Jeffry, I’m no mere guinea pig ! I’m a Handsome . And Handsomes have always been famous. I simply cannot be the only Handsome in history to not be famous.'
Piggy Handsome is a very confident Guinea pig with a hugely inflated ego - he hails from a long line of very famous Guinea pigs. But sadly Handsome hasn't yet achieved world renown. With the help of gruff-talking Jeffry the budgie and the inadvertent efforts of two dastardly villains Dan and Dolly Dixon, Handsome might realise his dream, get in the papers and save the day - without even realising. All in one day trip to the seaside!
Pip was born in Cheltenham, UK, where she spent her childhood gobbling up books and dreaming about being an author herself. At the age of 19, she began a career in journalism, writing and editing for local and national newspapers and magazines. After the births of her daughters, Pip began writing for parenting magazines and websites. In 2012, she won the inaugural Greenhouse Funny Prize, with a series of stories about Squishy McFluff: The Invisible Cat, who Pip had based on her elder daughter's 'real' imaginary kitten. The first book in the series was published by Faber Children's in 2014. Pip's first picture book, Daddy's Sandwich, was published by Faber Children's in May 2015 and was shortlisted in the Sainsbury's Children's Book Awards Picture Book category in the same year. Pip continues to write the Squishy McFluff series, and a raft of new titles are planned in the coming three years, including three further picture books, and a new young reader series. As a huge fan of Pip Jones’ Squishy McFluff books, I was keen to read another of her offerings. Piggy Handsome did not disappoint. The story about a fame hungry guinea pig is a lot of fun, and the lively illustrations by Adam Stower are full of humour and charm. I’m looking forward to reading this to my son when he’s a little older (currently 4). I think children of 5-8 will find this an entertaining and engaging series.
Piggy Handsome is a laugh-out-loud read about an arrogant, short-tempered and rather dapper looking guinea pig and his quest to be a star.
Piggy Handsome just has to be famous. He is the 19th generation of ‘Handsomes’ and all those before him have become famous for one reason or another. Unfortunately, he is now nearly three (thirty in human years) and is still yet to see his name in the papers or his face on the TV. To prove he is worthy of the Handsome name, Piggy decides that if he isn’t famous by tomorrow he will change his name. A plan is formulated and with the help of his able compatriot Jeff Budgie it shouldn’t be too difficult to accomplish. All he needs to do is become the World Chip Chomping Champion…
What follows is a series of slapstick comedic moments between Piggy Handsome and his sidekick Jeff Budgie. The duo provide hilarious views on the ‘humans’ and Pip Jones captures the world through the eyes of pets so perfectly. There are comedic moments aplenty and the engaging dialogue between Handsome and Jeff is littered with banter that shows that despite their differences they are the best of friends. Jeff Budgie is brilliant - tweeting budgie song when the ‘human’ is around and then sounding like an East London taxi driver the rest of the time. Throw in a dog with alzheimers, a potentially killer cat, a toad with a sticky tongue and some rather aggressive seagulls and you have the perfect comedy caper.
This is an ideal early chapter book and a great read for those children who are moving on to longer length books. The chapter titles are hilarious and the text is nicely spaced out so as not overwhelm young readers. Adam Stower’s delightful illustrations that are frequently dotted throughout the book are full of warmth and charm and capture the different personalities of Piggy Handsome and Jeff Budgie perfectly.
What I really like about the book is that even though it is targeted at a young audience, Pip Jones serves up plenty of delicious language - villainous, pompous, maisonette, coiffed …
A great book to be shared with 5+ and a book that 7+ will independently read. Children with pets will absolutely love this book and it is sure to be a hit with even the most reluctant of readers.
A delightfully funny story book for the under tens (and their parents, too) Piggy Handsome is a silly, self important guinea pig, with a history of famous ancestors. Hearing three years old, or thirty in equivalent human years, he is desperate to become famous, too, and we follow him in his quest, ably assisted by his blue birth friend. Toby Hadoke narrates, greatly adding to the fun. It reminded me of the fabulous Danger Mouse. The
Piggy Handsome is desperate to get famous. “I’ll change my name if I don’t get famous by tomorrow, then I’m a Handsome no more!” He feels he doesn’t belong in this family. But here comes the perfect possibility... What Piggy Handsome doesn’t realize is that he’s only heading towards being sat on and that the rude people in the Hot Dog van are actually...
It’s actually quite a good book but it could use some more tension buildup. The second volume was much better.
A cute, very funny story of a guinea pig desperate to be a star and his long-suffering budgie friend. They get into all sorts of hilarious scrapes; I think this would be great read-aloud for Y2 and an independent read for Y3. Loads of action; Piggy really is his own worst enemy but has a knack of being in the wrong place at the right time to be a hero in the end.
