Scritto male, tradotto male, sviluppato male. Interesse da parte mia nullo. 2 stelle risicate.

Mild-mannered reporter Joe Karns doesn't know what debunker Silas Tucker wants with him, but he isn't too surprised to find Tucker dead when he knocks on the hotel room door. Strange things always seem to happen to Karns. He is surprised by the strange people gathering around the door as he waits for the police; his photographic memory doesn't have anything in it about science fiction conventions or the people who read science fiction. Kay Clarke, a folksinger, must explain this subculture to Karns, and also explain that Tucker thought that Karns had some kind of extrasensory perception. Clarke herself can detect certain emotional surges, that seem to be associated with a series of mysterious deaths marked, like Tucker's, by the murderer disappearing. Wonderfully funny.

I had never read this predecessor to Charles Fort Never Mentioned Wombats back in the day, but after I re-read that recently I decided to look up this one as well. I think I like CFNMW a bit better, but this light-hearted mulitple-murder mystery set around a science-fiction convention of the early '70s is a fun read. DeWeese and Coulson evoke the characters and the spirit well, and it's nice to see how some of the same principals got their start.

Now You See It/Him/Them and its sequel, Charles Fort Never Mentioned Wombats (one of the greatest titles ever!), featured the adventures of a reporter, Joe Karnes, in science fiction/mysteries set in the world of mid-'70s science fiction fandom. He was accompanied by filker Kay Clarke and many thinly-disguised fannish personalities of the day. They're a lot of fun and fast to read.
