For eight agonizing months Chase Tinker's guilt over the despicable act he committed on Halloween night has been eating away at his heart and mind. His life gets even more complicated when secrets about the ancient Relic in the attic are revealed, right before an unwelcome caller arrives on the day of Chase's fourteenth birthday.
Despite these problems, his biggest concern is that his family's Dark Enemy, the Marlowe Family, is becoming more powerful with each passing day, fueled by the magic they continue to pillage from the many magical beings in the world. If Chase and his family are ever going to win, they'll need a whole lot of magical help. They must destroy the most evil threat the world has ever known.
I don't have any writing awards or honors or accolades to talk about. I didn't go to college or get any degrees to hang on my walls, but I've always LOVED to read. When I was a kid, my mom always knew where to find me: in my room with my nose in a book. Then in my twenties, I took an extensive creative writing course and I fell in love with writing, too. Making fun things up and writing them down for others to enjoy makes me happy.
Oh, and I also love pizza, chocolate, ballroom dancing, colorful Christmas lights, and watching TV. I live in the Seattle area with my wild and crazy ferrets. :)
In the third volume of the fabulous Chase Tinker series, two magical families--the Tinkers and the Marlowes--are at war. Using their powers of telekinesis, shape-shifting, teleportation, dangerous energy beams, and crazy magic sneezes, the families fight for control of The Relic and the ultimate magical power.
The Tinker house is a mansion boasting over 300 rooms, all of which have different powers. One contains singing plants, including the psychotic Cuddleupus that falls in love with humans, wraps them in its tendrils, and twirls them through the air. You must tickle its armpits to make it let go! The Tinkers can also set magical booby traps that will turn their enemies into slimy goop and other things. At the top of a towering staircase hangs a painting of a myriad of doorways; knock on the correct one to locate the secret entrance to the forbidden attic. Choose wrong, and your earlobes will stretch to your knees, or you’ll sprout a bushy tail, or hairy feet, or caterpillars for eyebrows.
While searching for a way to defeat the Marlowes, Chase finds a flying carpet that whisks him to a tiny porthole. Using his fingers, he stretches it open wide enough to crawl through. It’s a doorway into a meadow filled with fairies, which is a portal to other magical worlds and creatures.
The wildly creative Chase Tinker series combines touches of Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter with Haberman’s dry sense of humor. The House of Destiny will leave you wanting more. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens to the Relic and the Tinker family in the final installment in the series, Chase Tinker and The House of Mist.
Having enjoyed the first two books in the Chase Tinker Series I was really looking forward to reading this one and was not disappointed! As in the previous books, I quickly found myself alongside Chase and the others as the tale unfolded. There are lots of surprises in store for Chase, the Tinker family and for fans of the series, plus, more secrets of the house are revealed including.... No, I won't say more, it's too good a story to spoil it for other readers. MORE PLEASE Malia Ann Haberman!
I have tried and failed. You just can't second guess your way through the Chase Tinker series. Betrayal after betrayal and the ever evolving labyrinth of secrets keeps you on your toes.
After the epic battle in England, the Tinkers are licking their wounds. They are hard pressed to stop the Marlowes and their evil designs. The entire magical world is besieged and all magic is in danger of falling in the hands of the Marlowes. Chase, Andy, Persephone and Nori are beset with doubts regarding their ability to protect the relic and save the world.
And then comes the MOTHER OF ALL ATTACKS. Marlowes have taken over the Tinker House. The elders in the family are decimated and rendered useless. Chase now bears the burden of entire magical world on his shoulders. Its a cliff hanger that leaves you craving so much so that it actually aches.
I just can't wait for the final showdown. This is pure magical stuff. Malia manages to fire the readers' imagination like no one else.
