Family Secret #1

A House Divided

Rate this book
Families always have secrets. And secrets have the power to heal—or hurt. Now beloved author Donna Hill's enthralling novel explores the wrongs we do for the right reasons, and the ways we struggle to reconcile the truth.

Journalist Zoie Crawford had to leave New Orleans to finally make her own life. Her grandmother, Claudia, inspired her to follow her dreams—just as her mother, Rose, held on too tight. But with Claudia's passing, Zoie reluctantly returns home, where the past is written in the lonely corners of the bayou and the New South's supercharged corridors of power. And there she discovers a stunning, painstakingly kept secret—one that could skyrocket her career, but destroy another woman’s—and change both their vastly different lives, for better or for much worse.

Zoie has always put the truth first. Now, as the line between the personal and professional blurs, and she tries to understand her relatives’ deception, she must face some tough questions. Is there a way to expose the truth and save those you love? And at what cost? Heartfelt, emotional, and revelatory, A House Divided is an unforgettable tale about making the hardest of choices, coming to terms with all you could lose—and finding what forgiveness and family truly mean.

A House Divided is Donna Hill's solo novel about an up and coming journalist Zoie Crawford. Just as her career is taking off, she's called back home to New Orleans because her grandmother died. She's riddled with guilt the whole time since they were close but she never got around to visiting her since her ambitious nature wouldn't allow her the time off from work. Avoiding her family didn't entice her to come home even with her grandmother's impending death.

Just when Zoie is ready to leave for New Orleans, a little bit of serendipity comes in the form of a new assignment handed down from her boss. She is to shadow the campaign of Kimberly Graham who hails from an elite New Orleans family. Convinced she can handle the new assignment and her grandmother Claudia's wishes upon her death, Zoie in turn begins to uncover some harrowing truths about her families' past. These revelations could cause a lot of damage for the two families involved.

A House Divided is not the first time I've been acquainted with this author. I've read a few books by Donna Hill as well as a few she co-authors with Brenda Jackson. A House Divided is a fast read. The girth of the story features Zoie but Hill touches on Kimberly and Jackson. Jackson has got to be the most perfect man ever... wow!

At times I felt there were issues touched upon that could have been further explored. Race relations, family secrets, past loves. I understand that essentially this novel is a romance, there was definitely room to explore these topics a little deeper. Kimberly's story and aftermath would be what I'm most interested in finding out.

Although A House Divided is a fast read that captures readers attention early on, I felt that the story needed a little more depth especially in the the character sense. The story doesn't unfold naturally. It almost felt like one moment they felt one way, then in the next chapter, an epiphany was reached and everything turns out OK. And as far as Zoie is concerned, I didn't like her much of the novel. I almost found her to be way too selfish. As far as the other characters such as the mother and her sister's, Kimberly, and Jackson all seemed like caricatures. Although I dream of a man like Jackson, he just didn't seem real. I hope there's someone out there like him but... He's got to be every woman's dream. SERIOUSLY!

Overall, I did enjoy Donna Hill's A House Divided and definitely will read more by her. I do feel like the novel needed more depth but it's a real page turner so I definitely recommend busting it out at the beach or on the porch with a glass of lemonade.

A HOUSE DIVIDED is general fiction that nicely combines family drama and contemporary romance. Hill manages to spend a sufficient amount of time developing both aspects in order to make the story flow well. The death of Zoie's grandmother brings her back to New Orleans and the family she has a strained connection to. Zoie's mother, Rose, represents both love and distress. Rose is a strong parent who loves Zoie, but she doesn't necessarily understand what drives Zoie. Zoie wants her family to understand and support her desire to be a successful journalist in New York, and is frustrated with their lack of interest in her career. She felt the need to leave New Orleans and all of it's family obligations, that to Zoie, felt restrictive. For Rose, and many members of the family, it felt as if Zoie was rejecting where she came from and what makes her who she is.

