BT Urruela was an infantryman in the US Army from August 2004 until February 2011. At the end of a year long tour to Baghdad, Iraq, his vehicle was hit by two roadside bombs, which took his right leg below the knee and the life of his commander. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his wounds, an Army Commendation Medal, and Combat Infantryman's Badge. He medically retired from the Army in 2011 and moved to Tampa, FL where he currently works as a Director and Brand Ambassador for VETSports, a veteran community sports nonprofit he co-founded in 2012. He also conducts motivational speeches, works as a cover and fitness model and he's a personal performance trainer. He's a co-author of the military romance novel A Lover's Lament and the upcoming romantic thriller and his debut solo novel, Into the Nothing.
Into the Blood was an amazing follow-up novel to Into the Nothing! It's hard to compare the two, as they both seem to represent opposite sides of the romance spectrum. Where one book is more centered around the building of certain romantic relationships, with small parts of violence and danger, the other book has mostly solidified those relationships, and focuses more on the detailed lives of the characters...the regrettable decisions made, the reprehensible behavior of others, and the daunting actions that are taken to protect the ones they love.
This story was very intriguing. It made me think about the endless amount of "what ifs". It also broke my heart to read about the dire situations the characters found themselves in; how cruel and despicable people can be, with no care for others. But it also displays the unconditional love and support people can have. How no matter what situation that is presented, the people you love will always be there for you. Hope was always present, even though at times when it seemed impossible to see...it was there.
Into the Blood isn't your typical romance. It contains subjects that will make you cringe, and feelings that will make you cry. But beneath the awful and appalling circumstances, there's love...undying and never ending love. If you've read Into the Nothing, then don't pass up Into the Blood. All the questions you were left with will be answered...and more. You won't regret it!
5 Stars!

Though Into The Blood is marketed as contemporary romance, I found this book to be so much more than that. A continuation of Into The Nothing, in this, the second book in the series, we see Xander travel away from Truman Valley to the small town of Trinity in search of his long lost sister. As an army veteran who was treated with contempt for a situation that wasn't her fault, Gabi has found it difficult to reintegrate into society and has gotten herself messed up with the drug scene. Xander will do anything to help his sister- including break the law.
BT has taken this instalment down an even darker path than the first and it is riveting. You find yourself getting lost in the story. The characters are complex and imperfect. They are crazy and messed up and also can be funny as hell at times.
The book explores some hard issues, such as PTSD, life after the military and abuse and does so in a way that only someone who has been through these things could write about. This was another 5 star read from this author, for me. He really knows how to capture his audience.
After reading the phenomenal first book 'Into The Nothing ' I was beyond excited to get my hands on 'Into The Blood' and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. BT has yet again knocked it out the part with the continuation of Xander and Paige's story. A story which has turned out to be an explosive and all consuming sequel. I was kept on the edge of my seat as Xander embarks on a journey to help his long lost sister Gabi out of trouble as well as trying to be there for Paige as she comes to terms with her fathers death. But with the reality of just how much trouble Gabi is in, it's up to Xander, Shane, Irish and Rock to come together and pull off the most daring act to save her.
I really did love this book. The plot flowed perfectly, the characters were very well developed and everything was thought out.
This is a direct continuation of Into The Nothing so you do need to read that first, but I will tell you, you will not be disappointed.
I've said it once but I'll say it again...keep writing the way your writing..producing the amazing stories and character your producing and you will quickly rise in the book world. You are proving just how talented you are, BT and I seriously cannot wait to see you thrive.
"As much as I want to quit right now, as much as that seems like the best way to ease this pain, I know I was put on this earth fro you, and you were put on this earth for me. I'll never give up on you because I know you'd never give up on me. We're forever."
