“I Still Do” is a charming story about an old romance that lasts a lifetime. Rosa Lee Jude weaves a sweet tale of Harry of Emily’s love as it transcends time, but for me it ended up being a slightly one-dimensional narrative that was marred by unadventurous writing.
While I enjoyed the overall story in the way one enjoys a cheesy rom-com, it generally felt like it just wasn’t enough. The plot, which centered around the romance, had a few other lines running parallel to the main story of Harry and Emily, but they weren’t really given the amount of depth they needed to make a really substantial, truly interesting work. For example, domestic violence plays a major role in the story, but on the whole, it was given only a surface treatment, and the perpetrator of the violence was, in my opinion, a shallowly conceived cliché.
I thought the other characters, on the contrary, were decently well-thought out and distinct, though the story did suffer from an “everyone is good but the villain” trope. Nevertheless, I didn’t feel disconnected from the characters or the plot on this account, and found them fairly enjoyable characters.
Sadly, where the story suffered the most for me was the plain writing. There was relatively little descriptive language, and the dialogue often came across as stilted and unnatural. I felt the characters in the “flashbacks” didn’t have a voice that suited the time period, and even in the “present day” chapters, characters never used contractions, which felt wrong. When portraying modern, American characters, it seems anachronistic and unnatural to say things such as “Do not mistake me”. Furthermore, long, rambling paragraphs, without breaks, that were filled with simple sentences, made this book somewhat dull to read at times.
As a result, sometimes I felt like I didn’t want to finish the book, but I pushed through. Luckily, I found the ending to be satisfying. I do wish the story had had more of the nuances and trademarks of the time period in which half of it had been written, but I think overall it was a pleasant read.
I’d recommend this book as a summer read; the kind of story you pick up for the beach but don’t take all too seriously. It’s not the kind of book that will resonate with you for months after finishing it, but as a romance and slice-of-life story it satisfies the soul of a casual reader.
There was not a boring sentence in this wonderful book. I loved every word of it and would recommend it to everyone. I was impressed by how many characters and rabbit trails it followed with no confusion. I understood each step. Many books are so confusing you can't follow the plot. Not this one. The author is brilliant and a fantastic writer. It was a beautiful love story intertwined with suspense, memories, love and hatred. I'm at a loss for words to explain the story as it was so full. It has a surprise ending I would never have guessed. Get the book. I know you'll love it.
I’m not quite sure why I read the whole book except it put me to sleep each night. It was such a WASPy story. Boy and girl fall in love. Girl's daddy disapproved of the boy because of his family. So, they go their separate ways without a word, and spoiler alert....are reunited 50 years later. There was no real depth to any of the characters. Imagine reading a 16 year old's diary or listening to a stranger's story of their first love as a teenager and, well, that's this book. Ho hum.
A very appropriate title. "Not every story has a happy ending." "What happens if the story isn't over?" These two thoughts underline the story for many reasons. This is a romantic novel aimed at sentimental women readers and will definitely touch the heart.
Who doesn't smile at the thoughts of their first true love? What a beautiful story of youth, true love and how life steps in when we least expect. This is truly one of those exceptional books you never want to end!
Oh! Where to begin......what a warm, loving story!!!! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Ending slipped up on me and made it even better. Would love to know folks like the leading characters. READ THIS BOOK! You will NOT be sorry.
