The three heroes of the Disaster Diaries are at it again in this the fifth outing for the disaster-fighting team. The aptly-named Sitting Duck is a town that has faced more than its fair share of disasters, but this time, the disaster is caused by a human, a transfer student named Felicia Forrester. Felicia loves science, and she is prone to conducting unethical experiments. This time, she concocts a growth serum, which when feed to a spider, causes the arachnid to grow to an enormous size. One huge spider is bad enough, but as it turns out, she's shared her formula with Dr. Stix at the local insectarium, and the entire town is now overrun by huge spiders. Usually, Sam Saunders is able to work with his two friends, Emmie and Arty, to troubleshoot problems, but this time, his own fears of spiders cripples him, and he is able to do very little to stop them. The only hope the town has is if Sam somehow overcomes his phobia. Fans of the series will enjoy this one, which makes readers think hard about what might happen if those small creatures around them suddenly grew and were larger than they are. I liked the illustrations that complement the story.
