Love, love, love romance, the paranormal, hunky Highlanders with their delicious brogue and hot kilts, so Terry Spear writes about those hunky Highlanders both in medieval times and as wolves in contemporary times. Jaguar shifters too! And young adult urban fantasy. And romantic suspense.
She grew up reading mystery, adventure, mythologies from around the world, ghost stories, the paranormal, fell in love with Dracula and Wolfman, and felt they needed loving too. Everyone should have someone to love. Which means her stories always have a HEA.

Ellie and her werewolf sisters own a shifter hotel. Brett Silver, an alpha werewolf, has been dating Ellie for a while. They even started having the shared dreams that show you your true mate…But Ellie is afraid to tell Brett about her special ability to see ghost. When Brett brings over his great aunt’s piano, Ellie can’t hide the fact that his great aunt’s ghost came with the piano. Especially when those ghosts hold secrets that uncover the strange happenings in Silver Town.
This is not your typical shifter read, Spear writes sweet and building romances that have characters that happen to be shifters. Of course, changing into a werewolf doesn’t happen in your typical contemporary romance and neither do the story’s characters normally have extraordinary abilities as seeing ghosts...but you get my drift.
Enjoyable, Entertaining and Easy, Between a Wolf and a Hard Place just hits the spot. There is some action, some suspense, a group of great characters and a cute and endearing romance.
I received this ARC copy of Between A Wolf and a Hard Place from Sourcebooks Casablanca. This is my honest and voluntary review. This book is set for publication April 4, 2017.
It all started with a calculated donation to the Silver Town Hotel. What alpha werewolf Brett had intended was to get the attention of one of the owners, wolf shifter Ellie MacTire. He never expected to find out just how special Ellie was or that his great-aunt’s piano was haunted by a very determined ghost with a message to deliver, a message she knew Ellie would hear.
Meanwhile, slow and steady is the course that Brett must take to win Ellie’s heart, but is she just playing hard-to-get or is she really not sure the kind-hearted, but strong Brett is the wolf for her? Is she even ready to settle down and make puppies? Until the ghost of the piano is tamed or freed, these two will spend quality time making sweet music as a supernatural duet.
Can Brett learn to believe in the ghosts that Ellie sees or will he become one more wolf on her list of disappointments? And what about the ghost? Will Ellie discover what the message from beyond is?
Do NOT expect over the top blood, gore and posturing from Terry Spear or her wolves. There will NOT be pages and pages of sex with some story in between, but there will be romance, a feeling of calm and unity among the werewolves who seem to have made peace with themselves and those around them. A fun read that speaks softly but carries a huge entertainment value. BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is further proof of the staying power of Terry Spear’s talent as an author.

Review For: 'Between a Wolf and a Hard Place' 'Between a Wolf and a Hard Place' by Terry Spear is book 21 in the "Heart of the Wolf" series. This is the story of Brett and Ellie. I have been jumping in and out of this series so for me this was a standalone book. I will say that it appears that Brett and Ellie met in another book but they have moved forward in their relationship other than a few dates before this book. Ellie and her sisters have opened a hotel in Silver Town. This hotel Ellie has found that they are ghost in the hotel. Ellie is able to talk to and see ghost which has caused her to loose relationships in the past. So she is worried that Brett won't be able to take her ability to see ghost. Brett knows that Ellie is hiding something and would like to know what that is. Brett is highly attracted to Ellie and hopes that she might be his mate. Loved watching these two come together and learn to trust/Love.*A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection*https://www.amazon.com/gp/profile/A2H...https://www.facebook.com/RomanceBookR...https://twitter.com/soapsrus68https:/...https://www.tumblr.com/blog/romancebo...
For me one word sums up this book, bored. I was bored when reading, didn't see the big attraction between Ellie and Brett, who were boring themselves. The plot with the ghosts were mildly interesting, but only mildly. I hope the series picks up with the next book.