When Zoie returns home she longs for her family to recognize and acknowledge the up and coming woman that she has become, but is disappointed that they still see the young, overzealous, and slightly ungrateful girl that left. Zoie, for her part, could have been more understanding and considerate of her family too. The death of her grandmother is what brings her back home, and it's her grandmother's will that leads Zoie to finding out more than she could have imagined about her family's true history and her grandmother's legacy. To add to all of this, Hill also weaves in the return of a past love that could prove to be a key piece to Zoie's overall happiness.

A HOUSE DIVIDED could easily have been a much longer book, but Hill kept the story tightly woven and didn't allow for too much meandering down secondary storylines. I would have enjoyed some of the more complicated parts of the story being developed more. Although, there were parts that were cut short, I enjoyed the story overall.

This is a fast paced book by Donna Hill, where family secrets could make or break relationships. Zoie, an ambitious journalist, comes home after her grandmother's death and discovers the skeletons in the closet.
This story has its own mystery and twists and secrets but it also has Jackson, the perfect man for every woman. At least a woman can dream...
The author, Donna has concentrated this story on Zoie but the other characters Kimberly and Jackson also play their parts. Since this is a fast paced book, social issues are mentioned but not dealt further in the book. On the whole, it is romance+mystery+family and one perfect man = entertaining read on a wintery afternoon

This could be a really good story....but, there was so much unnecessary dialogue that actually took from the story and bored me a bit. There's some great plot twist scenarios which, again makes for a really good story...but, the author took 8 hours (audiobook) to get to the point. This is a story of an investigative reporter who was assigned a story about a Senate candidate and her family secrets....also the connection the candidate has with the reporter. This story also has a few other storylines to try and get through. Decent narration.

Loved the title. Loved the cover. Very strong beginning.
Jackson was a well-crafted character. He was a hero in so many ways and a stand-up guy. As for Zoie, I can understand drive and ambition but her motivation stemmed from selfishness and a disregard for others feelings. Will her attitude change? As for Zoie and Jackson's relationship - Their love was evident but love without mutual respect and communication is doomed. Will their love conquer all?
The most intriguing character was Kimberly. I wanted to see more of her. I felt as if I truly knew her and so was surprised by her decisions though her rationale was very realistic. I feel like there is more there for the author to bring out.
The best part of the book for me was some of the wise tidbits shared:
"If you give people a chance, you'll be surprised at how much they care. Folks show affection in all kinds of ways."
"Relationships are complicated. People need different things in their lives at different times."
"We do all kinds of things to protect the people we love. We don't always make the right decisions, but we do it out of love."
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.

All families have secrets. Learning how and when to reveal the secrets can bring heartbreak or healing to family members. An excellent one day read because I could not leave the pages of the book. The characters because my companions until I finished the last page.

1. True Rating - 3.5 stars

2. Voice Actor: Karen Chilton provided a good four star performance.

3. Author: This is the first book I read by Donna Hill. The author has a simplistic writing style that kept my attention throughout the book.

4. Topics or Theme: This is a romance novel that discusses family secrets and lies, racial passing, and the privilege of the wealthy.

5. Character Review:

Zoie Crawford is a 31 year old up and coming journalist living in New York. She is originally from New Orleans and has a complicated family history with her mother and aunts. Zoie’s exodus from New Orleans is twofold; she fled to New York to start fresh because of a difficult relationship with her boyfriend Jackson Fuller, and to distance herself from her family. Zoie is forced to return to New Orleans after the death of her grandmother, and she is forced to make life changing decisions regarding her family and love life.

Kimberly Maitland-Graham is an important secondary character. She hails from a prominent and wealthy family from New Orleans, and lives amongst the affluent in New York with her husband and twin daughters. Kimberly is a Republican candidate for state senate, but when Zoie is given the task of following her campaign and writing an expose, her life and campaign are irrevocably changed.

Note: Kimberly has a strained relationship with her parents. She eventually learns that the Maitlands are her grandparents, and that her late brother Kyle was her father. Kimberly also learned that her childhood nanny was her maternal grandmother.

