth. He avoids drama and he tries to keep a low profile. What made me sad was how alone he was when he was injured. No one helped him and he was by himself in a hotel. It is clear he hits a new low in his life. Even though he is surrounded by fans and his social media contains many followers, he is all by himself. This kind of isolation is frightening to see because it is all too easy for me to imagine it happening to me. Fortunately for him, he makes a tentative reach out to his old high school friend, Arlin. Arlin immediately grabs a hold of Lee and becomes his safe haven.
Arlin is the kind of best friend people dream of. He is helpful, giving, generous and so loving. As an added bonus, he is sexy hawt and a dominant. When these two reconnect over Facebook, their friendship re-ignites their unrequited secret crush for each other. The chemistry between these two friends is strong. Their old friendship quickly goes into full blown kinky love affair. One would think this would be a nice and sweet happily ever after. No, Ms. Dalton is a sadist who decides to torture these two lovebirds with all too realistic life decisions. Lee needs to make a choice between his budding second career post football injury or staying with Arlin. Arlin is braced for the worst because Lee did not choose him the last time.
The torturous long distance relationship is exposed so thoroughly in this story. For those who have to travel constantly for work, this part of the story hits home. When the relationship is new and on shaky grounds, it makes it even harder to be physically apart. It takes a very strong bond for two people to be far apart and in a D/s relationship. This conflict for Lee and Arlin is painful to watch. Fortunately for the readers, this story ends in a happily ever after. This kinky romance is recommended for m/m readers who love second chance themes.
I have just fallen in love with this series. All the characters are believable because they aren't rich billionaires or something along those lines. They are just ordinary people who have the same troubles and face the same challenges that everyone does! Best friends from high school who had no clue how each felt about each other. Now years later, after a career ending injury Lee tries to reconnect with Arlin, who he crushed on in High School. He has no clue that Arlin had a crush on him. When they get back together and found out the secrets, there is no stopping them. I loved how the reader is just caught up in the story of these guys and how their love progresses. Tymber writes stories from her heart and that is why she is an auto buy for me every single time!
2.5 stars 4/7/2017. Well I did read this book. It was a hurt/comfort (my favorite) and second chance romance. I found it jarring that Arlin and Lee, after coming out of the closet and admitting that they both had crushes on each other 20 years ago, immediately fell into a D/s relationship. Lee was a gay plus kink virgin to boot. The guys did reconnect emotionally, but I needed a little more page time for them to take it to a physical level and see the D/s come out naturally. The writing style felt passive with a lot of telling and the physical sex scenes especially suffered.
Tymber Dalton is my favorite author and an automatic buy every time she releases a new book. Similar to Rain is the 46th book in the Suncoast Society BDSM series. But just in case you're panicking because you haven't read all of the previous 45 books in the series, never fear! Each of the books in the series is a standalone novel, although you will understand the backstories of all the characters involved in each book better if you do read them in order. To that end, there's a complete listing of the entire series, in order, at the beginning of each of the Suncoast Society books.
Similar to Rain is the story of Lee and Arlin. Lee Evans has a fabulous career as a kicker in the NFL. Fabulous, that is, until a traumatic, multiple bone-breaking injury to his kicking leg, as well as a shoulder injury, forces him into retirement. Adding insult to literal injury, his wife of only two years, Tila, announces she's filing for divorce and leaving him for one of his former teammates. At least he had the sense to make her sign a prenuptial agreement before the marriage! He's 39-years-old, out-of-work, soon-to-be-divorced, and alone. Oh yeah, one more little thing...he's gay. Life pretty much sucks!
Arlin Odom grew up and attended school with Lee. They were the stereotypical geek/jock pair in high school, with Arlin tutoring Lee so that Lee could keep his grades up. But as close as they once were, they drifted apart after high school, particularly when Lee's football career took off. Arlin, now a financial planner/adviser, has been openly gay since his divorce nearly 10 years ago, and has had a huge crush on Lee since his high school days. But he downplays the kinky side of his life. He hasn't even attended Venture, the local BDSM club, even though he's had plenty of invitations to go from his admin, Leanna.
Following his injury, Lee moves to Tampa, staying in an extended-stay complex alone while he recovers. Depressed, in major pain, and feeling sorry for himself, he opens his private Facebook profile. While browsing his contacts, he notices a high school alumni group and, on a whim, joins it. Reviewing the member list, Lee startles as he sees Arlin's name. Even though he's never come out to anyone, Lee's had a crush on Arlin since high school. Hoping against hope, Lee sends Arlin a friend request and sits back, waiting for a response.
Meanwhile, Arlin's tired of being alone and hiding his true nature. He finally decides to take a chance and go to Venture. He contacts Leanna and they agree to meet there. The people at Venture are nice but there's no attraction, not even a little bit, from anyone there. After getting a dinner invitation from Tilly, a well-known matchmaker and switch at the club, for later in the week, Arlin decides to call it a night. Sunday morning, while waiting for his breakfast order at a local restaurant, Arlin checks his Facebook app on his phone and is surprised to see a friend request...from Lee! Was it really his Lee, the Lee he knew in high school? After all, Lee Evans wasn't exactly an uncommon name. Taking a deep breath, Arlin accepts the friend request. Within minutes, Lee and Arlin have exchanged messages and phone calls, and their friendship resumes.