This book is book two in the series, I'm not sure if this could be read as a stand-alone. There maybe triggers for this book. Heavy drinking, some drug use, along with flashbacks and mentions of forced situations. I was hoping with how the writing flowed at the ending of book one that this book would be so much better than it was. Unfortunately this book just didn't do it for me. It was hard to keep pushing myself to finish. The characters from book one, they carry over into this book along with Gabi and Shane. Gabi is Xander's brother from book one. She's got herself into quite the bind. She's running drugs for a very dangerous man and ends up losing a shipment. Thus starts the plot for this book. Along with Xander working up the nerve to tell her that he's the long lost brother. Unfortunately, neither plot was strong enough to carry the book through the 150 page length. There was lots and lots of filler. Drinking for breakfast, drinking for lunch, drinking for supper and snacks between was a coke or weed filler. This could of been a great sub plot with the after thought of war. All the drinking and drugs by every character, every day. Doing this to cope, to get by and forget. Instead it was just thrown in there with pages upon pages of beer, shots, Bailey for breakfast, more beer, a Bloody Mary, and more shots. The characters, good things they had tag lines. You couldn't tell them apart. Well except for Paige, 38 times tears fell, and probably 32 of them were hers. Even with the small amount of parts and time she had, could of made her into something more, but she cried over everything. The rest of the characters, they all sounded EXACTLY alike. Even to the part that none of them barely ever cursed in their inner monologue, but as soon as they spoke, sounded like a clan of truckers. Even the girls calling each other babe and baby, then I had to look at the tag to see who was speaking.
Even the intimate and hot times that were in here. There are times when a male writer can make them so much more hot and intimate. Unfortunately that didn't happen either. It was just stiff and awkward reading to me.
After reading these parts here, I really had to force myself to keep reading:
* “Now, I’d baste that butthole and eat it for Thanksgiving dinner,” * “There’s so much dick in here I feel like I’m hanging out in Kim Kardashian’s asshole. And this one... Really, I'm not a prude and I love dark books with all that grit and gore, but what is up with the "Butthole" fascination? And what have the little people done to you?? * “Y’all ever seen midgets run track?” * “I had a cousin who *ucked a midget once. Said that shit was tighter than an Amish sheep’s asshole, but her heels kept banging into his stomach like a duckin’ drum. Bruised him up real good.” * Shit always works out. Love ya, No homo,” he says, followed by a light laugh. “I love ya too, bro. All kinds of homo.”
--Also a man can NEVER be blonde, but he can be blond. From book. * He sports a crooked smile, pulling at a spotty blonde beard
Also ellipses, if you're going to use more than a few, keeping them the same way helps. Some are started at the end of the word... And others are spaced being ...the next. Being consistent is key.
And at the ending. Xander ends up tied and a bag over his head. Either the author or editor forgot because Xander is looking at everything around him and his long lost friend in the eye. There's just so many little plot holes and things like this.
Apparently I'm in the minority here, with the hundreds of other readers but I think I'm done with this series. If you pick this up, I hope you enjoy it.
Xander Evans and Paige Watson are given little time to breathe once he’s released from jail. Xander’s need to establish a relationship with his long-lost sister, Gabriela Michael’s is pushed to the forefront of his priorities when he receives word that she is in trouble. Gabi’s in deep with a drug lord and she’s only got a month to figure her way out of the situation. Xander leaves Paige to dig deeper into the situation Gabi’s submersed herself in after her release from the military. In the end, Xander, Paige, Gabi, and a whole host of familiar and new faces work together to strengthen lost bonds and revolt against the evil drug lord organized in a bonded team of broken outlaws.
BT Urruela’s second installment, Into the Blood, of the Broken Outlaw series truly develops through deep rooted characterization and a richness of several key literary elements. Urruela connects Xander, Gabi, and Paige through parallels with loss, isolation, desperation, and survival mixed with segments of each of their life experiences. The new relationship forged develops through the underlying motif of survival and the human desire to seek a higher road. Urruela’s talent lies in his ability developing a multitude of characters with crafty dialects, depth of persona, and intense emotional connections. To his credit, Urruela seats his talent in character development. Xander is the ultimate caregiver. Eventually, he breathes life into the hearts of Paige, Gabi, Shane, Irish, Brandi, Rock, and Jimmy. He maneuvers the reader through each person with ease and keeps building each of their personas beautifully. The true talent is in his ability to make it easy for the audience to track each character in a seamless manner. These are only the protagonists, he manages to host the antagonists in the same artistic style creating the push and pull between the evils of the world and those who choose to right the wrongs.
