The Evaran Chronicles #1-3

The Evaran Chronicles: Books I, II & III

Rate this book
Reality is sometimes not what it appears to be.

Dr. Albert Snowden just wanted to be there for his niece, Emily, after the loss of her father. Being abducted by aliens, and then rescued by a mysterious being known as Evaran, has made that difficult. Despite their situation, they try to make the best of it while traveling through space, time, and beyond with Evaran and V, Evaran's trusty mobile artificial intelligence. With the use of Evaran’s time-traveling ship, the Torvatta, they will try to maintain timeline integrity while dealing with the challenges that brings.

This box set contains the first three books in the Evaran Chronicles.

The Awakening - Book 1 of the Evaran Chronicles
A heavily damaged alien research vessel in the Andromeda galaxy is hurtling toward a planet. The aliens should not be there. They have been traveling through space and time, abducting apex predators and sticking them in virtual simulations for research. The problem is the virtual simulations are powering down, unleashing the specimens on the ship.
Dr. Albert Snowden and his niece, Emily, were abducted by the aliens. They are visited by a mysterious being named Evaran in the last minutes of the virtual simulation. He has decided to interfere in this timeline-changing event and rescue them.
Stopping the ship from crashing into the planet before getting to Evaran's ship is one issue. Navigating the apex predators on the loose is another. To make matters worse, Jerzan Graduul, infamous leader of the Bloodbore mercenary pack, has boarded the ship in search of salvage opportunities, and has noticed Evaran's ship. The hunt begins.

The Fredorian Destiny - Book 2 of the Evaran Chronicles
The timeline is wrong. This is discovered when Dr. Albert Snowden and his niece, Emily, travel with Evaran to a galactic cultural exhibition event on Kreagus, the capital home world of the Kreagan Star Empire and galactic superpower near Earth. The Fredorians should be presenting an ancient artifact, known as the Arkaron, to the Kreagan emperor. The problem is they aren’t. Evaran has decided to step in and help the Fredorians achieve their destiny while stabilizing the timeline.
They must find the three lost Arkaron crystals in order to assemble the Arkaron. To make matters worse, Seeros, a powerful industrialist, has a bounty on their heads, causing bounty hunters to harass them each step of the way.
As if that weren’t enough, an unknown faction is hiring freelance mercenaries to hunt them down as well. Evaran is joined by others, and together, they will have to navigate these perils to assemble the Arkaron and achieve the Fredorian destiny.

The Purification - Book 3 of the Evaran Chronicles
The past has changed, and the timeline has been updated.
Dr. Albert Snowden, and his niece, Emily, experience this while traveling on Evaran’s temporally shielded space-and-time traveling ship. What they discover is that humanity has taken a different path, one that has made Evaran decide to interfere and change human history.
Discovering what caused the change is one issue. Dealing with the nonhuman factions in Earth’s past is another.
To make things worse, Dr. Snowden has to deal with a personal issue. It does not help that Emily is on a prison planet where she must survive, alone

It is a passion of mine now, and exploring my setting with it has been an awesome journey.

I work in the information technology field and have my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in it. It has helped me to shape some of the concepts I write about. I also enjoy keeping up on futurology and science in general.