Ms. Dalton takes the reader on journey of discovery as Lee and Arlin reconnect. Regaining their friendship, the joy of reunion, the sometimes thrilling, sometimes painful, often emotionally-draining process of each man finding his own identity and place, is never dull. The ups and downs are constant. Is it possible for either man to trust again after all they've been through? Can the two find ultimate happiness or will outside forces, family, friends, work, and any number of other obstacles, make their efforts to find happiness fall like rain through their fingertips?
Ms. Dalton has been an active participant in the BDSM lifestyle for many years, and the details and knowledge of that lifestyle as portrayed in her novels are incredibly accurate. (Unfortunately, I've read more than my fair share of novels purporting to represent the lifestyle which have turned out to contain little to no accurate representation of true BDSM at all.) But, as I've said many times before, for me, personally, it's not just the BDSM itself that makes me love her stories. Yes, I freely admit that I'm fascinated by the BDSM lifestyle. But Ms. Dalton is one of the very few authors I have found who has the ability to create authentic and credible characters that the reader can relate to in a very personal way. And it's not just the main characters either. The supporting characters are completely formed, and they develop and grow along with the main characters as the story progresses. I always feel as if I'm actually living in the story with the characters. I always know from the minute I pick up a new Tymber Dalton novel that I won't want to put it down until I've finished. Arlin's and Lee's story was so engrossing that nothing else seemed to matter while I was reading. While I have a tendency to do that with any good book I read, Ms. Dalton's books ALWAYS have the ability to pull me in from the very beginning. Most other books take a chapter or two to really grab my interest but this isn't so with Ms. Dalton's books. Ms. Dalton's skill as an author is exceptional. It's no surprise to anyone who's either read my reviews of Ms. Dalton's books or who knows me personally, that I am extremely impressed with the entire Suncoast Society series. Similar to Rain is another exceptional and very worthy addition to that series.
One final comment. This is an ADULT book. It contains adult BDSM themes, explicit language, and sexual scenes. If you do not enjoy erotic romance with explicit sexual and BDSM scenes then PLEASE carefully consider your purchase before buying any book in a genre you know you will not enjoy. There is always a synopsis of the book at the seller's website or on the dust jacket of the book. There are also reviews of the book available not only on Goodreads but at the booksellers' websites. PLEASE avail yourself of these resources so you are certain the book you are purchasing is what you want to read. ALSO, PLEASE DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW OF A BOOK YOU PURCHASED WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY IT AS IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE AUTHOR! She works extremely hard to provide a quality work product and if you know before you purchase a book that you will object to the subject matter contained therein, you are doing not only yourself, but the author, an extreme disservice. But if you do enjoy hot, erotic BDSM romances, I highly recommend Similar to Rain. As with every Tymber Dalton book, I give it my highest rating without reservation!
I loved this book! What could be better than two hot men falling in love? It was refreshing that there was no traumatic drama happening to these 2 men after Arlin moves Lee in with him. It is a sweet second chance at love, although the first chance between the two was purely happening in their fantasies. The BDSM between the two was a plus! I can't wait for the next Suncoast Society book! Good writing, Tymber!
Another great couple become a part of the Suncoast Society. Arlin and Lee were friends years ago in high school where they were both keepers of secrets. As Lee life starts to unravel something makes him reach out to his old friend. Arlin is also in a place in his life where he's ready to start looking for more in his life.
As these men reconnect they realize they still have much of the old friendship still there. What is even better these two don't waste time dancing around each other but don't wait to long to come clean on their secrets.
There is some angst as they figure out the logical things of life and it takes awhile for things to really settle but it's great to see these old friends find new way to relate.
This is a short and sweet second chance romance between two men who were best friends in high school but had no idea that they were both gay and loved one another. Lee moves away for a successful football career while Arlis joins then later becomes head of his own investment firm. How these two reconnect is a sexy romance in the Suncoast Society.
Sweet, quick, and fun read. Not a lot going on in this one with regards to the gang, but a great second chance story. Great the way that they were able to come together, would have been nice to see his ex wife get what's coming to her especially since the whole team knew and noone said anything, not good team spirit.
Another great read for the Suncoast Society Series - can you get the love of your life back in your life even after your both have been married and now divorced - he's my best friend from school, I've been hurt in a career ending accident on the field, he invites me to move in with him and help take care if me while I heal. An exciting outcome.
I seem to have a love hate relationship with this series. I either love a book or it just doesn't do it for me. This book moved to fast for me and felt a little cheesy. I'm a sucker for a happy ending and look forward to maybe seeing this couple more in future books.
A second chance at love. They were best friends in high school and they both "liked liked" each other but neither one said a thing. Coming back together after so many years doesn't just automatically work. There are hurdles jump and life to life.
I got this book because I have the series. As a non-sports fan I didn't expect to like Lee so much. The real between Arlin and Lee comes off as natural and comfortable. I love both the main and secondary characters.
This was a quick read for me I finished it in one sitting. A second chance romance between best friends from high school who reconnected 20 years later. This addition to the series was no drama and low angst.