Book Three in Malia Ann Haberman’s CHASE TINKER series is another wildly exciting installment in a magical, whimsical adventure for middle-grade readers. HOUSE OF DESTINY picks up a few months after the conclusion of HOUSE OF SECRETS, with almost-fourteen-year-old Chase Tinker fighting feelings of guilt over the death of his cousin Janie. He knows Janie brought it all on herself by trying to kill his brother Andy, but that doesn’t make him feel much better. To make matters worse, Chase has failed math and has to attend summer school if he hopes to enter 9th grade in the fall. But summer school will certainly get in the way of his continuing efforts to fight the insidious Marlowe family, the “wicked, heartless beings [who are] determined to steal all the magic and free will in the world.” When fifteen-year-old Alex Marlowe shows up asking for sanctuary from the Tinkers, Chase is immediately suspicious. Even after his father and grandfather seem to believe Alex’s story that he wants nothing to do with the evil Marlowe family, Chase can’t bring himself to trust Alex. So when the Marlowes plot to take over the Tinkers’ magical house and get their hands on the mystical Relic, Chase must fight back. But is Alex really on his side, or is he a mole for the rotten Marlowes?
While Haberman makes an effort in this novel to clue new readers in to what’s happening, it really makes sense to read the previous two novels first. This is a series, much like the HARRY POTTER books are a series, and starting with Book Three means you’re missing a bunch of the story. Chase and his family are magical humans who have dedicated their lives to preserving the marvelous Relic from which all the magic in the world emanates. The Marlowes have managed to steal a Shard of the Relic, but it’s not enough for them – they want control of all of it. And in HOUSE OF DESTINY we see a bit of what the magical world has become as a result of the Marlowes’ evil. But to really understand Chase’s relationship with his father, his crush on friend Persephone, his self-doubts about his worthiness to be the next Keeper of the House, and his non-stop dedication to fighting the Marlowes, you really need to read HOUSE OF MAGIC and HOUSE OF SECRETS. That’s not a bad thing – if you haven’t read them yet, you’re in for a real treat!
And HOUSE OF DESTINY is every bit as fabulous as the first two books were. One of the most interesting aspects of the novel actually happens fairly early on, when Nori (Chase’s long-lost cousin, discovered in the second book) manages to decipher the strange writing on the Relic. She claims the writing refers to the destinies of the Tinker family members, but she refuses to reveal those destinies. This is infuriating to Chase, of course, but Nori’s argument (that it’s not a good thing to know too much about your own destiny) certainly makes sense. After all, if you know what’s going to happen, do you really have free will? Or does the prophecy itself become self-fulfilling? So throughout the story, Nori’s knowledge (and Chase’s frustration) is there in the background, unspoken but looming all the same. Also exciting is the Tinker family’s fascinating “road-trip” to visit a variety of other magical beings – Haberman takes us into the worlds of fairies, leprechauns, vampires, and witches as Chase and his friends seek help in their war with the Marlowes. And then there’s the ending – well, let’s just say the last few chapters of this novel are a super exciting rush!
HOUSE OF DESTINY is a fast-paced adventure story with enough twists and turns to satisfy any young reader. Chase is a wonderful character – he’s brave and selfless, but he’s also a pretty ordinary teenager who makes mistakes, overreacts, and can’t always trust his own judgment. Persephone is a valiant partner for him – she is no “damsel in distress,” looking for a boy to get her out of trouble. She’s just as courageous and capable as Chase is, and she can get into almost as much trouble. They also make a sweet couple, although their romance (which has been hinted at since the first book) hasn’t quite materialized yet. He clearly likes her, but she might have her eye on someone else. I have no doubt they’ll end up together (you can’t fight destiny, right?), but Haberman is content to let things develop slowly. These are still kids after all, and it’s nice to read a story in which kids really do act like kids.
I totally recommend the CHASE TINKER series – start with HOUSE OF MAGIC and you won’t be able to stop until you’ve finished HOUSE OF DESTINY. And even then you’ll be wanting more, since this particular installment ends with a pretty gripping cliff-hanger. I’ll admit that such endings can be annoying, but Haberman is quite adept at wrapping up enough of the story to keep her readers from going stark raving mad between books. It’s tough with this one, though, and I know I’ll be keeping my eye out for the final volume, CHASE TINKER AND THE HOUSE OF MIST. Write quickly, Ms. Haberman! Write quickly!
[Please note: I was provided a copy of this novel for review; the opinions expressed here are my own.]
