Phew! That was heavy material to read in one session!! .. some parts left me in a WTH mood .. some parts left me with heart shape eyes and a sigh .. other parts just scare the shit out of me XD
.
This novel is about 21 year Amber who have just moved from England to Ohio after attempting sucide to live with her father. She met Will , and he became her love interest.
Amber who left UK with more than the wounds from her failed attempts to end her life is trying to get better than ever . After living with an abusing boyfriend she's a shell and this new life is her 2nd chance to be the person she always wanted to be .
Will , 25 everything man lol seriously he is : a father figure for his adorable lil sis , a good friend to Amber's dad , and more than a lover to our beloved heroine.. is the super man of the story.
Its nice and refreshing to read a romance that doesn't only focus on the love between the couple and While I enjoyed reading it ,Some parts were a shock and it was really hard to read such a thing .. i really really hope i never read something sad like this again or hear anybody live thro such a pain .
I felt sometimes the wheel of events is rolling too fast .. like the insta hate , sudden interest & Sudden trust , sudden fightings then the sudden makeups between Amber and Will / Amber and her best friend . How Amber were reacting toward Will after what happened to her .. I had a bad break up once upon a time not a bad relationship as her and after what happened to me I had real trust issues sooo yeah I didn't understand that .
I wont write any spoilers but what happened by the end was like the author have so many ideas and kept them for those last chapters .. they are good ideas but all of them happening this fast and at the same time was just too much :)
.
If you are into thriller romance with a touch of mystery & humor.. this is your book ;)

What does one do with the biggest mistakes ever? Run. From Britain all the way to Ohio. Amber's mistake is called Tommy or perhaps, Sneaky Tommy. She was fooled by him into thinking that he cared for her, but all she really received was abuse.

Amber was pleased when Tommy exhibited so much warmth and caring, that is until he cuts her off from her friends and ensures that she is completely dependent upon him. When her mother lay dying, he consoles her. Until one day, in anger, he tightens his hands around her neck, leaving bruises. Another day, it was bruises on her arms, another it was bruises on her legs. His physical abuse continues to grow. Slowly, he erodes what confidence she had, until Tommy absorbs her life, right down to her mother's house and her mother's money.

While Tommy takes over her life, she is overwhelmed by panic attacks and depression. Her mother's death left her emotionally adrift and, with the aid of his abuse, she drifts right into a mental hospital. As Tommy explains to the doctor that Amber is ready to come home, she panics at the prospect of returning to him where he can continue to terrify her. She grabs a pair of scissors in desperation and cuts her arms open in front of the doctors and nurses. Needless to say, she is relieved when she is not released into his open arms.

She is filled with hope when she awakes to find her father has come to Britain to bring her home to Ohio. Tommy makes all sorts of excuses as to why she should stay and how he will take good care of her. Although she doesn't know her father, she knows he has to be a safer bet than Tommy. Going back with her father means being committed to a treatment center, but she is more than willing to do what it takes to escape Tommy's hands.

Finally, freed in Ohio, she meets Will who is raising his little sister Cody. Is it love, lust, like, dislike? It's hard for her to decide. Will is certainly an attractive guy, but he is a bit pushy and Amber simply wants to find herself. He just can't seem to leave her alone, though. Unknown to her, she is like a magnet for Will and he's not going to rest until he gets to know her as more than just the next-door neighbor.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. Has she escaped Tommy? Is she in love with Will? Is the neighbor across the street a pervert? Is Cody a matchmaker? There is a lot going on in this book to keep you wondering.

The book is very well-written, entertaining, and even suspenseful. The only time I didn't care for the story was when Amber allowed Tommy to take away her inheritance. For the most part, I found the secondary characters to be interesting and a great addition for the story. I definitely didn't think of this as a normal romance; there is so much more going on. However, there is sexual interest and you know that one of the goals is reaching the bedroom. Fortunately, it did not overwhelm the storyline, which was a pleasant aspect. I recommend this book to readers who like more than just a typical romance.

For the rating:

Genre and general reading age - Contemporary romance for adults and older teens.
Level of sexuality - There are a few sex scenes that are rather low-key for the most part.
Is there graphic language? Yes
Did I cry? No
Did I laugh? Yes, I actually did.
Is this part of a series? No.
Level of character development - The main characters were solid and several of the other characters matured nicely over the course of the story.