These books have the best world building, no matter what world, characters, dialogue, intriguing plots, and excellent fun along their journeys. Love this series.
Book 1
The Awakening is a very imaginative exciting sci-fi book that I could not stop reading once I started. A handful of people are abducted by aliens but are in a deep sleep and think they are living their lives as normal, kinda Matrix-like. The ship they are one is damaged and someone comes to tell them the truth to prepare them for the awakening to the real world. The main characters are Emily and her uncle Dr Snowden. They meet others people onboard but also other species that have been abducted. The band battles a failing ship, crazy creatures, then bad guys (of course!). The guy who is trying to save them is well known and feared in the galaxies as one not to mess with but it doesn't stop some hard core mercenaries coming to attack. The book is fast paced, characters well developed, very imaginative, creative, has lots of surprises, and plot well planned. I enjoyed this book completely and look forward to more from this author.
Book 2
The Fredorian Destiny by Adair Hart is another great sci-fi/fantasy novel, second in the series but can be read as a stand alone. This continues from where Evaran (alien that saved them in book one) comes back to talk to Dr Snowden and Emily and takes them again on a trip. This trip they end up on a mission to find the crystals. Of course they are not without trouble along the way, bounty hunters, creatures, elements of all kinds. This book, like the first, still has the crazy and imaginative wonder of new worlds, time travel, weird adventures, crazy twists, turns, creatures, and plot. The characters have stayed true from last book. The may be a little less fight scenes and a bit more sleuthing from the last book but not much. Although I do enjoy his fight scenes with the crazy creatures and strange weapons they have. Never dull. Enjoyed it as I did the first book! Don't wait to start this series, it is a hoot!
Book 3
The Purification: Book 3 of the Evaran Chronicles by Adair Hart is book three in the series but can be read as a stand alone. It is another exciting book with the intriguing alien Evaran who has allowed Dr Snowden and his niece to come on his travels. The space-time traveling ship alone is so unique a whole book could be written on just it. One this adventure, Emily is captured and put on an alien planet through a rift so there is no telling where she was sent. She is on a planet alone with very imaginative creatures and beings/situations and keep the reader on the edge of their seat. A real page turner. Meanwhile, Dr Snowden deals with his own issues. Evaran is trying to track her down. There are multiple other issues ensuing! Chaos! Suspense, excitement, intrigue, action, adventure, twists, surprises, and more. Loved this book, heck, I have loved the whole series! These should be a mini-series on TV or movies! A must read for sci-fi fans/fantasy fans!

This is a collection of Books 1-3 of the Evaran Chronicles, and includes ‘The Awakening’, ‘Fredorian Destiny’ and ‘Purification’. This is a fantastic set for anyone who has not read the series, or is a fan of the series and wants the collection. Following are reviews of all three books:
1: The Awakening:
This is the story of Dr Snowden and his niece Emily, who have been abducted by aliens and taken aboard a huge starship. The thing is, they have no idea, as they were taken and placed in a holographic reality in which time dilates and passes slower for them. As such, they have continued to live on with their normal lives. This is until one day, a stranger arrives called Evaran. He tells them that what has happened, and that the ship they are on has been damaged and that they are in danger. They have been left in the ship along with a multitude of other species that have also been abducted. I don’t want to give away too much, but the adventure that unfolds as Dr Snowden, Emily, Evaran, and the others they meet along the way is truly amazing. Hart has written a fantastic Sci-fi book that is a brilliant read, full of thrilling adventure, exceptional characters and some really outstanding writing.
This is a really fun and engaging story, just what good Sci-Fi should be.
If you want a great story that is easy to read, this is definitely worth the read.

2: The Fredorian Destiny
The 2nd of the Evaran Chronicles see Emily and Dr Snowden having been dropped at home for 3 months while Evaran was off doing other things. He returns to check on them, and Dr Snowden asks if they can travel with him, and Evaran says yes, happy to have some travelling companions, and someone to show the universe. We also learn that Jay has made a full recovery and is doing well.
Although these are called the Evaran Chronicles, the story is mainly told from the point of view of Dr Snowden, so it is Dr Snowden’s story of his time with Evaran. This gives the story an interesting perspective as Evaran is obviously incredibly advanced, with knowledge, technology and abilities beyond normal comprehension, and this way, we get to learn it from Dr Snowden’s viewpoint, as well as an easy way to explain it to the reader.
These stories are like a cross between Dr Who and Star Trek, there is that real feel of Evaran being similar to some sort of incredibly powerful being (such as the Time Lords), who has dominion over space and time. At the same time, there are these multiple ‘away’ missions, with that feel from Star Trek. It makes for a really easy read, with some fascinating scenarios. The really interesting thing in these stories is Hart’s description of the technology and the physics surrounding space and time, and the various concepts of travel related to these. Hart has done some fascinating research to bring these facets of her story to life, adding a new dimension to the story, and making it that much more enjoyable.
There are many features of ‘Chronicles’ that work to make it a wonderful read though, and another of these is the Characters. Hart’s characters are all incredibly well written, each with a different aspect that kind of fit together to make this piece of the puzzle – Dr Snowden is the curious one, and also the Father figure for Emily, Emily is the emotional gauge of the group, Evaran is the overall Guardian. It is a very interesting Dynamic, and each ‘Mission’ tends to see new additions to their group adding further aspects to it. This gives Hart an endless supply of character qualities and combinations to play with and makes for very interesting reading.
In the 2nd story, the main story (without breaking the Prime Directive – No Spoilers sorry), is that after Emily and Albert (Dr Snowden) decide to go for a trip, they find themselves entangled in a series of events in which they must help retrieve something, something that will help all of humanity. This leads to a slew of different missions throughout the galaxy and amazingly enough… Well you will have to read it to find out more. On top of that, there is a sinister plot unfolding in the background, someone wants Evaran, as well as Emily and Dr Snowden.
This is an awesome adventure story, very easy to read and a lot of fun.
If you are a fan of Dr Who, or like a good Sci-Fi adventure story, this is definitely for you.