Rose Bennett Crawford (supporting character) is Zoie and Kimberly’s biological mother. Rose became pregnant at the age of 16 by Kyle Maitland (19), and was sent away to have her baby in New York. She was informed that her child had passed away, and she was not aware that Kimberly was alive until Zoie learned the family's dark secret following the passing of her grandmother.

6. Pros: Family reconciliation was a strong theme throughout the book that I enjoyed.

7. Cons:

A ridiculous storyline involving Jackson's ex-girlfriend Lena caused Zoie and Jackson's relationship to be unnecessarily disrupted.

The author could have added more depth to the characters.

8. Recommend Book: Overall I enjoyed the novel and recommend it to others.

Family can make you do crazy things. Zoie has lived her entire life in constant battle with her mother and aunts. Even though she loved her grandmother (affectionally called Nana) with all of her heart, Zoie left for life in NYC. She made a name for herself and was a respected journalist. She was determined not to return to New Orleans to live and she had not even been for a visit in over five years. Then Nana died.

Returning to her childhood home opened all types of emotional baggage. She spent the week home in a blur. They had arrangements to make, repast to plan and finally the reading of the will. Zoie also had to face the love of her life after realizing she could never get over Jackson. The secrets that come out will shock everyone. The secrets will threaten to destroy the very fabric that has held the family together for this long. Zoie will have to make a choice. Will she pick her family? Or will she pick her man? Secrets are meant to be uncovered? Right?

This is a true African American romance with family drama. Many of the secrets, relationship issues and love put on ice are common features for educated African American women. Hill continues to write story's that prick your heart and make you think. Outstanding summer read.

This is a book about family secrets, relationships, ambition and race. The main charecter does not have a good relationship with her family which helped her to make the decision to move away. She is a journalist on the fast track to make all her career goals, when she is given a new assignment on a woman that is involved in politics. Also, she receives a call that makes her need to return home. This sets the stage for the family dynamics that are not good to come into play, a lost love, a good best friend and the main character having to make major decisions. A bombshell will make the lead character have to make a choice. Will she choose the choice that will advance her career or will she make the choice that does not help her career? This is my first time reading the author and while the book was good, there were some issues that I wish were given to the reader in more depth. Overall, I enjoyed the book and think this will be a good read for a book club. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review.

**Disclaimer: I received an advance reader copy of this book through Net Galley’s Library Reads program. I am under no obligation to review the book. All opinions are my own.**

While Donna Hill is most known for her romance novels, I really enjoy when she deviates from the genre. A House Divided intertwines Issues of race, class, and familial relationships with love lost and friendship. We are introduced to Zoie Crawford and the mysteries and secrets that lie in her family’s past. In the course of the novel Zoie finds answers to lifelong questions about her family and in so doing learns more about herself.
Although somewhat predictable, A House Divided adds a twist to the traditional family secret. The ending feels a little rushed and anticlimactic, but overall A House Divided is a pleasant read.

I thought I was really going to enjoy this book. Donna Hill put a lot of thought and information in to the beginning and middle of the book but there were WAY too many loose ends. It felt sloppy and lazy. I really wanted to know more. Did Kimberly and Zoie ever reconnect? Did Kimberly ever confront her parents or meet her biological mom? Did Zoie accept Jackson's news?
One other thing that drove me crazy, she used the phrase he/she running their tongue over their bottom lip to the point it was obnoxious. If I wasn't pregnant, I'd have probably started a drinking game for every time she had to include it. It was just weird. I liked the writing style and story enough that I will probably check out another one of her books.

Journalist Zoie Crawford, and her grandmother, Claudia, inspired her to follow her dreams.
Her mother, Rose, held on too tight. Zoie reluctantly returns home to New Orleans, after the death of her grandmother. While there she discovers a stunning, painstakingly kept secret — one that could skyrocket her career, and destroy another woman’s.

Donna Hill is an excellent writer. Hill paints the picture with her descriptive words to your brain like a canvas. She puts you into the story without overly detailing. This story covers similar issues in familiar across the world. I agreed with the approach that the main character, Zoie took in dealing with her personal and professional lives. It is without a doubt that there is another novel in the waiting.