One of the major underlying themes wrapped around his series deals with the isolated emotions and conditions surrounding those who have served the country, but it also applies here with those who have been incarcerated as well. This unwillingness for society to welcome back the heroes and the innocent is an all too familiar setting. Urruela also tackles the major issues of PTSD and all the facets associated with its infiltration into the human condition and the multitude of coping mechanisms, healthy or not, associated with the recurring motif of survival.
Without unleashing too much from the meat of the story, his deep-seated messages dealing with a return to civilian life, abuse, suicide, and making one’s way out of a bad situation continue to build in the series. The Broken Outlaw series is a mixture of suspense, romance, heartbreak, and hope. The intricate plot twists and hidden Easter eggs are a true testament of the talents gifted in Urruela’s prose. This is a series worth pushing up the sleeves and diving deep into the lives of the Broken Outlaws.
Flawless! Can Xander protect his sister, Gabriela? Can he help pull her out of her troubled life and keep her safe? Can Paige find the strength to support him and the only family he has left?
Will Shane be able to hold onto his love for Gabriela or will she finally push him away? Old friends return to help fight the fight but what will the end result be? Who will survive and at what cost?
New friendships are created and the comedy surrounding a special bartender had me laughing out loud. Will Jimmy's petulance for comedy be a cover for a more clever man? Will there ever be closure?
BT's words blow my mind. His writing style, descriptive details and surprisingly not so pretty storyline is perfect. Was I shocked by some of it, YES! Did it warrant several WTF moments, absolutely. But that's what sets him apart. He's not a cookie cutter author. Into the Blood has an epilogue and of course it was stellar. But, naturally, BT left me hanging. I need more and I want it now!
This series is definitely NOT my normal Harlequin style and that's what makes it so incredible. Add a playlist that will make you smile, action, comedy and some romance and you have the makings of an outstanding book. A must read!
Xander Evans is free. He is back with the love of his life Paige Watson. His life is pretty dang perfect. Expect he needs to connect with his long lost sister, Gabriela Michaels. Xander knows that Gabi is in trouble. His friend, Irish kept track for him, so he heads to Trinity, Wyoming.
Gabi doesn't know Xander is her brother and she can't really worry about it because she has bigger problems. She owes money---A LOT of money to the local drug dealer and she is running out of time to pay it back. Xander is willing to do whatever is necessary to help his sister including possibly going back to prison.
This is the second installment in the Broken Outlaw series and BT knocked it out of the park. The characters in this book are everyday people and I mean that in the best way. BT wrote this in such a way that I was literally talking out loud to the book and saying things, like "oh crap oh crap, I hope this works". It took me two days to read because I FORCED myself to put it down so I could sleep. The story grabs you like that first drop of a roller coaster and you are flying through the story and the next thing you know it is over and you are like, I WANT TO DO THAT AGAIN!!!
I knew when heads started to roll in Into the Nothing, that I needed to continue my journey with Xander. I am so glad I did.
Gabriela; I love a chick that can handle herself. She can talk the talk and walk the walk. Life has really put her through the wringer, but she can still be a total badass. I did want to know a bit more about her past and the situation that drove her out of the military she loved. I guess I am still hoping for some revenge on that front.
Gabi has other demons in her life that are not going away quietly. She will need reinforcements. Some she never knew she had, one that has always been by her side and even one that was unexpected. It made for quite the crew. They were going to win or die trying. I really liked that I got a bit of everything. There was a love story, but beneath that was a group willing to do anything for their "family" and the suspense kept me going, making for a quick read because I seemed to plow right through the pages waiting for "it" to hit the fan. Oh and it did. What a ride.
What a follow up book to into the Nothing! BT Urruela delivers once again! The introduction of the firerey sister of Xander. Gabi is very realistic of so many of my fellow female veterans. The development of the growing group makes you long to see where the next book will take you. Parts of this book were hard for me to read given my own life experiences, however, it was beautifully written. I am eagerly waiting for Into the Gallows!!
