The school of "Spectral Music" was established in France in the early 1970s by Tristan Murail and Gerard Grisey. It has become one of the most important schools of composition in contemporary music. These two issues of Contemporary Music Review provide a broad overview of spectral music's historic roots, composers, aesthetics, and techniques. The school's composers now span three generations and enrich their music using a large variety of styles. Their compositions are written for all types of instrumental groupings and often take advantage of technological advances to enrich their musical palettes. Joshua Fineberg is a composer, teacher and researcher, whose works have been performed and commissioned by leading music institutions and ensembles from around the world. He currently teaches at Columbia University in NY.