First, the title is misleading. I was expecting steamy and exciting but what I got was a really descriptive lukewarm Ghost Busters. The story picked up at the end and ended well.

REVIEW: 3.5 stars--BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is the twenty first installment in Terry Spear’s contemporary, adult HEART OF THE WOLF paranormal, romance series focusing on the shifter wolves of Silver Town. This is Alpha werewolf Brett Silver, and Silver Town hotel co-owner Ellie MacTire’s story line. BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from several third person perspectives including Brett and Ellie BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is a ghost-story mystery. When the MacTire sister’s bought and renovated the old Silver Town hotel they didn’t expect unwanted guests including a couple of ghosts who took up residence in the old hotel. Enter Chrissy, a former maid and current spirit that haunts the Silver Town hotel, and Brett’s late, great aunt Matilda who couldn’t leave behind the family piano hitching a ride to the hotel when the Silver brother’s donated the musical instrument to the MacTire’s renovation project. What ensues is the building relationship between Ellie and Brett, and the search for the truth as to why neither spirit can move on from the past.
The MacTire sisters see and hear ghosts, and renovating the old Silver Town hotel has kept the sisters busy as it pertains to the history and the ghosts haunting the hotel. While Ellie’s relationship with Brett continues to grow our heroine is perplexed when the usual ‘dream walking’ mate doesn’t enter into her fantasies or dreams and is determined to date as many wolves in order to find her Mr. Right. The $ex scenes are limited, mostly implied, or fade to black.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including the MacTire sisters Laurel and Meghan, Brett’s brothers CJ, Eric and Sarandon, as well as most of the Silver Town wolves. Ellie’s ghost hunting uncles, Stanton, Yolan and Vernon, return to cause a little mischief and mayhem.
BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is a sweet and simple paranormal romance about two wolves looking into the death’s of two permanent guests at the Silver Town hotel. The premise is spirited; the characters are playful; the romance is a slow build to a happily ever after.
Between a Wolf and a Hard Place is the seventh installment of the Silver Town Wolf series by Terry Spear.
Ellie MacTire and her sisters have taken residents in the Silver Town. Owning the only hotel in the town, they fix it up so that other wolves will come and relax. However, these sisters have a unique ability to communicate with the dead and right now they have a couple of ghost in their midst. On top of that, Ellie must figure out if Brett is the one for her and if he can handle her families secrets.
Will Brett and the pack be able to handle the MacTire’s secret or will these sisters find themselves being up rooted?
I’ve been a fan of Terry Spears for a long time, but Between a Wolf and a Hard Place certainly took me for a loop. I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous in how Terry Spear’s would wrap ghost presence into a story, but here it is! And it was wonderful! I loved the sisterly bond that was shown throughout the story, but funny enough, I really enjoyed the ghost interactions. It’s apart of who the MacTire sisters are all about and this pack just keeps on giving unconditional love.
In addition to that, I loved that we once again, get to see all the previous couples pop in and interact with the main characters. I really look forward to the next installment! I highly recommend the Silver Town Wolf series to those who love alpha males and shifters! - Reviewed by Julianna
YAY more of the McTire sisters! Book #21 of the Heart of the Wolf series and book #7 of the Silver Town Wolf series. Terry Spear's writes a great ghost story. I am really enjoying this series, one thing I really like is the fact the characters don't have sex until they are ready to cement their relationship and call each other mates.
Ellie out of all her sisters has the stronger connection to ghosts, she can occasionally see them and communicate with them rather then just get a feeling. Ellie and Brett have been seeing each other and care for each other to the point Brett is thinking about mating but Ellie hasn't told Brett her secret yet and with how her last boyfriend acted she is scared to tell him. Brett donated his family's piano to Ellie and her sisters for their B&B but the piano stool and music isn't the only thing that comes with the piano, Brett's Grandmother's ghost tags along too. It's been over a year since the sisters moved to Silver Town and almost that long since Brett and Ellie have been dating and with the appearance of the new ghost Ellie knows it's time to tell Brett the truth.