This picks up right where Into the Nothing left off. YOU HAVE TO READ THE FIRST ONE BEFORE THIS!!!! Xander is off to find his long lost sister and does some really dumb things when he gets there. There were a few times I just wanted to shake him. He and Paige have come a long way and things are good between them.
This wasn't only Paige and Xander's story. Gabi, Xander's sister, has a whole boat load of stuff going on with her and she's got Shane, who loves her whole heartedly and is there for her.
This had LOTS of action in it and I loved that :) Gabi was a little rough around the edges, but I can see why she'd be that way. Shane was perfect ;)
*thanks to BT for sharing a copy of this with me *
I choose 5 stars on this book, because I couldn't stop reading. My impatience for its release may have had something to do with it as well. After completing book one, I couldn't wait to find out what happens next and where the characters would go. Great character development, gritty details, made this a page turner. Looking forward now to the next in this series Into the Gallows. Seeing more depth, growth, and imagination in this story. I like where your going with this series, keep up the good work!!!!
I read this book in one sitting which I have never done before. The story pulls you in and does not let you go. There are no slow spots or places that drag. Every bit developes the characters and moves the story along. His characters are a tight knit bunch who will do anything for each other. You love them, you cry for them and you root for them. BT Urruela has really hit his stride with this book!
You have outdone yourself Mr. Urruela. Yes it's 3am and I just finished. So damn good. Gabi...my God strong don't even come close to describing her. Her and Shane are awesome but the whole crew is bad a$$ for sure. Jimmy might be a fave...he's a funny dude!!! Can't wait for book 3 I need more from this cast of characters.
Another awesome story. Loved that it continued to tell Xander and Paige's story while introducing us to Gabriela and Shane. Loved getting to know all the other characters as well. Could put it down. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
Absolutely Amazing This book is just as good if not better then the first one. I couldn't put it down. B.T. is amazing I can't wait to see what happens next.
This book hits the ground running as Xander tries to reconnect with his long lost sister, Gabriela, and help get her out of the trouble she's gotten into.
Into the Blood by BT Urruela is the second book in the Broken Outlaws series. Zander has released from prison for the crime he didn’t commit. Reunited with Paige, he once again sets his sights on finding his sister that he hasn’t seen since she was two. His friend has been keeping an eye on her while Zander was locked-up but has bad news for Zander. She is into some bad stuff with very bad people. Zander kisses Paige good-bye and heads-out. Zander unexpectedly meets his sister before he planned and scared of the outcome, he introduces himself as a friend of a friend of her “best” friend (although he wants to be more) Shane. Shane has been in love with Gabi for years and although he has pressed for more, she keeps him at an arm’s length. Gabi has unfortunately made her dealer angry so he kidnaps her for ransom to cover the money she still owes him. Shane, Zander, Paige and with a little help from their other friends, set out to try and raise the money and save Zander’s sister, who he just met.
Into the Blood had a steady pace of action and suspense. The book keep me guessing on what direction is was going to go. Into the Blood deals with a lot more serious issues that Into the Nothing did. This story focused more on the team working together to save Gabi. Now, let me talk about bartender Jimmy….I think he stole the book. He was funny, crazy, and unexpected. Read this book if not for the story of an nontraditional family banded together to save one of their own but for the fact that Jimmy was absolutely hilarious, and sometimes, not even meaning to be.
Wow – this was an intense read! Into the Blood picks up where Into the Nothing ends so if you haven’t read that one first I would definitely suggest you do. Xander is on his way to find and hopefully help his sister Gabriela who’s found herself if some serious trouble. This book is a bit darker and tackles some very serious issues, but it’s powerful!
Gabi has a rough time since leaving the army, which she did after a horrific experience. She’s pretty broken and even with her best friend Shane at her side always showing he loves her, she doesn’t feel like she can ever love anyone back. And now she’s in some serious trouble after a drug deal gone wrong, and it’s about that time Xander shows up ready and willing to help her no matter what it means. Along with Xander, Paige, Brandi and Irish are all there too.
