The father of Semyonov was Jewish, the editor of the newspaper “Izvestia”, Semyon Alexandrovich Lyandres. In 1952 he was arrested as "an accomplice of the Bukharin counterrevolutionary conspiracy" and severely beaten during the interrogations; he became partially paralyzed as the result. His mother was Russian, Galina Nikolaevna Nozdrina, a history teacher.
His wife Ekaterina Sergeevna was a step-daughter of Sergey Vladimirovich Mikhalkov (the wedding took place on 12 April 1955). Though their family life was quite complicated, Ekaterina Sergeevna devotedly kept looking after her husband after the stroke which happened to him in 1990.
They had two daughters – Daria and Olga. The elder one, Daria, is an artist, and the younger, Olga Semyonova, is a journalist and a writer, an author of the autobiographical books about her father.
In 1953 Semyonov graduated from Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies, the Middle-East department. Then he taught the Afghan language (Pashto) in Moscow State University and simultaneously studied there in the faculty of history.
After gaining a degree of an interpreter in the University, Semyonov had diplomatic business in East Asia countries, continuing at the same time his scientific studies in Moscow State University (specializing in Persian history and politics).
Since 1955 he started to try his hand in journalism: he was published in key Soviet newspapers and magazines of that time: “Ogoniok”, “Pravda”, “Literaturnaya Gazeta”, “Komsomolskaya Pravda”, “Smena” etc.
In 1960s – 1970s Semyonov worked abroad a lot as a reporter of the said editions (in France, Spain, Germany, Cuba, Japan, the USA, Latin America). His journalist activity was full of adventures, often dangerous ones – at the moment he was in the taiga with tiger hunters, or at the polar station, at the next he was at the Baikal-Amur Mainline construction and diamond pipe opening. He was constantly in the centre of the important politic events of those years – in Afghanistan, Francoist Spain, Chile, Cuba, Paraguay, tracing the Nazi, who sought cover from punishment, and Sicilian mafia leaders; taking part in the combatant operations of the Vietnamese and Laotian partisans.
Semyonov was one of the pioneers of “Investigative journalism” in the Soviet periodicals. Thus, in 1974 in Madrid he managed to interview a Nazi criminal, the favourite of Hitler Otto Skorzeny, who categorically refused to meet any journalist before. Then, being the “Literaturnaya Gazeta” newspaper correspondent in Germany, the writer succeeds in interviewing the reichsminister Albert Speer and one of the SS leaders Karl Wolff.
The conversations with such people, as well as holding the investigation regarding the searches for the Amber Room and other cultural values moved abroad from Russia during World War II were published by Semyonov in his documentary story “Face to Face” in 1983.
In 1986 Semyonov became the President of the International Association of Detective and Political Novel (Russian: МАДПР), which he himself initiated to create, and the editor-in-chief of the collected stories edition “Detective and Politics” (the edition was published by the said Association together with the Press Agency “Novosti” and played an important role in popularization of the detective genre in the USSR.
Semyonov’s participation in searching for the famous Amber Room together with Georges Simenon, James Aldridge, baron von Falz-Fein and other famous members of the International Amber Room Searching Committee achieved wide renown.

Renuncio. Me ha costado entender de qué iba desde el minuto cero y, aunque se presenta como "el James Bond soviético", tiene poco de novela policíaca o de espías. Un peñazo en toda regla.

Novela histórica acerca del contrabando de diamantes entre la Rusia y la Estonia soviética, poco después del triunfo de la revolución.
La trama tiene momentos interesantes, pues hacen gala los servicios secretos y personajes históricos que dan un gran realismo al relato. Sin embargo, la novela cae en un polvorín de personajes y enredos que la hacen difícil de seguir hasta que me han llevado a un punto de no retorno aburrido.
Es el comienzo de una saga de novelas protagonizadas por el agente secreto Isáiev, que tampoco se puede decir que era el protagonista en esta entrega. De hecho, hay tantos personajes que uno no acierta a elegir cuál es el principal, ni mucho menos a trazar un perfil psicológico de alguno de ellos.

Не мога да не сравнявам всички книги от поредицата за Щирлиц със "17 мига от пролетта". Интересно ми беше да науча повече за младостта на съветския шпионин, но за съжаление в "Брилянти за диктатурата на пролетариата" той е по-скоро второстепенен герой, който отсъства от действието почти през цялото време. През повечето време книгата ми беше скучна, но не мога да не оценя обективното отношение на Юлиан Семьонов към събитията непосредствено след Октомврийската революция и смелостта му да покаже и тъмната страна на болшевизма.