I gladly give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars.

Mistakes of My Past: Escape is just the beginning by Emily James
4 stars!!!

“If I am going to die, I won't do it afraid of him.”

Mistakes of My Past is the debut book by author Emily James. This has a little of that romantic suspense vibe running through it but overall, is a book about fresh starts, recovering from the past and looking forward to the future, a future you never deemed possible.

Amber was living in the UK with her mum, her Dad was working and living in the US and since he moved out there their relationship had been strained and he had become an absentee parent. Since her mum died, Amber has been on a downward spiral, culminating in a suicide attempt. Having lost her mum and finding herself in an abusive relationship, everything got too much and not living seemed her only option.

“…open your eyes, you have to snap out of this.” I have snapped, just like you promised me I would.”

Amber’s Dad flies over from the States and seeing an out, away from life, the UK and her abusive partner, Tommy, Amber grabs the opportunity with both hands and soon finds herself in a psych hospital in the US but it seems Tommy’s reign of terror is far from over.

“Honey, I’d cross the whole world every day if you needed me. I thank God I still have you.”

Will lives next door to Amber’s dad and he and his sister have been looked after by him since their parents died. Will was the salt of the earth, had a heart the size of Texas and lived and breathe for his little seven-year-old sister. Will takes an instant like to Amber and although it was reciprocated neither of these two were really accepting of what was happening between them. Time heals all wounds, but some take more time than others.

“I love everything about you. You make me feel like I have something worth fighting for.”

Emily James delivers an emotional read and this book may contain triggers for some. While some of this book tackles some hard subjects, Emily James delivered it with empathy and realism. At no time did I not feel something towards Amber, her situation in the UK was the kind that serial killer films were based on and Tommy was definitely on a total different level of crazy.

Amber had been worn down mentally over a long period, had endured terrible things at the hands of Tommy, all of which had somehow made it onto social media. Tommy manipulated how Emily’s friends saw her leading to labels that were neither true nor warranted. Tommy was scum on the scummiest of levels, a man born with a sense of entitlement and had no scruples when attaining what he wanted.

Amber’s growth from victim to a stronger confident woman was great to read about, it takes time and her propensity to trust is shot to hell. With the help of her best friend, Roxy, Will, Cody and her Dad, Amber works hard in bettering herself and it is this journey that cemented this as a really good read for me.

“I chose you the second I walked into that house and found a frightened little bird and watched her turn into a fearless eagle.”

For a debut book the author shows she has talent, yes, it is in its rawest form but this story held its own and had my attention from the very start. For me personally, I would have liked a little more emotion, typically a book like this would have me in floods of tears and while I had that empathy for Amber, she wasn’t a character that had burrowed herself into my heart. I was more an outsider looking in rather than living and breathing it with the characters.

This author will definitely stay on my radar and I cannot wait to see what comes next.

21-year-old Amber finds her life in turmoil and escapes to a fresh beginning. Her journey leads her to meets others struggling in various ways and slowly she begins to form relationships with them. Through many ups and downs, she slowly starts to feel like things are finally at peace when the past comes back knocking.
A well-written book indeed with many twists, surprises, and excitement that leaves you on edge waiting for what is to happen next.
I vastly enjoyed this book as it relates to a situation that can happen, and does happen in everyday life. I think this would be a great read for teenagers as well as adults and Emily James is a fantastic writer with a clever mind. I cannot wait to read more of her novels in the future.

beautifully invested 5 stars to this novel.

The story of this novel is divided into being utterly simple and yet leaving an impact on the reader after one is done reading it.

I cannot tag all the elements that makes a book fall into a category of 5 stars but definitely my point of view towards a 5 star book has changed a bit with this book.

It has so beautifully written characters with ease, simplicity, and yet they are poignant and have the malice and pungency to dent the darkest corners of your brain.