Uncovering the reason Brett's Grandmother hasn't passed on to the other side may be more trouble than expected especially since she is being stubborn and not wanting to communicate and making the other house ghost crazy. Brett doesn't initially believe the extent of Ellie's abilities he humours her for the most part until he witness' it himself. Something Ellie said about Brett's grandmother rings suspicious with him, he starts to look into her death and he finds out things he never knew. The McTire sisters and their cousins are still on rocky ground and Brett doesn't help matters by asking them a questions about exorcising a ghost which doesn't help his relationship with Ellie.
Overall, like always this is a well written and very exciting story. The characters are all very likable and very easy to empathize with. My only problem is how Brett acted after he found out about Ellie's ability he started to act like the sister didn't have any idea what they were doing (like they haven't been doing this their whole life *insert sarcasm here*) and while the sisters thought it was cute and it showed that he was at least trying to learn more it would have just been a whole lot easier and less condescending to just ask her. Otherwise it was a very entertaining story and I look forward to more.
BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE is a sweet romance story with some added ghost mysteries to spice things up a bit. I love a good ghost story so I was pretty engaged in figuring out just why Brett's aunt is haunting a piano installed in Ellie's hotel. Like most of Terry Spear's stories in this series, this one is high on the sweetness, with a dash of mystery, love, and some mild tension that is resolved neatly. Its a quick and pretty satisfying read.
I enjoyed Ellie and Brett's slow build romance and watching them try to get to know each other along with figure out the whole haunted hotel and piano situation. There's no huge gory fight scene, wolf pack drama issues beyond the amusing relationship hi-jinks between Ellie and Brett. The conflict with their relationship is deciding whether they should be together or not and Ellie trying to date other people which amusingly doesn't go as planned.
I was not a fan of the B-plot involving Ellie's ghost-hunting cousins and a haunted car. It was kind of unnecessary and not as interesting to me as the A-plot. BETWEEN A WOLF AND A HARD PLACE was a fun read and pretty typical of a Heart of the Wolf series story with a sweet romance, and some interesting plots with low stakes drama that you know will be resolved pretty easily. Basically a good read on a rainy evening or on the beach.
I received an ARC of this book and had only read a couple of books in the series prior to this (and not in the proper order), so that might be coloring my opinion but I could not get into this book. Ellie MacTire owns an inn with her two sisters; she's a werewolf shifter and she happens to be able to see ghosts. When the wolf she's dating, Brett, donates his great aunt's piano to the inn, it comes with a surprise--Brett's great aunt's ghost. Ellie hasn't told Brett she sees ghosts and now feels additional pressure since the ghost she's seeing is a beloved family member. The pacing was just very slow and the main conflict of the beginning, her being able to see ghosts and whether or not he'll believe her, was somewhat anticlimactic. There's then the question of whether or not she died of natural causes, but even that just wasn't very exciting. Ultimately I couldn't even finish the book. Part of this might have been my lack of emotional connection to the main characters since the majority of their individual character development seemed to have occurred in a different book--they were already dating when the book starts.

This was a fun light story with many angles. Shifters that find themselves in a ghostly mystery. For those of you that like a light romance without a lot of sex – this one is for you. Full of likeable characters and sweet romance. A nice quick read.

Between a Wolf and a hard place is part of a bigger series of books, however, can be read as a standalone. It just means you have more to digest at the beginning, but I managed just fine. This is the first book I have read by Terry Spear, and it was an interesting read. Paranormal fantasy romance which is so much more than just a shapeshifter mating story.
Ellie is a beautiful wolf with a special gift. She will only date guys who accept her talent. She's had problems in the past and doesn't want to make the same mistake again. Brett is her potential mate, and Ellie needs to tell him about her ghost whispering before things become too heated.
Brett wants Ellie more than anything. He knows she's special but hasn't yet found out just how talented she is.
