What a lovely book! I loved the viewpoint and photos from the 80s, seeing the trail in its not yet complete days and still facing similar threats 35 years later. A must have for any AT hiker’s collection.
Published in 1988, this older book has wonderful photos of the trail in various seasons, a good history of the trail, which in 1988 was celebrating its 50th year (not the 100th as a few other reviewers mistakenly stated), and great anecdotes of the author's time hiking the trail himself. I know times have changed, especially in that the author several times uses words from old hymns to illustrate the feelings from the trail. That probably wouldn't fly in a National Geographic book any longer. An enjoyable read.
This book was a gift from my mom, who found it in a library throwaway pile, and I'm glad she did! "Mountain Adventure" was published in the late 1980s by the National Geographic Society in honor of the 100th anniversary of the AT; as such, in addition to awesome photos of the landscape of the AT, the book is chock-full of photos of "old school" backpacking gear. While I love our modern clothing, packs, and tent--which have kept me and Nick warm and dry during some cold and rainy adventures--the pictures from "Mountain Adventure" were a nice reminder that you really don't need much to enjoy the outdoors. In addition to great pictures, "Mountain Adventure" covers quite a bit of trail history, including stories of the volunteers who have maintained the trail over the years, as well as, of course, the hikers themselves, particularly thru-hikers. This book made me miss living on the East Coast!
Mountain Adventure: Exploring the Appalachian Trail by Ronald M. Fisher (National Geographic Society 1988) (917.4). This was published in honor of and to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of the Appalachian Trail. It's the usual outstanding volume by the National Geographic Society. My rating: 7/10, finished 2005.
This was a fun book with lots of nice nature pictures in it that Elise's mom picked up for us at a library remainders table. Although we won't be on the AT, it made me look forward to the 2014 hiking season!