There is a lot going on in this book and I don’t want to spoil the story or the action, but will say it's intense and there's love and even humor too. This was not an easy read and again there are some serious issues these characters face but it’s raw and it’s real. BT Urruela really has a great job with these characters, flaws and all. I had a hard time warming up to Gabi in the beginning but it honestly didn’t take away from her and Shane’s incredibly journey.
I am definitely a big fan of this series, all the real and the raw mixed in with the tender and loving. This is a story and group of characters you don’t want to miss.
I volunteered to read a copy of this book. I did not receive any form of payment for this review. This is my thoughts and only my thoughts on this book.
This is book 2 in the Broken Outlaw Series. You do need to read book one Into the Nothing before reading this one.
I loved this book just as much as I did the first one. I read this book in two sittings, only because I had other commitments to family or I would never have put this down until I finished it. I didn't want this book to end. I love all of the characters! Main and secondary they are all very important to the story.
Xander is still one of my favorite characters of all time. He is fiercely loyal to those he loves. This story is about him finding his sister and he will do whatever is needed to protect her along with Paige. His love never falters.
I look forward to reading many more books by BT. He is truly and inspiration and I wish him much success in all his endeavors.
Talk about jumping from the frying pan and into the fire...
A very touching story about survival. Violence, some ruthless, and brotherhood, with a like passion take you on a wild journey. One I enjoyed reading about, but wouldn't want to live through. Paige and Xander's story continues while Gabi's story is just getting started. And now a bit about the story...
How do you walk up to a complete stranger (at least from her vantage) and tell her you are the long lost brother she didn't know she had? Well if you are Xander, you pretend to be someone else. As Gabi befriends the friend of a former special forces soldier, something seems off. But as the truth comes out, the story just gets harder... how to free Gabi from her past.
Favorite passage: Any combat veteran’s struggle should be met with immediate and effective resolve. Her downfall is indicative of exactly what’s wrong with the system.
Into the Blood starts with a recapping of the pain at the end of the first book, Into the Nothing. I was instantly reminded of all the darkness that Xander had already had to overcome. And even still he has tough choices to make. Gabi was rough around the edges for sure and with such a dark past to overcome. There was a definite fire burning within her. I enjoyed observing what she and Shane had. There was an easiness to their relationship and an evident need that they both fulfilled with one another. This book started out intensely with Gabi right behind the eight ball. The fast pace of the story and my need to know what would happen next made this book very difficult to put down. I spent several of the last few chapters hovering on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed this action-packed book and highly recommend this series.
I'm not sure where to begin. I don't like giving reviews that give the book away. I want the reader to be lead on their own journey.
Xander after getting out of prison makes his way back to Paige and her life as it is now. However, upon his return home he finds out from Irish his sister Gabi is in bad trouble. So he goes with Paige's blessing to see if he can help her.
Things are worse than he realizes and he meets Shane, Rock, and the crazy bar owner Jimmy. Once Irish, Brandi, and Paige join them they come up with a plan to get Gabi free of the burden she has.
The most anticipated sequel to Into The Nothing (Broken Outlaw Series) is nothing short of action packed, nail biting, page turning novel. We continue the story of Xander & Paige with the introduction of Gabriela and the Band of Broken Outlaws. I have fallen in love all over again with Xander & Paige. I love the introduction of all the other characters, they share a bond that is definitely unbreakable. BT Urruela has outdone himself with another phenomenal novel that is definitely movie worthy!!
What a wild ride! The author can certainly hold your attention with drama, love, secrets, family loyalty, excitement, etc. This book has it all and I wish there were more to follow. I fell in love with Xander in Into the Nothing and felt his pain. So glad that things worked out for him and Paige. Gabriela's story kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. So much love, friendship and loyalty in one book is wonderful. God has truly blessed B.T. Urreula with the unique gift of words.
The second of the Outlaw Series was just as wonderful as the first book. We learn so much more about Xander and now his sister Gabi...and although there are truly some disturbing issues mentioned...it was really dealt with nicely. The influx of new characters was fun and I can't wait to see what BT Urruela has for us in the next installment of this series!