To readers, it is not an erotic story. Although it has some nice highlighted scenes of love making, the main focus of the story revolves around the mistakes of the past

about the characters;

Amber : her character is a coweb and a spider's web of the haunting that hurt her heart and soul. She is timid and apprehensive. She seeks a way out to escape nonetheless. The only secure place to run and hide from the monster of her past is the asylum. She is suicidal. She doesnt wanna live but she wants to live. she is tired. she wants peace. the journey for her till now has not been smooth and it wont be one either now. But what makes a difference is that she might or might not get a second chance this time. It is a suspsense for her depending on her courage to make better choices and may find someone who finally deserves her before all hell breaks loose again.

Will: he is the architect and lives with his younger sister, cody. He is a passionate simple guy next door. He is sorted out. He gives out the vibes of stability, trust, honesty, faith, love and all the shiny things to be grateful about in life. He is a strong man who has fallen for a girl complete opposite of him. Will Will get a chance to win over her even after he screws up? Will he be able to discover the unknown mysterious about her?

The questions are many and answers will only be answered when one reads the story with courage and hope in one's heart along with finger's crossed.

Also, it is a beautiful contrast of characters that the author, Emily James, was able to bring about in them. One is darkness and one is brightness. It is a metaphor. The story is satirical and teaches you many things about life, second chances, bravery, standing up for one self, or just letting it go.

I definitely and personally vouch for a movie adaptation to be made on it soon enough!!

Cheers and love,

Niki/ Romanceofilia

“Hey sweetheart, open your eyes, you have to snap out of this.” - Tommy
I have snapped, just like you promised me I would. - Amber

Amber seizes what she believes is her last opportunity to escape her boyfriend, Tommy. She's learned the hard way he isn't the man he portrayed himself to be. She's tried to leave him before, yet he always brings her back, charming others into believing his version of events. When her estranged Dad, Patrick, visits her in the hospital, she's shocked, but realizes his offer of her living with him in the US is her last chance. However, her Dad has one condition, and it's due to Amber's decision to perpetuate Tommy's claims of her mental issues, he insists she seeks help.

Amber accepts and takes the time to understand she's a victim and is ready to move forward. When she's discharges, Amber and her Dad slowly start rebuilding their relationship.

Will, Patrick's neighbor, is surprised to see Amber, his friend's daughter. Apparently she's finally decided to stop her selfish ways and spend time with her Dad. He believes she's just like his ex, Ashley, the one that betrayed him with someone he though he could trust. It doesn't take long though for Will to see he's wrong about Amber. Will can admit, after some wisdom from his little sister, Cody, that not every woman is like his lying, cheating ex.

Will and Amber slowly start building a friendship, wondering if more is possible, but each are wrestling with their own demons that may prevent them from acting upon their attraction. Both are worried they aren't enough, and in Amber's case, someone is determined to try and prove her insecurities are real as they want Will for their own.

Can Will and Amber trust one another? Can they recognize that not everyone behaves as their exes did? Will Tommy find Amber? Can Will keep her safe? Will Amber discover the courage to stand up for herself? Is there a HEA for Will and Amber?

One-click now and follow along as two people, both emotionally scarred due to an ex's behavior, form a friendship that gradually builds to be a love that can withstand anything.

On a personal note, I have to admit that at first I struggled to get into the book. It moved a little slowly in my opinion, but then it picked up. This is not a negative note of the author as I feel she is talented and liked the premise, as well as the main, and some secondary, characters. I encourage you to give this book a chance and feel you'll like it. Also, as an Ohioan and lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, I love that this is set in Ohio, an actual town here, and mentions my favorite team numerous times.

New Beginnings

What an awesome debut story for Emily James! This book is a roller-coaster of strong emotions, deals with some strong subject matter of abusive situations, but it's also full of love and laughter! This book uses British/UK spellings and references.
Will and Amber have both been hit in the party, top they date risk their great and trust again? Is it possible to actually find true love that won't hurt you or someone have ulterior noticed and actually just love you for who you are? Are Will and Amber able top find that kind of live with each other or are they destined to repeat the mistakes of their pasts? You'll have to read MISTAKES OF MY PAST to find out, but me oh my it'll be worth the read! I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book could have some #triggers for some readers. So just know there is some violence in it, and some subjects that may be too much for some.

