All the holiday specials

More random Rin Kagamine coming at you as we explore the processes of her releasing albums, celebrating a variety of holidays, and other little things she and her manager deal with from day to day as they coexist in the same living space. All in all pretty basic slice of life stuff with the exception of Rin being a Vocaloid so she is a sentient robot of sorts so you never know what to expect.

The singular star this is getting is because of the fact that the art in this was cute, otherwise I'm....? Eugh, okay, simply put: I saw this at a bookfair, saw Rin on the cover, read the blurb on the back (which mentions nothing about the Manager character) and bought it thinking oh wow, vocaloid manga? That'll be fun, won't it? Well, ehm. 😦.

Apparently not!

My biggest problem with this was, in fact, the manager and the Manager alone! Simply put: I've never seen a drier character in existence. He's SO DRY that he isn't even drawn with eyes! That's how insignificant he is. My haterism stems purely from the fact that this guy... is a such a bore. Like I'm aware that he's meant to be a sort of self-insert, but should that mean that the guy you see IN ALMOST EVERY. OTHER. PANEL should be drier than the sahara itself? Like, surely you'd want SOME character for them? No??? I'm aware it's a bit of a trope thing with some manga, but it won't fail to piss me off any less!

Also, I really hope to God that this Manager is not meant to be a romantic interest for Rin, or at the very least, he's the same age as Rin. Why, you ask? BECAUSE RIN IS 14! IT'S MENTIONED ON LIKE... 5 SEPARATE OCCASIONS! Because of this uncertainty, some parts of the manga simply made me uncomfortable... instead of making my blood boil (mind you, I'd rather take the latter over the former.) Luckily he wasn't a creep. Otherwise, I would've self-defenestrated.

Overall, I think it was kind of wasted potential :') !!! Trust me, I'm not looking for stellar writing or anything. Even trashy things can be enjoyable. My main problem... with everything was the Manager. I don't have anything against well-written self-inserts, but man, did he make everything a bore to get through. The fact that you have to see him on almost every other page just worsens the problem. Simply replacing him with another vocaloid character (e.g, Miku) would've made this less awkward and frankly more enjoyable to go through. The more sad fact is that I think the gimmick they had for this was actually pretty neat? Like, reading through tweets from fans and illustrating them as fun little stories is actually cute. Maybe it just goes to show how one singular dry character who appears far too frequently can make a story oh-so unenjoyable.

Alas, I feel like I've been too harsh, and I would like to say a few nice things even though I'm severely disappointed and even a little concerned. The art style for this was absolutely adorable! It was really nice to look. I enjoyed the panelling. It was really pleasing to look at. The expressions were really lovely too. I liked some of the 'low res' ones. Lastly, seeing cameos from the other vocaloids was nice too. Like even if I had to see the Manager every other page, a saving grace was looking to the following panel and going, "Oh, Miku!" But yeah, that's pretty much it.

Would I recommend this...? Honestly, probably not unless you're into self insert stuff. Will I be rereading it? Probably not. It'll most likely just sit untouched, gathering dust. A real shame, honestly, the art style was pretty sweet.

I learned a valuable lesson today: don't black out when you see one of your faves and read the blurb thinking, oh, that seems cool! Do a little more research. It won't hurt, really.

Apologies for my harshness, I just had higher hopes for this 😔

This manga fails to deliver a good story. It even fails to make Rin-chan a likeable character.

Fortunately, I do not have volume 4.
