Plagued by guilt over the Tender she killed, Netra leaves her home and ventures forth alone, hoping to find the mother she has never known. But Melekath’s vengeance against the gods who imprisoned him has begun and Netra finds a populace terrorized by eyeless men whose hands burn with gray fire. Every person they capture is asked one question: What side will they choose? Those who choose wrongly burn. Will Netra’s faith—shattered by the things she has learned—be enough to save her when she is captured?
On the Landsend Plateau, Shakre, Netra’s mother, witnesses a fireball falling from the sky. From it emerges a violent, mysterious stranger, who will either save Shakre’s adopted people, or doom them. Either way, they can no longer hide from the legacy of Wreckers Gate.
Wulf Rome’s empire grows as he conquers the nearby kingdoms, aided by the powerful axe he pulled from the wall of Melekath’s prison. But when his army marches on the city of Veragin, they find everyone and everything in it dead—except for one strange man, who is not a man at all.
Quyloc enters the bizarre shadow world of the Pente Akka yet again, seeking the power that dwells in the place and all the while knowing that it is only a matter of time before the dreaded hunter traps him there forever.
While over everything looms the shadow of Melekath, who daily grows closer to returning to the world. But is he the one the people of Atria truly must fear, or is it the ancient being who claims to be their ally?
Born in 1965, I grew up on a working cattle ranch in the desert thirty miles from Wickenburg, Arizona, which at that time was exactly the middle of nowhere. Work, cactus and heat were plentiful, forms of recreation were not. The TV got two channels when it wanted to, and only in the evening after someone hand cranked the balky diesel generator to life. All of which meant that my primary form of escape was reading.
At 18 I fled to Tucson where I attended the University of Arizona. A number of fruitless attempts at productive majors followed, none of which stuck. Discovering I liked writing, I tried journalism two separate times, but had to drop it when I realized that I had no intention of conducting interviews with actual people but preferred simply making them up.
After graduating with a degree in Creative Writing in 1989, I backpacked Europe with a friend and caught the travel bug. With no meaningful job prospects, I hitchhiked around the U.S. for a while then went back to school to learn to be a high school English teacher. I got a teaching job right out of school in the middle of the year. The job lasted exactly one semester, or until I received my summer pay and realized I actually had money to continue backpacking.
The next stop was Australia, where I hoped to spend six months, working wherever I could, then a few months in New Zealand and the South Pacific. However, my plans changed irrevocably when I met a lovely Swiss woman, Claudia, in Alice Springs. Undoubtedly swept away by my lack of a job or real future, she agreed to allow me to follow her back to Switzerland where, a few months later, she gave up her job to continue traveling with me. Over the next couple years we backpacked the U.S., Eastern Europe and Australia/New Zealand, before marrying and settling in the mountains of Colorado, in a small town called Salida.
In Colorado we starved and froze, started our own electronics business, and had a couple of sons, Dylan and Daniel. In 2005 we shut the business down and moved back to Tucson.
I am currently working on finishing The Devastation Wars fantasy series and attending graduate school.
You're just totally engrossed in the story and them bam! you realize you just read the cliffhanger! Love book 2 more than book one. Can't wait to read the next one. The momentum of the stories were well paced. Give me more.
This book begins to bring more characters closer to a cohesive unit to battle the unseen god that is behind the Veil trying to get out. I don’t know how to write a good review that conveys my thoughts on a book except to say that I really enjoyed this book and you will too.
You know how sometimes sequels come out and they are majorly lame? This isn't one of them. If you haven't read Wrecker's Gate first, (Immortality and Chaos Book 1) I recommend you do! I'm not sure the english language has the proper words to describe how great this book is! I love getting to follow Netra on her journey to find her mother and figure out what's going on in the world at large. Also in this story you get to meet the people that live on the top of Landsend Plateau, an unforgiving place full of dangers in every form. This was one of my favorite parts of this book because you get to see what that big scary guy on the cover is all about :D Of course we have to check in on our pals Rome and Quyloc. These guys have a unique relationship and even when it's stressed they are unfaltering in their loyalty to each other. Quyloc continues to struggle to find a weapon to aid in the coming war while Rome assembles an army to help create a vast and unyielding empire.
The scenes of this grand adventure play out in the cinema of my brain like a blockbuster movie with all the action, plot twists and in depth character building I am coming to expect from Eric T. Knight and his books. I need to take a minute to talk about the magic system he uses, because it's freakin' awesome and completely unique! As a fantasy fan I have honestly NEVER seen it's like. Things like Lifesong, Selfsong, Akirma, Flows and going "beyond" have totally blown me away! The way he has taken fantasy and turned it upside down with his use of the above mentioned things is through originality and an obviously bottomless imagination! Eric T. Knight is a literary master Chef, knowing exactly the right ingredients to give you a three course gut busting meal that will leave you both extremely satisfied and needing more. So between a crazy unique magic system, characters that I feel like I personally know now (don't worry about how many 'real' friends I have) unparalleled action and an amazing sense of humor throughout (seriously I laughed out loud so many times while reading this, I'm pretty sure my family thinks I may be a little psychotic.(my mental health is fine. The voices told me so)I can't help but love this tale. Also I really like the over-sized copper skinned surprise in this book, maybe even my favorite thing. If you want to know what that surprise is..Read this book!