A ghost wants Ellie's help, and Brett is a relative. It's linked to an old piano delivered to the inn Ellie owns with her sisters. The family heirloom belongs to Brett's great aunt, and she wants them to solve a mystery.
4.5 stars out of 5.

Although it might be a pain in the butt at times I love how a pack works nothing is a secret, and I loved Brett, “no. This is just between you and me.” He glanced around at the pack members at the ball. “And well, the pack, since everyone seems to have stopped dancing and is watching us to see what’s going on. I’m sure they all figured I might ask you to mate with me tonight.” I liked this book, I really liked Brett.
Hot wolves and hitchhiking ghosts in a light, fun read!
“Do you believe in ghosts?”
Between a Wolf and a Hard Place by Terry Spear is the twenty-first installment in her Heart of the Wolf series in which two wolves in the close-knit wolf-town of Silver Town find romance. Told from multiple third person perspectives, it’s a quick, amusing and light-hearted story with a simple, uncomplicated plot – in other words, a perfect escape read. It is the story of alpha Brett Silver and Ellie MacTire.
The shenanigans all start with Brett’s donation of his great-aunt’s piano to the Silver Town Hotel. What Brett didn’t know was that accompanying the piano was a hitchhiking ghost identified as his great-aunt Matilda. At the hotel, Matilda quickly made her presence known as she is determined to pass on a missive to Ellie. Ellie happens to own the Silver Town Hotel with her two sisters.
Meanwhile, Brett is determined to win Ellie’s heart. The couple has been dating for a while, but Brett badly wants to take the next step. With his great-aunt generating raucous mischief at the hotel creating issues keeping the guests oblivious to the ghostly goings-on, is it possible that Brett will finally be convinced that ghosts do exist? The answer has huge consequences for the couple as Ellie refuses to mate with a wolf that doesn’t believe in ghosts. Of course, she won’t tell Brett that as Brett and Ellie work together to solve an old mystery.
Even though this book is part of a series, the story works very well as a standalone read, There are interconnected characters with the previous books and fans of the series will certainly enjoy catching up with previous favorite characters. Rest assured, though, that there is absolutely no need to be aware of the previous books to fully enjoy this tale.
Following please find a few favorite quotes from Between a Wolf and a Hard Place:
She was thinking she needed to post a letter in the Lonely Hearts column in the Silver Town Gazette: She-wolf seeking male wolf who believes in ghosts. No others need apply. --- “Brett will need some clothes if someone can drop some by.” “All we need is a bear rug,” Meghan said. --- “You are such a wolf.” “When it comes to you? Absolutely.”
It is a glowing testament to Terry’s storytelling skills that this far into the series, her stories are still fresh, original and fun-to-read. This one, in particular, had plenty of silly humor with some truly hilarious scenes that had me laughing out loud. If you enjoy entertaining paranormal romances with swoon worthy alpha heroes in the form of hot wolves, ghosts, and an ending guaranteed to make you smile, I would highly encourage you to check out Between a Wolf and a Hard Place!

Between a Wolf and a Hard Place picks up pretty close after the 17th book in the series, A Silver Wolf Christmas, and continues the pairing of of the Silver brothers and the MacTire sisters. Along with the romance we get some ghostly mysteries and interfering families- all to be expected when you look at the series and the players involved. I liked Ellie's character, she is strong and independant, with out making foolish decisions. Brett was a nice guy, with the possessive attitude that comes with being an alpha wolf, but seems to be good at tamping it down when that is the smarter path. However, I have to admit hat I never really connected with him- feeling more like he was the expected character, with the expected personality, rather than a person in his own right. I cannot pinpoint anything that left me flat, but something just did not work for me. The same with the danger level- the majority of Spear's romance has some serious danger in store for one or both of the major players, I never really felt that here. I just was never on the edge of my seat.
