About the author

Susan Bowden was born in 1936 in Dorset, England and currently resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Susan's formal university training was interrupted by a writing career. She primarily works in the genres of historical and suspense fiction, although she has written romance novels and a young adult novel. Susan has been a speaker at conferences for the Manitoba Writers' Guild and the Canadian Authors Association. She has also served as a mentor in the Manitoba Writers' Guild mentorship program. She has done several interviews with Peter Gzowski on "CBC Morningside," and on "Arts Tonight" with Eleanor Wachtel. She has appeared as a regular opera quiz panelist on CBC's "Saturday Afternoon at the Opera."

"Το Σπίτι των Σκιών" όσο απίστευτο κι αν ακούγεται, το διάβασα σε ηλικία 12μισι χρονών. Ήταν μάλιστα το βιβλίο που με έβαλε στον κόσμο των μυστηρίων γύρω από δολοφονίες. Επειδή το διάβασα πριν τόσα χρόνια, δεν έχω και πολλά να πω γι'αυτό το βιβλίο. Βασικά, δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να πωλείται ακόμα επειδή είναι έκδοση του 2004 οπότε γίνεται κατανοητό πως άργησα πολύ να κάνω κριτική για το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο 😂 Τέλος πάντων, θυμάμαι οι περιγραφές του ήταν αρκετά λεπτομερείς και ποιητικού χαρακτήρα. Ακόμη, είχε αρκετούς συναισθηματισμούς μέσα οι οποίοι σε κάποια σημεία έκαναν το βιβλίο να έχει μια ερωτική όψη. Η συγγραφέας χρησιμοποίησε αρκετές παρομοιώσεις για να εκφράσει τα νοήματα που ήθελε να δώσει σε κάθε περίπτωση. Ακόμα θυμάμαι ένα συγκεκριμένο κεφάλαιο όπου περιέγραφε μια σκηνή που γινόταν στο δωμάτιο της Βιβιέν.. Αξέχαστη θα μου μείνει!
Επιπρόσθετα, η συγγραφέας ήξερε πως να ελίσσεται μέσα από το γράψιμό της ώστε να αποκαλύπτει τα πράγματα σταδιακά. Έτσι, μόνο στο τέλος του βιβλίου όλα έβγαλαν νόημα.
Το είδος του βιβλίου είναι ψυχολογικό θρίλερ και γι'αυτό σε αρκετά σημεία, ενώ το διάβαζα με προσήλωση, είχα αγχωθεί αρκετά για την συνέχεια. Ως αποτέλεσμα, κάθε φορά που έκανα διάλειμμα για να φάω ή κάτι τέτοιο, να σκέφτομαι συνεχώς το τι μπορεί να γίνει μετά.
Για την βαθμολογία, υπάρχει μια ιδιαιτερότητα. Κοιτάξτε. Αν την κριτική την έκανα στην ηλικία που το διάβασα, θα έβαζα σίγουρα 10/10. Όμως, αφού έχουν περάσει τόσα χρόνια από τότε κι έχω διαβάσει περισσότερα βιβλία του ίδιου είδους, έχω να πω πως δεν είχε κάτι το πολύ ξεχωριστό. Ήταν απλά μια ιστορία μυστηρίου η οποία εξελισσόταν σε μια αγχώδη πλοκή, χωρίς να υπάρχουν αρκετά plot twists. Γι'αυτό άλλωστε και τα 3 αστέρια που βάζω στην ιστορία.

This is one of my favourite novels. A three-hundred-year-old plantation great house in Barbados hides a shocking crime within its crumbling walls. Photographer, Vivien Shaw, arrives on the island during the hurricane season to collaborate on a book and finds herself swept up in buried secrets. Revealing the past puts her in the path of a murderer who will stop at nothing to keep Vivien from discovering her true identity.

A loosely veiled romance story tied to a mysterious family and home on Barbados. Interesting plot but not too many surprises. Throughout the story I kept asking myself, “Why doesn’t anyone asked what happened to Trevor?” This is of course revealed at the end and did not come as a big surprise to me. A quick and easy read.