It’s been a long while since I read any middle grade fiction, so long in fact that I believe the last one was about a year ago. So I was totally ready for a change to my usual YA reading diet, and Chase Tinker and the House of Destiny, book #3 in the series, turned out to be the perfect read for jumping back into MG.
House of Destiny finds Chase’s mindset in a fairly dark place. He believes he killed his cousin, Janie, after she first attacked his younger brother, Andy. Even though Chase acted to defend his brother, the guilt over what happened with Janie torments him. That’s quite a weight for someone his age to handle, but it’s also spot-on character development for a protagonist who’s going to inherit the duties as Keeper of his family’s magical house one day. We also see the lighter side of Chase’s growing pains, as he struggles to hide his feelings for his friend, Persephone. Our young hero’s list of woes just seems to keep getting longer, with one of his chief worries being the increasing threat the Marlowes pose.
The Tinkers’ foes have now taken to robbing magic from any being who possesses it. To assess the severity of the situation, Chase and company do some traveling in order to observe the damage firsthand. In a nice expansion outside of the Tinker house, the group journeys into the domains of fairies, vampires, witches/wizards/warlocks, and . . . leprechauns! Although the Tinkers’ attempts to rally some allies aren’t all successful, it’s still a cool addition to the series to see them interact with other magical communities.
With the Marlowes at their most diabolical yet, the appearance of one of them, Alexander Marlowe, sends the Tinker house into an uproar. Alex claims he wants nothing to do with all of the evil and is seeking refuge with the Tinkers. This causes no small amount of dissension in the house, with Chase highly suspicious of Alex and vehemently opposed to his presence on Tinker turf. Chase’s cousin Nori, however, takes a liking to Alex and thinks everyone else should cut him a break. I admit to finding Alex quite charming, but that may just be the English accent working its charm (I have such a weakness for those!). Alex was tough to get a read on; I could understand Chase’s point, but Alex also seemed convincingly sincere. The Alex puzzle kept my brain busy throughout the book, and I’m still not certain what to make of him. I will be disappointed if he turns out to be a baddie, though, because I really want to believe he’s on Team Tinker.
I was bummed to reach the end of the book because—cliffhanger! I’m really anxious to know what happens next (like if Alex is evil or not) and can’t wait for the fourth installment. Here’s hoping that Chase and his family end the Marlowes’ campaign to steal every drop of magic in the world, and that the magical newcomers to the series make return appearances in the next book (oh, and let’s not forget to hope that Alex isn’t evil).
I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
What can I say? I can't give away the content if I don't want to spoil the series, but this is, like its predecessors, a super fun book with a lot of action that I would definitely recommend if you like Middle Grade at all!
Oh Chase…what have you gotten yourself into this time?
This installment in the Chase Tinker series brings us even more twists and turns than we’ve seen before. In the beginning Chase is plagued with the loss of someone very near to him and the hidden truth of the event has been eating him alive for months. It is not long until truths are revealed, and unfortunately for Chase things spiral out of his control from there.
This book has a great cast and they work well together. They are the perfect blend snark and fun but always willing to be there for one another. I like the character development we see while Chase deals with all of the obstacles thrown his way.
One thing I really like about this book is the magical world has expanded beyond Chase’s world as we knew it. We get to travel to other realms and are introduced to the other magical beings. It is really neat to see other magical communities and how they relate to the magical world as a whole.
The House of Destiny is book three in a four book series. I could only imagine how hard it would be to write and plot an entire series. But I can tell you that Malia Ann Haberman has done a bang up job. This individual book moves along at a good pace, and the so far the series itself has been paced perfectly. With each book the stakes are raised and the ending keeps me wanting more.
I really look forward the reading the conclusion to this whimsical series. I recommend the read for boys and girls of all ages.
I love this series. Such fun characters. Magical rooms. Fairies. Leprechauns. Vampires. Other Magical Creatures. What is there not to like. Chase and his family must fight the Marlowe Family who uses dark magic. Chase must protect the family magic and the relic, but he's not sure who to trust. I can't wait to read book 4. Thanks, Malia, for a good read.