Bottom line is Landsend Plateau is benchmark fantasy that people will be aspiring to for generations to come. Don't miss out on the adventure, I know I won't!
Book 2 in this series started strong and I thought, finally this is getting good. But, just when the story was interesting, the author goes back to what I can only call character building. Over 600 pages read, and still my interest level in this story is low. I will try one more book in the hope that this story gets exciting, as the author showed possibilies at the beginning of book 2. If I had not purchased the entire series up front, I would have stopped reading.
So, the story continues... The second book in the Immortality and Chaos series is as engaging and emotionally involving as the first one. Again, it consists of two parts, though the events in both are strongly connected and parallel in time.
In the first part we get to meet Shakre, Netra's mother, who lives among the people of an ancient tribe of Takare, once powerful, almost unbeatable warriors, who centuries ago vowed never to kill a human being again and have stuck to that vow... until now. Will they break the oath and kill again or will they retain the old ways even in the face of a merciless enemy? And what will Shakre do when the people she learned to love face death? We also follow Netra in her journey; her instincts - or maybe her destiny - lead her towards Landsend Plateau, where her mother lives... Will they meet? And what will she really be capable of doing, as her powers obviously grow stronger each time she uses them?
The second part takes us back to Qarath where Quyloc still tries to retrieve the weapon Lowellin wants him to get, Rome starts to build an army to be ready for Melekath's return and the Tenders obtain mysterious "sulbits", creatures feeding on LifeSong, which according to Lowellin are the only weapon they might have against the foe. But is Lowellin trustworthy? Or does he have "plans within plans within plans"? The more we get to know him, the less we like him and the less we trust him... But maybe we are wrong and he's right that one life means nothing when millions are at stake?
"Landend Plateau" poses even more questions than "Wreckers Gate" did, and still doesn't give us any answers. It's fast-paced, with great imagery and fantastically developed characters. The ones we already know as well as a bunch of new ones - Rome, Quyloc, Netra, Shakre, Rehobim, Nalene, Shorn... all of them are real, relateable, deep, with as many virtues as weaknesses... None of them will leave you indifferent. And nor will the fate of the world they try to save... or destroy.
So, if you haven't started on the series yet, definitely go grab part one and read it as fast as you can because part two is even better.
The 2nd book in the series in which we get to meet Shakre, Netra's mother who is living with the Takare, a people who had fled to landsend plateau and who had pledged themselves to the God Tu Sinar. They vowed to never kill another human being and to revere life, Shakre is a healer who still retains the powers she had as a tender and can go beyond and hear lifesong. The prison of Malaketh is breaking and Tu Sinar has been destroyed but cannot die, his people had to flee or die and a group decided to once again take up weapons and fight! On the other hand Quyloc is still visiting Pente Akka trying hard to overcome the evil monsters behind the veil to acquire the weapon Lowellin sent him to get, meanwhile he is getting stronger in his inner hearing and intuition. The tenders working with Lowellin in Quarath in the meantime acquire sulbits who feed of their own lifesong but according to Lowellin will be needed in the final battle! No one is really trusting Lowellin most especially Wolf Rome and Quyloc himself and even the tenders are afraid of him and now T'Sim appears on the scene and Lowellin knows him so who is Lowellin and whose side is he really on? Good or evil? He is definitely manipulating everyone he can to gain the greatest power!! This is a great series full of twists and turns, magical creatures and powers of lifesong and self song and i really have to go on reading!!
Still not feeling especially wowed by this series. I bought them all in a box set, and read 1 and 2 back to back, but I'm going to take a break. Not sure why I don't like it more. It's epic, and the world building is cohesive, the writing is pretty good, too. It just doesn't suck me in to the point I forget I'm reading.
Might be because I have always disliked the mysterious characters who come and go and have single-minded goals, and are generally jerks with no sense of humor. Or pop up and there doesn't seem to be any explanation... [mild spoiler ahead] of where they come from. . . . . .
Like "Whoa, is that an alien?" When there's been no hint of even alien mythology... Even when we get into that character's head, we only get more questions, not answers.
Almost all the women seem kinda juvenile, as do most of the men, making me wonder how old the author is. 🤔 I haven't yet met a character I could really get behind and root for. Except maybe Quyloc.
So my rating is 3.5 stars. I will continue reading the series, but I'm not in any hurry to finish.
This story picks up with a new cast of characters and returns to the original cast near the 2nd half of the book.
