He has his life all planned out – until one night at a dance at the USO in town, he meets her...
A secret blurted out in a moment of anger had turned Staff Sergeant Eugene Banks’ life upside down, but he moved on and made a good life for himself. At the moment, he’s concentrating on solving a mystery he had stumbled onto at his job over the motor pool at Fort Knox.
Vivian Powell is contented with her life; she has family, friends, and a good job as a bank teller. Although she was nursing a broken heart, she has since moved forward and isn’t looking for love. At the urging of a friend, she decides to join the war effort by becoming a junior hostess at the local USO... These two people meet one fateful night at a dance, and their lives are everlastingly changed. What follows is a beautiful courtship, while dodging the fact that she signed an agreement to be available every Saturday night to dance with dozens of soldiers, and in spite of two confusing mysteries that refuse to be solved. Beautiful, that is, until Vivian catches Gene doing the very thing that he swore he would never do, and it nearly rips their romance in two! If you love stories about WWII and the “Greatest Generation” that read like you’re watching a classic movie, with handsome soldiers and beautiful girls-next-door, then Her Blue-Eyed Sergeant is for you!
This is the first book in the Soldiers of Swing series. Get it now and meet Gene and Viv.
Book 2 will be Her Blue-Eyed Corporal, and Book 3 will be Her Blue-Eyed Lieutenant.
These are clean romances that contain no profanity or illicit sex.
Linda Ellen is an historical romance writer who made her debut with Depression Era romance, rich with history, love, heartache, and real life. Linda lives in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, She began her writing career penning articles for a small neighborhood newspaper, The Southwest Reporter. In 2009, as a labor of love, she began writing fan fiction, under the pen name Linda4him59, based on the Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman television show, stories that were well-received thanks to Linda's talent for upbeat narration, good-natured humor, and heart-thumping romance. Twenty-eight short stories and four novels later, she decided to try her hand at writing a ‘real’ novel. Her novel ONCE IN A WHILE is loosely based on the author's parents’ romance in the late ‘30’s. Wishing to give her readers the most accurate account of the time, place, and mood, she extensively researched details regarding the 1937 flood that incapacitated the entire Ohio Valley. The Flood plays a large part in the early chapters of the book. The local newspaper did a story on her, her mom, and the book - click here: http://www.courier-journal.com/story/...
When she isn't busy writing stories to enchant her readers, Linda, a born-again Christian, and her family are faithful and active members of Evangel World Prayer Center in Louisville, KY. She is very involved in the prison ministry at her church, where she is the office manager and is in charge of facilitating a large correspondence course operation with a sizable number of volunteers, serving inmates in all 50 states.
I haven't read many WWII era books, but this one makes me want to read more. Instead of focusing on battles overseas, this story remains here in the states, where men and women played crucial roles on the homefront. Gene is a sergeant at Fort Knox, struggling with a hectic job and a frustrating roommate. He finally gives in to his fellow officers and joins them for a night at the local USO.
That fateful night changes his life forever. There he meets Vivian, just an ordinary bank teller who volunteered as a junior hostess thanks to her friend's insistence. The job of a junior hostess was to make the men in uniform feel welcome and take away some of their burdens with dancing and friendly company. No alcohol or romantic dalliances allowed. Easier said than done when she meets Gene and an instant spark ignites a flame. Throughout their growing relationship, the two of them learn important (and surprising) things about each other and themselves.
What I loved most about this story was the history. The author clearly did her research and brought WWII Kentuckiana to life on the page. I live in this area myself, but I learned a lot I'd never known before. Some of the twists and turns were a little complex, which was a little hard to keep up with when I was reading late at night.
But overall, it's a great, clean read with a sweet romance set in a time and place that will appeal to American history buffs and historical romance lovers. Grab a copy of this first book in the Soldiers of Swing series. You'll love it.
MANY GREAT TWISTS AND TURNS THAT I DID NOT SEE COMING! I was surprised at every single major event throughout this book. It is such a sweet read. Like her other books, I can envision myself there and feel their emotions. Linda is very talented. This book flowed so smoothly, and kept my interests until the very last page. Definitely have to add this to my book collection one day. I read it on ebook. For those of you who have read the story of Vic and Louise I did not think that Linda could compete with them, but I have to admit, I loved this one just as much. This is the love story of Vivian and Eugene, aka, Gene. Every couple I have known encounters obstacles in their relationship, however one obstacle nearly breaks their union, and future relationship before it truly can begin! In the synopsis it tells you that you can expect something to happen, but I was completely shocked, and LOVED THE ENDING! Amazing Linda. I am looking forward to book 2.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I just finished reading this, the newest book by Linda Ellen. I really enjoyed everything about this book. My only disappointment is that the next book in the series isn't out yet! There was everything you would want in a great book; romance, mystery, struggling characters and a very happy ending. I'm now going to start reading, "Once In A While" if it's anything like this book, I know I'll love it!
Eugene/Gene- Sgt. In the Army at fort Knox . Vivian/Viv- worker at a bank, and through a friend became a junior hostesses at the local uso club. I enjoyed reading this captivating story that is fantastically written with military historical accuracy. Loved the plot and the surprise's/drama in the story. Their story has a sweet romantic HEA ! I'm looking forward to read the rest of the series!
As usual, Linda Ellen has turned out another superb book. I love the way Linda writes, incorporating facts and history into the story, making it all the more real to the reader. She allows the reader to step into the book and live with the characters, feel what they feel and experience what they experience. As a reader, I tend to stick predominantly to historical western (1800s) books, but every now and then I try to branch out and read other subgenres. One thing I love about Linda's books is the fact that I never have to worry about whether it will be good or not, I know for a fact that it will. :)
I adored the World War Two setting, and was immediately drawn into Gene and Viv's story, and followed them through every up and down, and the twists and turns (and boy are there a few twists! You don't want to miss them!) This story is very unique and original, the first of its kind as far as my reader knowledge goes (though I can't name the reason without giving away an important twist
Another wonderful story set during the 1940s. I've grown to love stories that also teach me so much about this time in history. Vivian...a precious story about her and her USO fellow she was destined to be with. Can't wait for the book 2!
Historical novels are not usually my genre… but I can’t say enough about this wonderful series!
Gene and Vivian meet quite by chance–or do they? Do you believe in love at first sight? Well, this story might not be just that, but… oh, dear. I can’t say much more without giving away too much. I can tell you that the characters are colorful, interesting, and unforgettable. And the confusing mysteries will most likely be unexpected, too. Just read it and see…
if you enjoy exciting romance, you’ll love this series. Especially since they’re clean reads!
Hurry! Run and pick up a copy of Her Blue-Eyed Sergeant and read the adventures of Gene and Vivian. Then read the rest of the series, too.
I'm not normally one to read romances, let alone clean romances (I must admit this was my first time ever encountering the term), so I didn't really know what to expect when I started on reading this book. And I have to admit, despite my initial misgivings, I actually had a wonderful time getting caught up in the romance and drama of Gene and Viv. This was the perfect book to read on a sunny day with a glass of ice cold lemonade. It had me dreaming of soldiers, tapping my toes, and imagining the night that my grandmother met my grandfather at a servicemen's ball.
Christian Historical Romance Lots of unexpected surprises in this sweet war time romance. Even though this story takes place stateside, you definitely get the military experience as he interacts with his supervisors, coworkers, and the various military members attending the USO. You even get a tour of the famous Fort Knox! I loved the Christian aspects of this story as they honored God with praise and cried out to Him in prayer! I'm looking forward to book two!
Interesting story about a hostess at USO club who meets a soldier and although it is against the rules she gets involved with him. Unexpected twist at the end.
