Someone Like You

Have you ever fallen for the wrong person? Maggie Zurek is a high-powered executive who just pulled off the crowning achievement of her business career. Her future looks bright, but when a sleep-deprived car accident causes her family to send her on a forced vacation, Maggie is furious. It’s the worst possible time to waste two weeks at an island on the Maine coast. But she’s even more furious when she discovers that her sister signed her up for a self-help painting class with a teacher who is Maggie’s polar opposite. Delphine Moss is free-spirited and reckless, a woman who shamelessly flaunts convention. She delights in challenging Maggie’s perfectionism and rigid views, and in spite of herself, Maggie is entranced by Delphine’s siren song. She’s never fallen for a woman before, so Maggie is utterly unprepared for the storm of emotions that Delphine excites in her. And there’s nothing Maggie hates more than feeling unprepared. A passionate encounter leaves Maggie shaken to her very foundations, and she leaves the island, vowing never to set eyes on Delphine again. But in the course of a year, fate—a force Maggie never believed in—conspires to turn both of their lives upside down, and their unlikely reunion sends Maggie’s inhibitions up in smoke. As the two women join forces to save Delphine’s island, Maggie struggles to come to terms with her feelings. Can two people who are so fundamentally different ever be happy together? And if Maggie allows herself to truly fall for Delphine, will Delphine ever see her as more than a conquest?

Marian Snowe is an author of lesbian romantic fiction. She can often be found talking to trees, examining flower petals with a magnifying glass, or venturing with small steps into the frigid New England ocean. She lives with her vivacious, adventure-loving wife, Ruby Grandin, and two cats. She loves to settle down in a meadow or at her desk by a window (with a good view of the birdfeeder!) to write stories about ladies in love.

This is an opposites attract romance with all the ups and downs one could imagine in between. Marian Snowe is a new author to me but on the strength of this well written novel I can see our paths crossing quite often.
This is a very refreshing read of a standard trope. The writing is exceptional and engaging. The characters are likeable, one a pure business woman and the other an artist whose feet never touch the ground.
I really enjoyed this novel and spent the day immersed in it.

Romance tightly woven with fate and infused with confusion.

Maggie and Delphine mix like oil and water. Delphine is the wild child, hippy and artistic. Maggie is a by the numbers workaholic, business genius. Maggie hates the alternative reality where Delphine exists. When they come together in an art class, of all places, tension flares. Oil paints frustrate the perfectionist in Maggie, so she quits the art class. Delphine acts decisively and puts a paintbrush back in her hand to try painting with watercolors. The magic of fate pulls together what cold, hard logic tries to pull apart.

Another charming and endearing novel from Marian Snowe. I was happily swept along on the ride. The writing is clean and the characters exude personality. The ending doesn't matter and I wished that it hadn't come so quickly. Still every candy store needs to close by day's end. I look forward to the next book by this inspired author.

It was a really sweet romance which was at times hilarious. Both the MCs pulled off just the right amount of sweetness and stupidity. Totally recommend it.

Engaging and a delight to read!

Maggie is very content with her life and she loves her work. Her work dominated her life and therefore she has no time for relationships. One accident, an unwanted holiday and the meeting with an unusual woman changes a lot in her life. Both women are polar opposite, they live in two different worlds and their personalities are very different too. What do they have in common and how are they different? Can what they have withstand their polar opposites? Can they works things out or has fate made a mistake? The road to love takes you on all kind of twists and turns but eventually, no matter what the obstacles are, love will find a way to bloom. Marian perfectly describes the inner turmoil of Maggie. The vivid descriptions of each scene place me as if I was there with them. It was written in a very vibrant and colorful way. The story is engaging and an excellent read. I wasn't ready for it to be over. Again a great book by Marian Snowe.

The plot was okay, for some reason it couldn’t hold my interest like great books usually do. I kept finding my mind wandering. I finally skipped a chunk in the middle—maybe 15%? Didn’t seem like I missed anything integral, but it’s possible. Not the kind of book that will stick with me. I’ll give this author another try though, since the writing was decent.

My thoughts on “Someone Like You”

1. Honestly, I was intrigued with the synopsis. Although, opposite’s attract stories were nothing new, curiosity got the best of me.

2. At first it was interesting when Maggie started her “forced vacation” where she met Delphine. Eventually, it was tiresome...their relationship, the teasing, the mixed signals, the flirting just didn’t work for me.

3. Everything was too descriptive. It’s too lengthy. The description of the island, a dress, the painting...it’s just too overwhelming. What it lacked is how the author narrate the intensity of the feelings between the two women. Well, she might’ve but it was “overkill” because of all the “descriptions” you had to go through.

4. Too many conflicts. One conflict started strong (can pique your interest) but fell short. After reading it, you thought it wasn’t that relevant. Or the story can still be intact without that plot.

5. Maggie hooking up with Claudia was interesting. It got me excited for a little but again, it became too descriptive...everything which bored me...again.

6. I skipped a lot of pages.

7. Didn’t feel Maggie and Delphine’s chemistry since day one.

8. I forced myself to finish this book.

9. I knew Delphine was the kid but with a name that’s unique, how could you forget it especially when you wrote letters to each other for a while?

10. Ending was ok. Kinda expected.

Fantastic

This story is a charming "odd couple" romance between an uptight, type A business woman and a free spirited artist. I found the characters to be well written and developed. Maggie, in particular, was very well done. The adult woman falling for another woman for the first time is a fairly common theme and one that is easy to miss the mark with. Maggie is portrayed convincingly because of her basic repressed and buttoned down personality as well as several comments early on mentioning her finding women attractive throughout her life but never having had any thoughts about following through on that attraction. (Or on attraction to men for the most part either... Work came first.) The character development along the way is wonderful.

Pretty good book.

I really liked this author's books but this one didn't capture me like the other ones did. But overall it was a decent book.
