Not an ordinary fairytale! Park does a wonderful job of world building with this extraordinary fantasy. Wisp is a truly fascinating character. The story runs the gamut of emotions and is beautifully told.
I hear there's another book on the way, and I can't wait!
I really enjoyed this entertaining fantasy novel. Set in Edra, a world populated by various mythical creatures as well as humans, the author's spin on the age old good versus evil tale is interesting and unique.
Wisp is a young marsh fairy who has not get come into his powers. After being orphaned at a young age, Wisp has been brought up by the chief law enforcer of the city, a human, who introduced Wisp to his world. When the body of a young male elf is discovered, Wisp is assigned the investigation. The late elf was the son of a powerful and well-connected female elf and Wisp is fascinated by her when he meets her. He also meets the elf's boyfriend, Finn, to whom he is attracted. As the details around the elf's death start to unravel, it becomes apparent that this is a lot more than a simple murder, the future of Edra is at stake. Wisp must choose his love's path and come into his full powers in order to help save the day.
Meanwhile, dark and malevolent creatures are stalking the city and killing at will. Wisp, Finn, and a goblin assistant must try and stop the murders as well as discovering a way to end the gradual takeover of the city by evil forces.
I enjoyed the author's vivid depictions of the various mythical creatures and their different natures, powers and general looks. In particular, Wisp is beautiful, and the depictions of marsh fairies are lovely. There are a few scenes of love making in this story, but they are necessary to move the story forward.
Overall, this is an entertaining novel including excellent world building and vivid writing.
This was one of the most unusual and imaginative YA fantasy stories I have read for a long time. I really loved it. I particularly enjoyed the wonderful range of characters in the novel, which Ms. Park brought to life via her engaging writing style. I especially loved Wisp, a marsh fairy law enforcer.
The dialogue flowed effortlessly and the narrative kept me engaged throughout with some really exciting passages and witty repartee. I am so looking forward to reading the second book in this series.
Adele Marie Park shows great promise. This is her debut novel and I will definitely be following this author’s progress with great interest and much excitement.
YAY!!!
Ms. Park has also written stories for several anthologies including The Box Under The Bed, edited by Dan Alatorre, Plaisted Publishing Ghostly Writes Anthology, The Darkest Midnight in December: Ghost Stories for the Winter Season Anthology, and Betrayals of Another Kind: 2016 Fantasy Writers Anthology.
My rating of Wisp: 4.5 stars.
A definite recommendation for readers of fantasy readers, LGBT YA Fiction, (male love affair.)
This starts off like any murder mystery – except for the players. A dead elf, and a marsh faerie law enforcer who is hiding what he is. So starts a tale that transforms quickly from the expected into a story of epic scale originating in a past war with dark echoes that bring unavoidable pain and horror to a new generation. There is also love, against a backdrop of betrayal and secrets that keeps you turning the pages. The world building has satisfying scope and detail, and the characters all shine with clear thoughts and motivations. This is a complete story, but with huge dangling threads at the end to lead on into the next book, which I plan on reading. My reason for 4 stars rather than 5? It isn’t one of my favourite writing styles: omniscient viewpoint, so plenty of head-hopping, and large sections of text with ‘he’ and ‘him’ without qualification, so I sometimes had to concentrate too hard on deciding which ‘he’ and ‘him’ was being referred to. This is personal taste, and in no way detracts from the highly imaginative plot and world.
Meet Wisp, a law enforcer in the land of Edra, where magic is encouraged to flourish and is often needed for sheer survival. A mages council rules Edra compared to the neighboring area of Finah, who prefers humans to control their resources. After a bloody civil war, many years ago, the two lands exist beside each other in a fragile peace.
Wisp is a marsh fairy (YES! Can you believe it?) with raven hair and pointy ears pierced with silver earrings. Marsh fairies are rare and possess special powers. Wisp keeps his real identity under wraps, known only to his superiors. Abandoned as a child, the “Senior” Law enforcement officer raised him ensuring his survival.
In a desolate area filled with putrefying rubbish, Wisp comes across the body of a High Elf, a member of the Thorns, who was a high-ranking council member found murdered in the circle. The elf’s throat had been brutally cut. Wisp sets out to solve the murder not realizing he is to play an integral part in solving the mystery.
Wisp meets Finn Redhaven, the lover of the murdered elf, Sammiel Thorn, and feels an immediate attraction to him. Wisp and Finn fall in love and discover a wealth of magical abilities enabled by their relationship. And, they are going to need all the help they can get to battle the evil that has descended on Edra.
As fantasy novels go, Wisp stands out to me in its originality and political intrigue. Ms. Park creates a world where love is considered to be one of the greatest powers of all. I enjoyed that the two main characters were male and embraced their love and desire for each other, which was a refreshing approach to solving a mystery in a magical land. The reader discovers along with Wisp the extent of his abilities which I anticipate will increase over time.
I’ve added Wisp to my Me Time category for Fantasy. I loved the story and the characters. The ending is a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait for the next volume to find out what happens to Wisp and Finn. Hopefully, Ms. Park won’t keep us in suspense for long.
