Some quotes on Hugo Huesca from those who know him:

"Are you rich yet?" A family member, one day after Hugo self-published his first short story ever. (The answer is no.)

"He's the devil." A College professor.

"What are you doing in my house? No, I'm not giving you a quote for your biography, please leave before I call the police." Some random person.

Bleh

Just another bland Mary Sue hero in a litrpg. I just finished the book and the only unique things I remember are some weird phrasings that came frequently enough to constantly kick my cognitive dissonance into fits.

Well written, I don't think I saw any spelling or grammar errors.

For the most part, barely a LitRPG. This isn't a negative though (well, unless you want a pure, hard LitRPG, then it would be;)) as it's a wonderful cyberpunk mystery thriller with some LitRPG and SciFi thrown in. Can't really say too much about the plot itself as it's hard to talk about without giving the mystery away.

Towards the end (the last 20% or so) it becomes more LitRPG-y and with the ending, I expect more of both that and SciFi from the next book.

The VR parts often felt shallow, but the mystery held me in the grip till the end. The real world was also wonderful (besides some very early parts where the bad guys were written in a way trying way too hard to sound epic). I could feel the depression of the poor. For the end, my favorite quote:

> PLEASE, UNDER THE PUBLIC SELF-REGULATION ACT OF 2034, PROCEED TO PLACE YOURSELF UNDER ARREST.

Disclaimer: I received the book for free

Amazing Sci fi, bad litrpg

Before you read anything else, know that this is a great sci fi story and I will certainly be reading the rest of the series. However, this should not be called a litrpg. It's not just semantics. A litrpg can't just take place in the "game" as it were, there absolutely has to be character progression and game mechanics coupled (you know, the RPG elements) with a great story. All we have here is a great story. The mechanics were sorely lacking and character progression was erratic. It's not until about halfway through the book do we even see a real skill notification and it's a very vague one at that. The MC goes from "skilless noob" to keeping up with the best players in what feels like a heartbeat with the reader none the wiser. The point is, that this should be called sci fi (and a darn good one at that) but it's barely a litrpg. There are almost no RPG elements.

Even though it may feel bumpy at times and seems to need some more editing, this was a great read. I finished it in a day. The story incorporates fragments from other pieces of scifi and anime in a very smart manner. The way the story develops and how it jumps from VR to reality is very smart. Can't wait to read the second part. On top of everything the author makes a great use of the English language at many points in the book, leaving you with a feeling of satisfaction after reading some carefully placed and cleverly thought sentences.

Slow start but strong ending.

Like the prequel, editing is a mess, but I certainly enjoyed the story overall

The story focuses on an alternate MC to the prequel, though he does make a cameo of sorts. We also hear from other characters throughout the book. I hope to see some of these characters react to each other later in the series.

At first the MC is fairly annoying and unlikable. With the supporting characters being more interesting. But his development throughout the book certainly improves this.

I look forward to reading more

Refreshing and Solid

Quite a foray into an interesting concept. I thought the characters were almost as if they were in the room with me, good banter. Looking forward to reading more in this series.

Excellent read

Fantastic arc, Cole leads well and they (Cole's group) had to struggle for what they needed. Then in the end it was totally worth that struggle, I hope we see more of Van his sister.

Not to bad

I would have liked more of the game element to be presented, but overall this was a decent story and I recommend it.

While at the start I wasn't sure where it was all going, the ending surprised me and I enjoyed the journey there. The book works well both as a standalone novel as well as apparently setting up the next one in the series, which while unexpected is nice and I am looking forward to it.

Great little book

Compared to the usual book from this genre, this book was great. I loved the incorporation of real world story and virtual. I also really enjoyed the lack of heavy game play writing. The game mechanics should always be second fiddle to the story.

Not the best

First I have to say that I only read the first 20% of the book. It was all I could manage, the main character is just too much of an annoying dick for me to care about.

OMG!!

Really life can be depressing enough without subjecting yourself to even worse in a stupid book. Dumped this about one third of the way through. Seriously not recommended.
