This is one of the books we had in our home library that my mother had acquired in the 1940's when it was first published. Growing up with music I played the piano and other musical instruments. This is one of the first books that I read about the history of music, its forms, composers, and specific works. While there has been more scholarship in the half-century since I read this book it is still a welcome reference for classical music.

Very dated, but then so is some of the music addressed in the essays.