21 year old Amber, flees England to be with the father that she has been estranged from. She wants to start fresh. The circumstances that put her in that situation is not a nice one.
She meets Will, her fathers next door neighbour, and well this is their story.

This is not a bad debut novel for this author. quite enjoyed it. The reason is stopped me giving it 5 stars is because there were some parts i just didn't connect with the story, and there could have been more feeling, maybe i will read it again to see how i feel the second time.

well done Ms James, definitely will be following your career to see what else you come up with :D

Good book. Good story line and characters. Will is raising his young sister after their parents die and Amber is dealing with the death of her mother and leaving an abusive relationship. Can they come together and be happy? I would recommend this book. No cliffhanger.

Wow!

Omg where do I begin? This was by far a truly amazing read! I was taken hook line n sinker into the world of this poor girl, Amber. I was crying, shouting and generally getting all emotional with every chapter. I cannot fault it at all, all I can say is I was blown away by how much one person can live through. Brilliant!

This is a brand new author for me and was not sure what to expect. I am very pleased with how well this is written. Amber takes drastic measures to get away from an abusive boyfriend and ends up befriending a neighbor, Will. She has to protect her new friends and herself from her now ex, who has her old house and all of her money, the only logical conclusion is to run. Can Will convince her that she is safer with him?

Emily has done a very good job of balancing a backstory with plot and drawing the reader into the story. Once I hit the halfway mark in the story, there was no way I could put it down! A very good read of a romance thriller!

5 stars for Mistakes of My Past: Escape is just the beginning by Emily James. This is my first book by this author and it will not be my last. I loved every page of this book. We have Amber who has lived a sheltered life, she was home schooled and then her boyfriend Tommy kept her away from everyone. He abused her for a long time, and she try to kill herself to get away from him. Her father shows up to and takes her to the U.S. This is where she goes to a rehab center and meets Roxy. Roxy is someone who is going to help Amber become a stronger women , she becomes a great friend to her. We also meet Will. Will is has been taking care of his sister since they lost their parents. He is a contractor working on Amber’s dads house. He is instantly attracted to her, but does not like the stories he has been told about her. These two have an attraction to each other but will they act on it. Amber does not know how to trust people , and Will never knows what women really want with him. What happens when Amber’s past comes to the present. This is a great book filled with love , some witty banter, and even a little suspense.

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

Mistakes of My Past: Escape is Just the Beginning was an extremely gripping debut novel by Emily James. Tommy showed all the classic abuse signs, and poor Amber was sucked right into the pattern. After the death of her mother, she leaves England for the US with her father. In the US she gets the help she needs, and makes friends. I loved watching her character transform, even though I yelled at her quite a bit too. This book had some of the best (and most amusing)supporting characters. I loved Roxy's lipstick messages. I was pulled right into their lives while I read. There was some humor, romance, and even suspense.. a lil bit of everything.

Mistakes Of My Past
By Emily James

Being a strong, confident woman is tough in this world. It's also a lot tougher when you're in a relationship where you are constantly being degraded and made to feel worthless. Being in a relationship like this is very hard to get out of, especially when you're made to believe that it is your fault.

"My voice is now raised and my eyes meet his. If I am going to die, I won't do it afraid of him."

Amber believed she had found "the one" with Tommy. He told her all the right things and made her feel special, mostly in front of others. But when they were alone, Tommy tore Amber down inch by inch, until she couldn't recover. When push comes to shove, Amber is forced to do the unthinkable and ends up in a hospital. Being taken away from all she knows, Amber tries to start fresh, with the help of her new neighbour Will. But will Amber's past come back to haunt her?

"Normal fears for a twenty-one-year-old girl are awakened in me and I know that I want this. I want normal and excited, and I want the butterfly’s that are creating a tornado in my belly.  I want to start living my life again. "

Mistakes of My Past was an intense read. Filled with serious, real-life scenarios, I found myself reading non-stop, with the hope that everything worked out for the MC. Emily James did a great job highlighting the truth about abuse in relationships, and helped show us that help is always there. If you find yourself in a similar situation, remember you are not alone. Reach out and talk to someone, take that first step in getting out of an abusive situation.

