Djinni and the Geek
Djinni and the Geek Cindy Spencer Pape Computer science professor David Garvaglia is nobody's idea of a hero. Is he? When David opens an antique puzzle box and finds a Djinni, his first thought isn't for wishes, it's how to set her free. Anissa has spent centuries as a prisoner of the box and has dreamed of the day some handsome master would release her. But she also has to adapt to the twenty-first century, and defeat an evil wizard. Besides, once she meets David, she's not so sure she wants to be freed.

This was a pretty cute little story. It was definitely a continuation from the previous book in the series and I enjoyed seeing how relationships had progressed in the elapsed time. I loved how David used SCA reinactments to his advantage in the final battle of the story. Alanni was quite interesting as well, and not my typical preconceived notion of a Djinni. I thought it was refreshing that David was Wiccan, as it is not a religion majorly focused on. All things considered, a great way to spend an afternoon!

What the heck did I just read? Gave up 2/3 of the way, did not finish. Are you a bloke? Did you ever accidentally walk into the ladies restroom because it had a confusing sign on the door? If you haven't, but you want to know what that feels like, read this book!
It's my own fault really, I should know better than to trust a book with a cover like that by an author whose other books have bare chested beefcakes on the covers. I found this book in a list of fantasy adventure stories with a bit of romance told from the male character's perspective. Although technically true for the most part, most of the descriptions once the Djinni was out of the box, were from Anissa's perspective. No biggie, there's still a story about a geek and a Djinni who fall in love, right? Wrong.
First off, Cindy doesn't seem to know what a geek is. The main character, Dave, is a big burly dude with rippling muscles, a booming deep voice, who lays his own floor tiles, chops his own wood, former military with a collection of weapons he knows how to use, and who grew up on the mean streets of a big city. The only thing geek about him is he buys clothes from Thinkgeek with slogans on them like "Han shot first", he knows how to browse the internet, and he gets drunk on craft beer and plays console games. Other than that he's your typical clueless dudebro. David is not a geek, he's a jock in geek's clothing.
It's very rare I'll give anything one star. The only reason I ever would is because there are no redeeming qualities at all, or it offended me to the point of boiling rage.
The graphic sex scenes didn't bother me. I'm a healthy red blooded man, I dig it. But the characters, oh gosh no. Don't call someone a geek who clearly isn't. We've heard of the "fake geek girl" but here we have, in glorious detail, the "fake geek guy". I think I threw up a little.
Aside from that, the story was boring. There was no emotional or dramatic tension. There was no romance, just instant overwhelming sexual attraction. Anissa had no personality, but just came across as a wide eyed perpetually horny tabula rasa. There was no love story here, no romance, just quivering loins and wandering hands. I've read better romance in the Penthouse Forum.
Please someone write a book where geeks are geeks and the characters have real personality. Write a story that's emotionally literate, one that real guys (and gals) can identify with. I believe there's a market for paranormal / fantasy / sci-fi romantic fiction from the male perspective, that even us dudes can enjoy. I'm still looking, but this ain't it folks.

David Garvaglia, IT geek and Professor and Renaissance re-enactor. He made friends and came to the rescue of a dragon hiding in the steam tunnels of the local Uni in book 1.
He buys a puzzle box from a little store in Florida and when he starts having erotically charged dreams, which end by telling him to open the box, he finally tackles the puzzle. A djinni appears and will grant him 3 wishes.
Anissa has spent nearly 800 years enslaved to the will of others. Cursed into the box by a powerful wizard. She feels her hero has finally arrived but is met by a shaggy-haired, bespectacled slob. He has all he needs and he decides to use his wishes to help Anissa escape from Murdoch, the evil wizard.
This is a great story and we see why Anissa was cursed and how she came by her first master. The limits of her powers are also explained in detail, so she can't just zap herself out and cannot harm anyone.
But she is not your stereotypical servant and won't grant wishes that goes against her morals. She is a well-defined, self-determined female, dealing with a traumatic past from an early age. I truly hated Murdoch by the time the book ended!!!!
David is a strong, intelligent male, who served time served in the military, and can llok after himself and those around him but can use his brain in difficult situations before acting.

Great book. I loved the characters...some were quite unusual. And the settings were real enough to "see".

I really enjoyed this book really loveable David and Anissa
although he didn't really come across as a real geek but loved how sweet, protective and thoughtful he was
