For the first time in over a century the ghost of Castle Caldon was hopeful. Not too hopeful, mind you, since Lady Anne and Sir John Kent seemed determined to thwart most attempts at companionship. But Jared St. Legere had to help those two mortals find a true, forever love so that he could be reunited with his ghostly beloved.
I picked this one up after reading Stardust of Yesterday as part of the Haunting Hearts series. It starts out rather well with a widow whose abusive marriage has put her off men forever and a retired military captain looking to settle down. Add in a pair of ghosts and rumors of treason and I was intrigued. But as the story revealed, I found my interest waned. The hero is a bit of a know it all and the heroine is prone to hysterics. The developing romance takes up a majority of the storyline and the push and pull, especially on the heroine's part got old quick. I also didn't like that the hero kept lying to heroine about his actions with her children. One ghost does nothing but bluster all the time the other one is rarely seen. Plotlines roam all over the place and the romantic conflict felt terrible contrived. By half way through I was bored out of my mind. Once we discover who the real betrayer was, the story picks up but not enough to make this a recommended read.
This was one of those books that you aren't sure if it's going to be a good one. It was great!! You fall in love with the characters. Sir John as the twins, Brandon and Brian's guardian.is a retired officer of the Kings dragoons. He has come home to check on his wards and castle. The twins, mother Anne is determined to never depend on a man again. Her marriage to the twins father was a nightmare. There are 2 ghosts trapped in on earth till they can help their great-great grandson's mother Anne find her forever love. It is an awesomely sweet romance and there is danger and a lost letter and lies and a traitor to reveal just an all round fun read. I loved it.
Ok, where do I start? Well, first of all whenever I don't like a certain book I do not blame it on the author just because everybody is different and what might be a great story for many is not so good for me. The reason is that I am very picky and strict when it comes to a storyline or character development. I found this story in particular to lack some of the main elements that I like to come about in a book. First, I thought the story could have had more depth. Personally, I thought that the characters were not that great. Moreover, I would have loved to see more of the relationship between Bethany and Jared. I felt that the book focused utterly in Anne and John's starting relationship.
Once again I am not saying the book sucks, is just that it is not my favorite.