Chase Tinker and the House of Destiny by Malia Ann Haberman is another book that I will be recommending to friends! Magic and suspense abound in this 3rd book in the Chase Tinker series. I was hooked from the moment I started to read and just could not put this book down! 5 stars!!
Another fun ride into the world of Chase Tinker! Amazingly detailed writing, takes you into the story and it flows perfectly. This has to be the best in the series so far for me. So much action and magic! Can't wait for the next one. I was given this book in exchange for my honest review.
The mysterious house and magic just keeps building and building the storyline up, as the Tinkers lose more and more power over whats going on. I say the storyline already has the answers but the young kids just haven't found the clues. Looking forward to house of mist. Maybe the answers will prove themselves.
Having read the first two books in the series, I have to admit to going in to this one with high expectations. I'm pleased to say I was not disappointed! This was another excellent read.
This is the third book in The Chase Tinker series. I absolutely loved it!
Chase Tinker is a wonderful character and I really liked him from the first time I met him in the first book. I have enjoyed watching his development from a frustrated teen into someone who I would be proud to know.
In this third book, which is told mostly from Chase's point of view though other characters also have their say, Chase is still having to deal with new magical powers that he struggles to control. Not only that, the Marlowe's are still intent on finding the Relic hidden in the attic of the Tinker house. But now one of their own has turned on them too, leading the Tinkers to find assistance from other magical beings. However, there's a problem. The Marlowe's are stealing all the magic and if Chase and his family don't stop them, all will be lost. Can they stop them before it's too late?
This is a wonderful story full of adventure, danger and mystery, and I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat as Chase, Andy, Nori and Persephone face danger once more. There are several twists and turns that keep a reader guessing. I found myself on a roller coaster of emotion from beginning to end. The story is full of imaginative prose that guides the reader in such a way that it runs like a movie in the mind's eye and is easy to picture. I love the way the secrets of the house were revealed and what it means to be a Tinker. I also love the way the characters' grow and develop throughout this series. This book doesn't end with a cliffhanger, but it still left me looking forward to reading the last book in the series, Chase Tinker and the House of Mist, as soon as possible. Though I am dreading it too, as I don't want the series to end.
Malia Ann Haberman has written a entertaining and exciting story for middle grade children. I love her writing style, which is fast paced and imaginative. The flow is wonderful too. I would definitely read more of her books in the future.
I highly recommend this book to middle grade readers aged 9 to 14. However, I also recommend this book (and series) to adults who love reading middle grade fantasy, or to those who are fans of books like Harry Potter. - Lynn Worton
Chase Tinker is back for a third adventure! When two Marlowes (the evil British family that is the arch-enemies of the Tinkers) show up at the Tinker House (a magical house that the Tinkers live in) with a message – Surrender or die. At the end of August, we are coming. – the Tinker family realize that they are out-numbered. They do the only thing that they can think of – go to the magical communities to ask for help. The team of Tinkers taken to see the communities are shocked – the leprechauns’ shillelaghs are useless sticks, and their rainbows are gray; the vampires are all tired and wimpy and lazy; the witches’ and wizards’ wands are just twigs, and they couldn’t make a potion to save their lives (which explains why they can’t save themselves) – all of their magic is gone! The Marlowes are stealing it!
Chase Tinker and the House of Destiny is the third book in the series. Read my review for book 1 HERE and for book 2 HERE. The third book in the series was great! Ms. Haberman knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat! This book is full of action and adventure! I loved the plot (and character) development in the book. It really revealed a lot about the characters. I think that Ms. Haberman has gotten into the minds of her characters really easy and realistically. The vampire section was pretty funny, as were using a “vicious” magical hugging plant as a “torture/interrogation” base. I do think that this book got a bit dark and somewhat depressing at times (especially the ending). At times I got “angry” at Chase for being so arrogant and stubborn, when if he had thought it through, he would’ve realized something (can’t tell you what ;) ). I think this also shows how talented Ms. Haberman is as a writer and really getting the reader involved in the story and how well she gets into her characters’ minds. I can’t wait for book 4!