3: Purification
In the third evolution of the Evaran Chronicles, the team become aware that time has altered around them, but of course they are safe aboard the Torvatta. They suddenly find that the universe has been changed, and that Humans have evolved quite differently. Humanity is a xenophobic race, fully intent on purifying the galaxy of all aliens.
What follows is of course another exceptional tale, similar in vain to Star Trek or Dr Who. Along the way (without giving away too much), Emily is separated from the main group, and lost on a prison planet that is through a time dilation portal, meaning that time passes much quicker for her that the rest of the team. This puts Emily in some very real danger for the first time in the Evaran Chronicles, and this made the book a lot more interesting this time around.
There were a lot of new and interesting characters in ‘The Purification’, Hart had a great time creating some brilliant and outstanding characters that really brought the story to life, not only telling the story, but captivating the reader and drawing us into it.
Hart also has a lot of fun with the science and technology of the stories, inventing some incredible and amazing gadgets for Evaran and the crew. This technology adds a level of fun to the story and allows for some interesting scenes. The other aspect is the science, in which Hart has made a real effort to research some fascinating and captivating information about the universe, time travel and just in general, again, making this a fascinating read that is really creative.
Overall, Purification is easily the best of the three Evaran books so far as it has a bit more of an edge, a lot more character development and a really exciting story. This is really worth the read.

This is a brilliant series, well worth buying individually, let alone as this fantastic collection. For anyone who is a fan of Dr Who or Star Trek, you will love this series.

Evaran a time travelling alien who picks up people (let's call them.... companions) and brings them onto his "bigger on the inside" space ship to travel throughout the universe solving problems in history. As has been mentioned in a few other reviews this is effectively a rip off of Doctor Who. Not even a well disguised ripoff. And not an overly interesting on either.

Add to that the first book actually has almost none of the promised time travel adventures. It's a straight up "we are trapped on this ship with aliens and have to fight them to get out" story. How the humans get trapped on the ship is told in a bland re-telling by another character, because the humans don't actually remember. It badly fails the "show, don't tell" idea. The next two books pick up in terms of story, involving some time travel hijinks and adventures.

The writing itself is generally bland. Easy to follow by hardly engaging. 20 minutes after reading a section I had already forgotten most of it, beyond the broad strokes, because nothing was memorable. No clever writing. No real sense of urgency or excitement to the events, and no tension building elements like foreshadowing. It was just.... beige. At no point did I care about any of the characters, and any deaths or injuries were met with a muted lack of response from me.

Michael Pauley does okay with the narration. He does voices and emotes well for the characters. His pacing is generally good although in places feels off. At times he sounds really bored, but I'm not 100% sure that isn't me projecting onto the narration. It probably would have been a 3/5.

The thing that really drags the work down is the sound production. It is all over the place. There is music... sometimes (in some action scene there was 'action' music behind it, to make it more tense. But that only occurred one and the practice was dropped, not to be used again in the book). There is sound effects... sometimes. It's all applied unevenly, with no apparent rhyme or reason. And then there is distortion effects added to some character voices. Some work, but most don't. The one that really stood out for me was an Emperor (I think) who had a weird echo effect added. I assume it was supposed to make him sound powerful but all it dd was was make him sound like he was a long was away and sound rather ridiculous.

At first glance, a mysterious alien allowing a couple of humans to accompany him on his time machine through a series of crazy adventures sounds rather like Doctor Who, but a lot of the interactions throughout these books serves to put some distance between them and that iconic series.

While the titular hero, Evaran, shares a number of traits with the Doctor, he also tends to indulge in actual violence more often when the situation requires it and throughout the book there is more use of time travel mechanics to deal with an issue e.g. going back a few years so that the people you met had time to discuss something and reach a decision in time for them to be of help. The companions of Evaran are Dr Snowden and his niece Emily and throughout these books they both developed as characters far more than Evaran who remained the mysterious super alien throughout.

The narrator of this book nicely enhanced the stories, giving a strong performance for all the main characters, ensuring they were all sufficiently distinctive.

