Construct 11 is a building where the surviving population of the final global war have come to live. The Leadership that emerged from the war created the perfect structure for the survivors to be safe from poverty, sickness and starvation. Locked behind the walls of Construct 11 for their safety, the survivors thrived. Four generations have been born within the walls with everything they have ever needed provided for them. Now the true cost of their perfect society is being realized. Will they be able to hold their community together or will the knowledge of the truth disintegrate the framework of their existence?
I think the author of "Construct 11 - part 1" could just be onto a winner here, I was very pleasantly surprised at just how good this dystopian thriller was and how such a different but interesting premise to what I normally read held my attention. Although a little slow to get into - until you are accustomed to the areas within the Construct building, all the strict rules and the characters and their 'families' - but once you've built a picture of the book's scenario you get into a cracking story that I could easily see being made into a mini TV series, since I saw similarities to the highly successful 'The Maze Runner'. Construct 11 is a building where the surviving population of the final global war have come to live. The Leadership that emerged from the war created the perfect structure for the survivors to be safe from poverty, sickness and starvation. Four generations have been born since with everything they have ever needed provided for them. Now the true cost of their perfect society is being realized. Will they be able to hold their community together or will the knowledge of the truth disintegrate the framework of their existence? There are some very solid characters in the story, I particularly liked Dan and sympathised at times with the duty he had to adhere to as Head Councilmember but at the same time sensing things were changing but powerless to do anything. 'The Easement' with Paul and Diana was sad to read about but fitted in with the story well and the author portrayed this with compassion. This is a great introduction to the "Construct" books and I have high hopes for part 2 being published soon, it would be so interesting to see what is 'outside' the Construct and perhaps even see a rebellion. A well deserved 4 stars for the start of a very promising series.
Thank you to the author and the Goodreads Giveaways for my copy.
A classic dystopian novel similar to 'City of Ember' and 'The Maze Runner'.
To be honest, the writing at the beginning was a little rough as she tried to lay the ground work for her setting (as to be expected in a author's first novel). After I got past the first few chapters and the plot line was laid out the book was well done. I liked the characters and how the story was evolving. By the end I was drawn into the story and felt like I hadn't got enough with just one book.
Probably the strongest writing point of the author was her dialog. It moved well and was enjoyable.
All in all I wished it had been longer and felt that the first book was a good set-up for what has the potential to be an excellent series.
I am writing this for Goodreads. A very different, interesting dystopian novel. Reads quickly and will hold your interest. The book left me with a number of questions I hope will be solved in future books. What happened to Constructs 1-10? Will they play a role in future books? Where do the Leaders come from? Like any good sci-fi book, this one leaves you hungry for more.
Pretty good dystopian that was incredibly easy and quick to read. I admit, I may not have given this book a chance if I hadn't won it in a giveaway, but Anna set up an interesting world and I'm curious to see where she takes it. It reminds me of Hugh Howey's Silo saga in a lot of ways and that is one of my favorite book series. Looking forward to see where this goes.
THIS BOOK MAKES YOU SIT BACK AND REFLECT ON SOCIETY AND ALL THE RULES AND REGULATIONS THAT RESTRICT US IN OUR DAILY LIVES. MISS MILLER'S CHARACTERS ARE BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN AND I WOULD EXPECT A MOVIE SOMETIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE. CHARLES R. HARRISON
Fabulous read! I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Characters draw you in and the story is great! Cant wait for the next one in the series!
This book reminded me a bit of 1984 by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, although I read these about a couple decades ago so I'm not entirely sure that any comparison is valid. The book describes a futuristic society which is tightly controlled and regimented by a strict code of laws and traditions which are enforced and upheld by a small group of leaders and enforcers. The primary character, seventeen year old "Daniel" undergoes a series of events and conversations that begin to erode his beliefs in the virtue of the system he has been raised in.