*NOTE I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Chase Tinker is tired of secrets, especially the one he’s been keeping close to his chest since Halloween. As event more secrets pile up, Chase has had enough and is willing to let everyone know how he feels. Chase was snappy, whiny, and paranoid – alienating both family and friends. Now, Chase had plenty of reason to be paranoid, with the Marlowe family plotting to get their hands on the Tinker house and the Relic. I can also understand Chase’s irritability, with his profound guilt, but sometimes it seemed to go a bit too far. When a Marlowe comes to the Tinkers for aid, Chase is against it from the start, even though the elder magical Tinkers are willing to let him stay. In the meantime, the kids go on a quest to find magical creatures who will help them against the Marlowes. They find it is not only the Tinkers who have been affected by the dark greed of the Marlowe family. CHASE TINKER AND THE HOUSE OF DESTINY continues the magical story of Chase and his fight to save his family. My favorite parts of this book are their quest to find magical allies and how effortlessly the author makes the magic real. There will be another book after this one, which will conclude the series. Once I got to the end of CHASE TINKER AND THE HOUSE OF DESTINY, I needed the next book right away! The best aspects of this series are the family bonds between the Tinkers, as well as watching Chase grow into himself and his powers.
The Chase Tinker books never fail to put a smile on my face when I read them, and Chase Tinker and the House of Destiny was no exception to that rule. This is a really fun middle grade series, and was a perfect read during the Halloween season.
Chase’s portrayal in this book was fantastic. It’s so realistic, he’s probably one of the best-written thirteen-year-old boys I’ve read about. He wants to be the hero, he tries so hard to do the right thing, but still falls short at times, and isn’t afraid of having the occasional hissy fit, particularly when things don’t go his way! I love his friendship with Persephone, although I felt for him at times, as not only is he struggling with his feelings for her, but also the jealousy that comes with her dating another guy. He really came into his own with this book, desperate to find a solution to beat the Marlowes without relying on anyone else’s help, and I really admired him for that.
I didn’t like Nori much in House of Destiny, I will admit. I found her quite rude and annoying at times, and wished she tried to see Chase’s point of view instead of just shooting whatever he said down in flames. She really got under my skin at points, which may have been the point, but still. She annoyed me a lot.
That being said, the ending for House of Destiny was ridiculously cliffhanger-y in all the best ways, and has left me desperately pining for that fourth book. I need to know what happens next. Need. To. Know.
**4 Stars** I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
First I would like to say that when Malia asked me to read this latest in the Chase Tinker series, I was a little disappointed. I thought it was going to be a trilogy and this would be the last book.... BUT, when Malia said that there would be another Tinker book, I was excited and couldn't wait to start reading (I always hate ending a series).
Great. Another huge cliffhanger, and this one is bigger than the last. There was a lot going on in this book. Chase's character was a little more whiney that he has been in the other books, but I didn't mind it so much when reminded of his age. Persephone was great as always. I am very glad that we got to see more of Nori's mom and why she has a huge problem with magic. There was also the addition of Alex to the team. I was with Persephone in her distrust of him throughout the book.
Once again, a lot of the magic seemed "too much." It seems like they can do anything, conjure anything, and it is a little too convenient. However, the integration of magic into the story is great. The whole story of the Shard is facinating and I cannot wait to see the outcome.
I look forward to the last installment in the Chase Tinker series.
Editing: 5 stars Story: 4 stars (keep in mind this is for YA audiences, which I am not)
I totally failed at reviewing this book in any sort of timely manner - so I'd like to start with an apology to the author. What took my so long? Well, unfortunately I am an adult and life gets in the way. In this case, pregnancy (no one tells you how hard it is). Anyway, life rant over.
I stalled for months and months and months at 75% because I just couldn't stand the wild goose chase or Chase's (frankly, everyone's) attitudes in this book! It was pretty much constant bickering and not a whole lot of progress. That said, had I just read one more chapter, the action would have swooped in and saved me from my own misery. Boy, does it get interesting really fast!
There is quite a bit of mystery in this book, though the villains are still the same. I liked bringing in the new character, I like that the hero(es) aren't always right and have to learn things the hard way (well, I liked that most of the time...), and of course I love the magic!
This book does have quite a cliff hanger at the end, so be prepared to read #4!
