We see them facing natural enemies in the land, and having their tranquillity shattered by bushrangers as well as rebellious convicts, military officers and gold diggers. With them we hear the sounds of distant war. We meet the men they honoured, and we read of efforts by poets and orators to turn the Australian experience into history.

Charming social history of Australia covering the major events and minutiae of Australian society between 1788-1870 . Shame Inglis didn't continue the series.

This book is really good for understanding Australia not from the perspective as a country, but from the perspective of the people within it. Wish there was more about aboriginals though.