Un 2,5 llarg.
M'ha decebut una mica. El plantejament em sembla molt interessant però l'he trobat una mica massa enrevessat. Al final, l'índex onomàstic ajuda a fer encaixar peces del tauler però durant la lectura és massa fàcil perdre't. Molts personatges, massa potser, amb noms molt semblants i que van canviat. Lectura per fer-se amb una atenció molt minuciosa que evidentment jo no he pogut fer.

Формально старт, а в реальности пятая книга о Штирлице, написанная в уже сформированном, никогда не меняющемся стиле писателя, который тот натягивал на любой материал: хоть разведку, хоть милицию, хоть журнализм.
И читаются "Бриллианты для диктатуры" именно как усталая работа ремесленника, полностью заваливая задачу приквела - объяснить генезис своего протагониста. Двадцатилетний Владимиров ничем не отличается от сорокаплюслетнего всем известного штандартенфюрера СС: так же носит дымчатые очки, использует те же самые обороты речи и даже с собственным отцом спорит ровно так же, как на допросе с физиком Рунге в "17 мгновениях..".
Произведение, пытающееся найти баланс между шпионским и детективным, беспомощно падает на пятую точку. Вместо того чтобы быть крепкой процедуркой или даже попробовать развернуться динамичным нарративом в духе "Неуловимых мстителей", что, учитывая эпоху, молодость и вроде как неопытность героя, кажется вполне рабочим вариантом, случается немедленное погружение в привычное семёновское болото сюжетных ответвлений, нулевой динамики, взвода неотличимых персонажей, гуляющего из романа в роман автора, просто меняя имена, балаболя одну и ту же псевдоинтеллектульную муру.
Почему в простейшей коррупционной истории с воровством алмазов из Гохрана должны участвовать президент Эстонии, английский посол, польские офицеры, немецкие резиденты, вся верхушка ЧК во главе с Дзержинским, Литвинов, Каменев, Ленин и все их друзья, родственники и домашние животные - загадка. Даже писатель талантливее с трудом удержал бы под контролем такое стадо, а у Семёнова же повествование превращается в набор бессвязных кусков, в которых он ещё и постоянно противоречит сам себе. Презрительные выпады к "дерущимся" и "стреляющим" шпионам из бульварной макулатуры, оборачиваются вербовкой врага путём пары ударов по морде, звериная серьёзность - сеансами чувственного массажа, проводимого разведчиком сокамернику, а сложная многоходовочка с ограблением века выливается в двух урок с пером и наганом, не сумевших преодолеть сторожа с берданкой у входа.
Всё это дополняется издевательскими разговорами про верный путь литератора - странный фетиш, не дающий покоя многим графоманам, а так же инфантильным изображением чекистов первой волны, которые до Сталина все были не только с горящим сердцем и чистыми руками, но с крыльями и нимбом.
По итогу в вообще не блистающем качеством цикле "Бриллианты..." хоть и не опустились до уровня совсем позорной "Экспансии", но со своей перегруженной, безэмоциональной конструкцией, в которой герою так по сути и не нашлось места, остановились от неё не так уж и далеко.

Coincido con otras reseñas, difícilmente se puede decir que el chequista Isaiev sea el protagonista del libro, tal es la cantidad de subtramas y personajes que aparecen entrelazados, todo lo cual puede hacer difícil seguir la lectura. No obstante la ambientación es muy buena, con abundantes referencias y algunos pasajes profundos que hacen que merezca la pena.

Столкновение противоположных мирвоззрений, жизненные обстоятельства делающие из людей нелюдей, потеря прошлого и неясное будущее. Лишь малый перечень того с чем сталкиваются герои книги проживая свои жизни в переломной момент истории для своей Родины, близких, самих себя.

Очень понравился роман, особенно в исполнении чтеца Александра Клюквина. Очень ярко и реалистично описаны и события и переживания/мысли всех героев. Как-будто сам на какой-то миг оказался в том времени.

Quitando que he pasado el 90% perdido con los nombres de los cuarenta protagonistas, me ha maravillado el trasfondo, los personajes y las reflexiones sobre literatura rusa.

Claramente este libro no era para mí. Demasiado complejo, demasiados nombres rusos, apodos y patronímicos. Es un libro estupendo pero me ha costado la vida.

Maravillosa novela de la Rusia revolucionaria de 1921. Novela negra con ingredientes de geopolítica, espías y la labor titánica que hizo la URSS para sacar el país adelante después de la primera guerra mundial, la Revolución de Octubre y la guerra civil.