Moving forward to “The Other Sister”.

A House Divided tells the story of Zoie Crawford, a freelance journalist who lives in New York. When her grandmother passes away, Zoie is forced to return home to New Orleans to the family that she ran away from. Zoie is assigned to write an article on an up and coming senatorial candidate. As she investigates into Kimberly Graham and learns more about her late grandmother, secrets are uncovered. Zoie is faced with the major question of truth or family. Donna Hill writes a somewhat entertaining and intriguing story. I wanted more development with the plot with more twists and turns. There were enough pages for more. This is good summer read for the beach or on a lazy afternoon.

Donna Hill has always been a great author when it comes to writing books that tug at your heart. Great read!

This book tells of family secrets...and how they can destroy a family but build a family up and make them stronger. Zoie Crawford is so complicated. She tries to be so strong but it is that strength that pushes everyone she can love away. She has a close relationship with her grandmother but complications with her mom and aunts. When her grandmother dies, Zoie is forced to face those complications along with family secrets. This situation akso makes her face the fact that she never got over her first true love, Jackson. The truth can hurt....but it can also heal.

This was an easy to read, well written book. I wonder if there will be a sequel because there were so many loose ends left at the conclusion. I was mad at most of the characters in the book, especially Zoie. She was very selfish and self centered while Jackson was a dream come true. This story touched on several subjects such as family secrets, teen pregnancy, racial identity, and indentured servitude. Powerful subjects but it fell a little flat to me.

This book read like a Lifetime drama. And I liked it. This is my first time reading Donna Hill and my read more from her. Family drama, intergenerational issues with a dash of romance.

I honestly selected this book on NetGalley because I saw a black woman with kinky curly hair on the cover.

This was an enjoyable read but needed more depth to the story. Zoie is called home when her grandmother dies and her will gives her complications that her life in New York does not bend to accepting. Also being on a career path as a journalist she is assigned a story that hits close to home.

The plot idea was intriguing but the unraveling of the story made it a little bland and needed more resolution

Divided

The family in this story didn't seem to get along at all. They just really tolerated each other. But once the matriarch dies & her will is read, everything has to change.
Zoie is the youngest. The granddaughter. She reluctantly comes to town & the will forces her to stay much longer than she ever wanted. But she starts digging & secrets that were long buried, she's uncovering. Most aren't good but she feels it needs to be done.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I think is was a very good read. I think the characters and story line were very believable. Secrets always have a way of coming to light but more importantly there is always a lesson to be learned from them when they are revealed. I will definitely try something from this author again.

I absolutely hated this book. I felt no connection with any of the characters. It didn't go into deep details at all. It only skimmed the surface. I felt like I was reading a long summary of the book. I could not relate to the hurt, the pain nor the betrayals. I definitely would not recommend this book. I was very disappointed.

A House Divided... and Unfinished

I’m not sure if this was meant to be a love story or a mystery or just plain old fiction, but whatever it was meant to be it wasn’t finished. It was like the author had a deadline to meet and then in the last five minutes before she had to submit the story she wrote a couple of paragraphs to wrap up the story lines and then ended it.

Returns home because of her grandmother's death. At the reading of the will, she finds out she has to stay in her grandmother's house for a year. If she does not, her mother and her aunts will lose the only home they know. She also finds out a family secret that sets off a chain of events that changed many people's lives forever.

A House Divided-family book 1

I very would definitely recommend this book. I found it had to like Zore, she only saw hurt her hurt she refused to see how revealing the Maitland would effect her mother or Kimberly's daughters and Jackson should been considered though she didn't know she could destroy his business.

Complications🤔

I enjoyed this this complex and baffling story, it is well written ✍🏾. I am becoming an admirer of the author's works. The characters are well developed and each character contributed to my enjoyment. This story of the untruths affecting people for generations can be healing when truth is revealed. Actually this narrative is non-fictional in our history.