The story is a good read and I found myself definitely drawn into the story and curious about the core characters who are well developed. My favorite thing about this story is that it's an excellent parody of a society's attempt to hyper regulate and control its subjects by using tattle tale techniques, cruel punishment, and controlling of information through propaganda which masks human rights crimes as necessary steps "for the common good."
This story manages to convey a message in an entertaining way. I will definitely read Construct 11 Part 2. I want to find out the fate of Daniel and his fellow "beings."
I couldn't put this book down!! Such a compelling premise, beautifully written! To live in Construct 11 would seem wonderful on the surface, now I need to know how they escape, if they can escape, if they will even try. I'm hoping they will regain their freedom! Excited for Part 2!!
I won a print copy of Construct 11 Part 1 by Anna Lynn Miller in a Goodreads giveaway.
Construct 11 is a futuristic, dystopian society masquerading as a Utopian society (how do you think this is gonna work out?). Faintly reminiscent of Logan's Run.
Author Anna Lynn Miller does an outstanding job of bringing the reader into this closed society. Construct 11 refers to a building erected post nuclear war. The current timeline is so far removed from the war as to refer to the time as "New Clear".
This story is sooo goood! I was captivated immediately. The perfect society is starting to come apart at the seams (wouldn't be much of a story if it wasn't), or at least is not as perfect as it would like to believe. I'll let you decide that one. A refreshing aspect of Construct 11 is that the lines of conflict are not defined by age or gender or even societal status. It's nice to not have young vs old or male vs female and the like.
The author does a great job of staying grounded in the world she has created. The story remains internally consistent throughout. The characters are true to the premise. I found no inconsistencies which would upset the flow of the read.
Joy of joys! Our author does not resort to the dreaded, hated, vilified, and totally without redeeming social value cliff hanger! Since this is the first book in a series, of course the ending has to be structured to keep us interested, and it does that. So thank you, thank you, thank you Ms. Miller.
As I said, first in a series (#2 is already out). I recommend you check out Construct 11 Part 1 by Anna Lynn Miller. A great escapist read.
I enjoyed this novel of a dystopian community with conspiracies, mysterious history, and very believable characters. The story is very well written and I look forward to the next part in the series to see what happens to the inhabitants of Construct 11
** I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. **
First Impression: I'm all in for the dark and dingy dystopian fiction.
Characters: Watching Daniel awaken and question his sense of security seemed like coming up for air after diving into the water. I appreciate characters I can root for, and want to follow on their journey.
World Building: I found myself intrigued, wanting to know more about the time before Construct 11. How did we get to this place? This is a great portend of things to come in the next book. The current world is bleak like in George Orwell's 1984.
Writing Style: Miller creates a realistic future in a bunker that feels increasingly claustrophobic as the story progresses. This tension building makes me excited for the next book, as the characters start to question the world around them.
What I Enjoyed: Renaming and shifting realities is exactly what a dystopian government would do. I liked the fresh voice among the flood in this genre.
Deal Benders: I would like it to be longer - mainly to explain a bit more of how things came to be as they are. Of course something is left to the imagination and future installments, but I think drawing the readers into the backstory a bit more would create more loyalty to the series. Especially the main characters, why should I care about them?
Overall Rating: 4 stars for a fresh perspective and exciting introduction to this new world.
For Fans Of: The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, 1984
The author is in my boyfriend's writing group, and he brought home a chapter of this as an assignment from the group... but I stole it and devoured it and requested he find the actual book for me! Once I got my hands on the book, I happily read it in one weekend.
This book is a classic dystopian narrative, highly reminiscent of The Giver and Divergent, but it felt fresh and new despite the huge number of books of this genre currently clogging the system! I was initially a little worried that it was just going to be a retelling of The Giver, but the author quickly finds her own ground and creates her own intriguing storyline. I really enjoyed her construction of the dystopian world in the novel, and perhaps liked it even better (gasp) than Divergent! (I have a lootttt of critiques for Divergent, sigh)
I'm happy to see that the second book in the series is now available, as this one ends on a cliff-hanger and I was really cranky that I couldn't read more when I finished it!