Between a Wolf and a Hard Place is a decent read, but I think I might be done with this series ( after I read the next two with I already have on my Kindle). The story is still a good read, but not as engaging and suspenseful as the first few I have read. With the amount of books I still want to read, this just might be one of the series I need to put aside.
Full review also on my blog: http://nextbookaroundthecorner.blogsp... Since the A Very Jaguar Christmas, I hadn't read anything from Terry Spear. So when I saw Between a Wolf and a Hard Place on Netgalley, I had to request it. I was curious if this book was going to give you the same cozy feeling of the jaguar christmas or not.
And indeed, Terry just writes in a very relaxing and enchanting way. You meet Ellie and her two sisters, who are running the Silver Town hotel. In this town, there are a lot of wolf-shifters living, so alpha guys defending their territory (read: there girls) is quit normal. And since they are good looking, like Brett, I certainly have no problems with that. Ellie, however, is more hesitant to engage with the romantic guy. Because she has a little secret: she can see and communicate with the dead. And since the last guy she told her secret has been treating her horribly, she is not very open to a new relationship.
But clumsy Brett is trying really hard and being very sweet. Makes me want to remind my husband about bringing flowers, LOL.
So in all, a very pleasant read, with some excitement here and there. You gotta love Brett's (already deceased) great aunt, because she is hilarious. If you want to have a nice and feelgood read, sit back and relax with Between a Wolf and a Hard Place. Four out of five stars from me.
-3 stars. i had an issue with the guy contacting the cousins the gal has explicitly told them NOT to contact. and its discussed multiple times in the book by multiple different characters how it would be a **bad** idea for him to do contact those people because the sisters have made it clear they are not welcome. AND THE DUMBASS DOES IT ANYWAY. like really? the author has gone out of her way to repeatedly write how bad an idea it would be, as though the readers need it spelled out for them again and again before they could possibly understand... and then the author writes him doing it anyway.
"so the wernicke ghost-buster cousins of yours, can they help with the womans spirit?" ellie snorted. brett smiled. "fakes, hua?"
"she didn't want her cousins trying to make a profit off them."
"the sisters don't want their cousins involved in the inn in any way shape or form."
"i can see that backfiring since the sisters don't want the cousins involved."
"do you want to stir up a hornet's nest with ellie and her sisters?"
"brett was afraid that if the sisters learned of it, his wolf would be cooked."
"believe me they wouldn't be amused if you tried to sneak the wernicke brothers in."
"i spoke to stanton about exorcising a ghost." she didn't respond. "ellie?" still no response. then he realized the phone line was dead.
"he knows how we feel about our cousins with regard to the inn."
"Between a Wolf and a Hard Place" by Terry Spear. Book 21 in the Heart of the Wolf series. Book 7 in the Silver Town Wolf series.
I just finished reading this book August 16, 2017. This is my review.
I really enjoyed this book about Brett and Ellie. Very sweet and endearing. The books in this series are more loving romance than hot and heavy romance, focusing on the relationship more rather than the physical. You really feel the love between Brett and Ellie and their journey to mating is beautiful. Throw in a ghost and a mystery about Brett's Great-Aunt and you have a really fun and intriguing story.
Brett Silver has been in love with Ellie MacTire since she moved to town with her sisters a year ago and bought a hotel to renovate. And she kicked him out for trying to help and being in her way! He's been taking his time trying to court her. He didn't want to come on to strong and scare her away. He knows Ellie is his mate because he's been dreaming about her every night. And he's pretty sure she's dreaming of him too. The only problem is Ellie believes in ghosts and he doesn't. She's also denying that they're dream mated. So what does Brett do? The dumbest thing ever...and tells Ellie to date other wolves and see if she dreams about them instead of him!
