In 2014 Cape published Plumdog, a year’s worth of entries from Emma Chichester Clark’s blog of the same name which records the daily life of Plum, her dog, in Plum’s own words and Emma’s delightful illustrations. It was seized on by dog lovers everywhere and became the bestselling book written by a dog of that year … indeed quite possibly since records began.
Another Year of Plumdog is exactly what it says: another year of leaping, catching balls, diving into rivers, puddles, the North Sea, and hanging out with friends.
A sweet graphic novel chronicling a year in the life of Plum, a smallish black dog, as she and her owners spend time in London and the countryside in all weathers, meet various human and canine friends, and encounter changes large and small. The drawing style reminds me very much of Posy Simmonds’s.
Favorite lines:
“Sunday 7th February: If anyone makes a rude noise or an awful smell in our house they always say “Oh, Plum!” It’s so unfair and I’m fed up with it.”
“Tuesday 22nd November: The day of the dreaded raincoat is here again.”
The title sums up what this book is all about: another year of "leaping, catching balls, diving into rivers, puddles, the North Sea, and hanging out with friends", as narrated by Plum the whoosell, and exquisitely illustrated by Emma Chichester Clark. But this follow-up is rather more melancholy than the first volume, with a major human death and funeral, and a farewell to one of Plum's dog chums, which are both surprisingly moving. However, this is still another delightful, uplifting, and cheerful tale with wonderful pictures of Plum and her human and canine family and friends.
These illustrated books about Plum's life are just so happily enjoyable and the coloring brought so much brightness in my life.
I love it as an adult, I love the art style, the prose, clever thoughts Emma Chichester Clark thinks Plums thinks, and coloring, and this is amazing for kids as well.
I true dog lover's book written by Emma Chichester Clark's dog Plumdog. It is a year of the trips and fun Plumdog has with his owners, family, and friends of both people and dog variety. It is obvious that Ms Clark understands her dogs and who is really in charge.
These books are meant to be enjoyed over and over, with laughs and good times to be shared. Don't miss any of her wonderful collection of Plumdog!
Last nights evening read was the very lovely and funny Plumdog by Emma Chichester Clark (and of course Plummie herself!) Any dog owner will be able to identify with the daily adventures and trials of the Plumdog series. Loveable, mischievous and full of fun, these diary comics will warm up any grey day :) 🐾
This is the sweetest, funniest and most gorgeous graphic novel ever! It's a year in the life of Plum and her owner, Emma (the author). The illustrations are lovely and Plum is a funny and insightful protagonist (for a dog!). Probably a fun book to give to dog lovers.
2023 review: I had forgotten that I had already read this. It is still a delightful book and definitely worth revisiting. It is a graphic diary of Plum, the author's dog, from her POV. it is now 6 years old but there really still isn't anything else like it on the market (despite the proliferation of graphic novels and other highly-illustrated formats in the past few years)
Plum has one of the most delightful voices you can imagine. Emma's drawings are gorgeous - such idyllic landscapes, even the wet and dreary ones; and such sly humour in the smallest details (watch out for regular eyerolling by the adults, and grumpy expressions in people caught in bad weather). The overall effect is fun and infectiously joyous even if you are not a doglover.
2019 review: If anything, this sequel was better than the original. Plumdog's voice is cheekier and more sharply defined than ever. Very funny, and beautiful artwork.