"There’s something liberating about finally putting your past behind you and looking toward a meaningful future that makes you feel as free as the birds that soar overhead and the fish that swim in the lake. "

** Review by Gayle from Bloggers From Down Under **

Her name is Amber.
She’s young and beautiful.
Living in England, Amber is happy.
She has her Mum, her Dad living in the States.
She has friends.
But more importantly she has Tommy, her boyfriend who happens to be Mr Popular.
Ambers life….Amazing.

But in a blink of an eye everything that Amber has ever known and loved is about to be torn from her.
Her mother….Gone.
Tommy….A monster.
The abuse, the pain, the sheer hurt is too much.
Amber needs to escape.
But how?
How can she leave him?
He’ll kill her if she doesn’t.
So Amber does the only thing she knows that will free her from her hell.
Take her own life.

But what starts as a bid to finally end it all actually ends up being a new beginning for Amber.
Moved from England to live with her father in the States, Amber has finally escaped Tommy.
She can finally heal.
She can finally breathe.
It’s time for Amber to find Amber again.

But she doesn’t expect him.
The next door neighbour.
All American guy who is sinfully delicious.
He’s strong, independent and has Amber in his sights.

His name….Will

Welcome to Amber and Wills world.
A world of heartache and pain.
A world of trust and hope.
A world of secrets.
A world of love.
Add to that a monster lurking in the shadows, an ex boyfriend with only revenge in his mind, a dog and a beautiful little girl, you have one hell of a read.

Guys….I cannot express enough how much I loved and adored this debut novel by Emily James.
I was completely gripped from the very first chapter, I couldn’t put it down.
It was raw, gritty and at times highly confronting.
It was heart-breaking and at times dark.
But it was also heartwarming and breathtakingly beautiful.
And the twists……Mind blowing.
It had everything and so much more.
A highly emotional read that quite frankly left me speechless.
I cannot rate this novel high enough. I congratulate Emily on a brilliant debut novel.
A read not to be missed.

5 stars.

This was one hell of a story. The characters were all so very well defined and the storyline was interesting, intriguing and very well written. Amber's story is heartbreaking as the story begins, as in the lengths that she has to go through to remove herself from the horrible situation she is in. Her character is weak, as it should be in the beginning, and trust is something that she doesn't have in abundance..for anyone. The story shows how she finally begins to change her life, with the help of her new best friend Roxy. She slowly begins to start living her life the way she wants and slowly, very slowly begins to let down her walls of mistrust and let neighbor, Will, in. Along with his little sister Cody, she begins a friendship that hopefully will turn in to so much more. I was afraid that considering she had taken all of those kick-boxing classes she would loose all of her newly found strength when confronted with her tormentor and was really surprised at the path that it took.

This was a really great book and I do highly recommend it. I think everyone will enjoy it.

I'm going to start with what may sound like a generic WOW!
I'm struggling to find a word to describe this. It's so cleverly written!

There's this totally cute guy named Will who just had me swooning. He's hilarious and so is his little sister who had me laughing out loud. A lot! They provide some light relief in what is a dark romance.
Will and Amber are made for each other but it takes a lot for Amber to let her guard down. She's been badly hurt in the past. Badly!
Their journey is full of twists and turns. There is a twist I did not see coming.

Mistakes of my past is a beautiful story of hurt, rehabilitation, finding yourself and ultimately love.
I loved it and couldn't put it down. It's the first book in ages that's had me completely gripped.

Quite an enjoyable read! Amber is running, running from a horrible past which includes a sadistic ex BF. What she never imagined after rehab was meeting another man, a man who is also quite smitten with her. Can Will tear down these walls around Amber's heart? Can he get her to share her past so they can have a future? Will she trust him to do as he says? Absolutely enjoyed this story. The characters were great, the supporting get characters will Crack you up. Lots of laughter, angst and love to be shared throughout the book. Go on, give it a one click!

If there's anything I really enjoy about NA (or really ANY thing) it's good character growth. From the beginning to the end we saw Amber do a lot of growing, both with her anxiety and emotionally. I'm not a giant fan of perspective switching but it works when done well. For a debut novel, Emily has done a great job at presenting herself to the literary world, and anyone interested in a little coming of age, a little bit of suspense, romantic tension, and the lot, definitely pick up this book.