Ellie MacTire is having a problem. When Brett Silver donates a baby grand piano that belonged to his Great Aunt to her hotel, she didn't think the ghost of his aunt would come with it! She and her sisters now have two ghost haunting their hotel...and just before the hotel opens for the season. Besides dealing with ghosts, Ellie is also dreaming about Brett every night. He's courting her big-time but she just can't commit if he doesn't believe ghosts exist and that she has the ability to see and talk to them. Their physical attraction is undeniable but how can they have a relationship if he doesn't believe what she's saying most of the time?
Such a cute story. Ellie and Brett are really likable and have great chemistry together. The story flows well and the descriptions are clear and vivid. Not a lot of action in this book but the mystery about Brett's great-aunt is interesting. The situational humour is great. Most of the scenes when Ellie is "dating" made me snicker.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I love the books by Terry Spears and I loved this one either but somehow I was always waiting for some action. It was nice and sweet and I loved the characters and the story but there was no tension. The story could have just gone on and on and on, nice, with some laughter, some who-was-it, some whatever and it wouldn't have made a difference.
The main part was the love story and I loved that you just knew that the hero and the heroine belong together but even the bumps in the road were more like... mosquito bites... and not really bumps. I loved that in a way but the story was lacking tension and some more real action. It felt more like reading something like "a month in the life of" despite those ghosts that they had to free and finding out about the ghosts' fates and so on.
On the whole, this is a nice book but I like the other books by the author better.
An Inn, triplet wolves, ghosts, secrets, holidays, a piano, and sexy dreams make this paranormal a fabulous adventure.
What will happen when Brett SIlver discovers Ellie MacTire's sexy dreams? Does that mean they are dream mated? Who will fall victim to the strange ocurrances within the Inn? Mysterious murders, family history, and a pack of wolves, who will find their mate in a town with secrets?
If you like spicy paranormal shifter romance books, give this a try. Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca Publishing for this advance reader copy for review consideration. All opinions are my own. (less)
Crazy stuff is going on at the Inn, they are moving Brett's great aunt Matilda's piano there to entertain the guests. Ellie is a wolf shifter but also a ghost seer and she is constantly seeing Chrissy the maid who died at the inn. Brett wants to mate Ellie but she isn't quite ready yet and now with the piano at the inn Matilda has shown up to Ellie and isn't happy about her and Brett kissing. When an old model Plymouth just about runs him off the road he finds out a ghost was controlling it. Ellie will not mate with Brett until he can be comfortable with her seeing ghosts. There is a lot of stuff going on but if you can get a picture of it in your head it's pretty funny. Reviewed on behalf of Once upon an Alpha
I liked this book Brett and Ellie were cute to read about and I found myself rooting for them from beginning to end. This was an interesting take on wolves and I found it refreshing. It was interesting to see a shy alpha wolf it was almost unheard of but it completely worked for this book. I really liked the way this author wrote this story and I cannot wait to read more of what they have written.
First time ever I could not finish a book from Terry. When you start the book the characters are already dating. The cover does not go with the book. The ghost thing is mildly interesting. The piano playing is lame and not sexy at all. Brett being the newspaper writer isn’t sexy. And the “date other people” thing is not much of a plot. I’m not giving up on the series. I’ve made it to book 21 but it was my least favorite.
I'm not quite sure how to put into words how I feel about this book. It's not bad. I think it may be that the writing style just isn't quite my cup of tea? I didn't find a lot of depth to the story. It just seemed to "float" along. There was a lot of internal thoughts, perhaps a bit too much, and a bit too much non-essential dialog. Again, just my opinion.
The book description called it a "bold new paranormal romance" but frankly I found it rather weak. Lots of characters, ghosts, wolves, but none of them were very interesting, and I found the romance rather tepid.
I tried, I mean I REALLY tried. But after trying and trying to get involved in the characters, plot, etc, for a monther(!), I give up. I was bored reading it and thought the characters were boring. DNF.
I really enjoyed this book, it was a fun read, although I could have slapped Brett for his stupid off hand suggestion, and Ellie for stubbornly insisting on following through with it! I loved how it ended though, those two were meant to be! I can't wait for more in the series!
