A mystic lyricism and precise imagery often marked verse of German poet Rainer Maria Rilke, whose collections profoundly influenced 20th-century German literature and include The Book of Hours (1905) and The Duino Elegies (1923).
People consider him of the greatest 20th century users of the language.
His haunting images tend to focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety — themes that tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist poets.
I've made Rilke a part of my life now; after being so impacted by his 'Letters to a Young Poet', I decided to dive deeper into his actual poetry, going chronologically from 'Larenopfer' now to 'Traumgekrönt', or 'Dream-Crowned'. It's a work that dives very deeply into themes of dreams and love, primarily consisting of two parts called "Dreaming" and "Loving", both of which absolutely shook me to my core. I knew that Rilke was going to improve in his poetry after his early works, the aforementioned 'Larenopfer' was great but not quite as impressive as one may expect from a poet that people consider one of the best in the German language, but this short collection absolutely floored me.
He still uses the very impressionistic style of description to give his readers a picturesque impression of nature and emotions, but there's such a deep-dwelling layer of beautiful expression that I find incomparable to other poets in any language. His poems are unbelievably rich in atmosphere, but this time he uses that atmosphere to offer a lot of substance despite the overwhelming melancholia that accompanies them. Especially the last few poems of the "Loving" section are some of his best at this point in his career, and honestly, it's hard to comprehend how he's supposedly supposed to become even better very soon. I cannot wait for what he has to offer next.