I think this second book is a significant improvement over the first. Mr. Knight's writing improved as you'd expect.
I found the first half the best of the series so far. The characters are more interesting and I was invested in their success.
He's built up an interesting world that has a rich history.
Some of the characters are pretty simplistic. One character, Rome, is particularly light in development. He's a general-turned-king (or "macht" in this world) who just walks around making a mess of traditions and external expectations in an oafish kind of way and so far, never faces any consequences. OTOH, the female character lead in the first half of the story is actually quite interesting (relatively speaking anyway) and I look forward to learning more of her story.
Mr. Knight continues to prove he is a master storyteller. In this second book of Immortality and Chaos, the main characters continue to develop and grow with more excitement as the story seamlessly flows from book one. Wolf Rome will do whatever it takes to protect his people and one way to do that is to build an empire with a great army. Quyloc struggles to find an ancient power to help Rome without losing his humanity! He doesn't know if he can do it, or will death be his reward? Netra has given up all she has known to search for her mother, who she has never met. On her quest she faces one terror after another! New characters are introduced in this book, some heroic and some terrifying! Melekath is growing stronger, will he break free from his prison? This is an exciting book, a must read!
What a whirlwind of action! This book is packed with so much awesomeness, it's practically bursting at the seams!! The world building is MASTERFULLY done!! I just want to crawl inside the books, go beyond the veil, get my own weapon and kick some serious ass! I LOVE the sulbits--so small, dangerous, and mysterious. I'm so excited to see what happens with them! Rome and Quyloc are still my favorites, but what happens to Netra and Nalene and the introduction of Shorn---bahhh!! I cannot wait to get into the next book!! Eric Knight is such an amazing writer! Don't be surprised when he becomes a household name!!
The immortality and chaos series is an imaginative adventure. The writing appears simplistic and nature yet the underlying story contains introspection into our deepest human nature and challenges our strongest beliefs The author’s writing and complexity of the story excelled in Hungers reach. I am delving right in to Oblivion’s Grasp! Thank you Eric, you are awesome!
I liked this book a little better than the first one in the series. The books are creative...it's not the same old story! I like it like that. The book is divided into two parts, each part dealing with a different geographical area and different main character(s). If you start at the second book, you may miss the connection. I definitely recommend starting with the first book, Wreckers Gate.
The sage continues Netra trying to find her mother and Encounters obstacles making her jurney difficult. Macht Rome contines to build an army. Skakre continues to help the Takare. Nalene the First of the Tenders with the help from the Protector, Lowellin becomes stronger as the time towards the dark war approches. A very good reading.
The plot takes some twists. Rome, Quyloc and Netra all continue to be interesting characters. Nalene is starting to realize that she’s in over her head, but she is determined to carry out her vision for the Tenders. I’m pretty sure I caught some interesting foreshadowing with Rome and Quyloc, but we’ll see.
Great! The epic stories of our favorite characters continue through struggles and horrors as they fight to survive and figure out how to save their world. I’m ready for the next part of their story!
I have really enjoyed the journey. Book 2 continued to develop characters, bring the reader deeper into the story and the world, and it did not disappoint!
This book is moving the Melekath Drama closet to Rome, the new military leader and more and more pieces to the puzzle are developing. Very well written and exciting read
I love how Eric T Knight weaves the storyline around the characters and events with such great depth and detail. A worthwhile read and a fun prequel series!
The Immortality and chaos series moves forward again. We now meet Netra’s mother and return to see Berra as well as the further adventures of Wulf Rome and his second in Comnand Quyloc. The action is coming thick and fast and I’m looming forward to part three.
The author has some really clever writing going on here! I am enjoying this series as well as the ones available so far in the follow-up series, Chaos and Retribution! Creative and unique.
Loved this book especially the first part. Netra and Shakre are characters that you just have to root for and you can relate to their struggles and Shorn is a beast in the best sense of the word!
After the introductions in book 1 then the book 2 moves up nicely to a good speed as it all begins to make sense. The writing is excellent and the action picks up to the point where the reader can be engrossed in a masterful tale. Its taken a time but the slower characters dont drag at the story as much but help it a lot. It does seem to go through quite fast so perhaps a little longer would be excellent.
Picks up right from the end of wreckers gate. You definetly need to read in order. Characterization is flawlessly built drawing you deeper into the story of these hardy survivors in an unforgiving land. Tenders and others are having to regain their power to fight off demons and gods are team urging to fight an epic battle of good and evil. Awesome job Eric. Can't wait to start the third and fourth. While eagerly awaiting this summers fifth book!
A great sequel to Wreker's Gate. Netra continues to grow. We meet an learn more about Shakre (Netra's mother). All characters progress into well developped individuals. It kept me guessing as to the true motives and plans of a couple characters well truly developping our bond as a reader with the characters. Can't wait to read the next book. Good action Great suspense and above all superb story telling.