Overall, these were an enjoyable set of books and I would be interested in reading more of their adventures in the future.

This series wanted to be good, it really did. The plot blurbs sounded interesting to me: Aliens, time travel, adventure, etc. But there were many problems with the writing, the most glaring being the dialogue. Pretty important in novels, right? The dialogue was atrocious and impossible to get around. Unacceptable. And despite being 700+ pages, the characters were not as deep as a rain puddle. Any of the main characters could have been obliterated and I would not have cared. Some of the other reviews I’ve read claim this series was nothing more than a rip off of “Dr. Who.” I’ve never seen or read any “Dr. Who,” so I don’t know. I wouldn’t be surprised, there was very little here to like, but I stuck with it to the end even after it turned into more of a chore than fun. So no more books from Adair Hart. Not recommended.

Book 3 was not as good as Books 1 & 2. In Book 3, there was so much "relieved herself" and "smells feces" everywhere. I understand the need to be realistic, but doing it more than once is already far too much.

Strictly once is enough as it established the character is still an organic being that needs to do their organic stuff. And as for "smells feces", other than it was overused, it could've been expressed as a generic ugly smell, it doesn't have to be specific—we already know organic lifeforms in their universe also do №1 and №2.

Lastly, I don't understand the need to always mention they're eating breakfast or drinking coffee or tea everytime the conference room is mentioned. If the objective was to establish how the set up was casual despite it being the "conference room", the readers already understood it the first two times it was mentioned in each book.

This author has a very fertile imagination!

I almost gave up half-way through the first segment of the Evaran Chonicles. From my perspective, something was missing from the participants psyches: Depth and nuances...

Yet the plot was fascinating and well fleshed out. It took me a while to get used to the minutiously detailed, quasi-robotic writing style of the author. But once I got used to it, I truly enjoyed the story. The author’s bubbling imagination compensates for its lack of psychological depth and nuances.

I give it a solid 5 stars for its sci-fi originality, and 3 stars for its lyricism.

Narrator is one of the best I’ve ever listened to. He does an absolutely amazing job. This story is going to stay with me forever.
I think this is part Dr Who, Legends of Tomorrow and Guardians of the Galaxy but not as much humor. The characters and plot are so well thought out.
I will definitely look for more by the author and the narrator.
This series would be appropriate for teens. No harsh language or situations that would be risqué for them.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the publisher/author but voluntarily give my honest review.

Evaran Chronicles

I only gave this 4 stars because my poor mind got lost in the various aspects of time travel. I was actually surprised that the author allowed Emily to go from never hurt anything to sometimes killing is necessary. We live in a rather protected time compared to much of history and often can't comprehend (or refuse to) how life and death decisions are sometimes made for protection of life.

Okay. I really wanted to enjoy this. And I am trying my best to plow my way through it, and I am mostly done with book 2.
But the writing style is kind of...how can I put this, procedural, clunky, naive maybe.

A does B
B goes over to C
B gets a glass of water
C says something
A watches C contemplate something.
And so on.

It's like if an AI from around 10 years ago(so around 2015) was tasked with writing a story, action by action.

There's interesting enough stuff, but it's all a bit wishy-washy, sterile and a touch childish for me.

It probably doesn't help that my previous read was the excellent "The first 15 lives of Harry August" by Claire North, which is rich, descriptive and hugely original.

This writing (for me at least) pales in comparison unfortunately.

I will (try to) finish the 3 books I bought as a pack, but at least so far, I have found little to persuade me to continue after that.

*edit.
When I had finished the second book I stopped.
It just isn't pleasant for me to read unfortunately.
Maybe others will feel different...

Ovarian most mighty

Fun read lots of action and new places to visit. Interesting evil doers and good doers also. Even misty eyed in a couple spots. So overall well worth the time to read. My only real objection to the story is the almost consistent misuse of the word "smirk" I type with a smirk on my face.

A bit long winded

I thought the books could have been shorter with no difference in the outcome. I'm hoping the future books are a bit less wordy but I think they could be better than the first three.

A very enjoyable space-time adventure.

I enjoyed this novel and it was well worth my time to read it . However I do have one griped. The use of the word smirk . There are 238 synonyms for the word smirk and I wish the author had used some of them .

Time & space adventure

Some of the concepts about time and the multi-verse were interesting but I think the book should be classified as fantasy rather than science fiction. I did like that each volume was a complete story.

Good story, but if I had a dollar for every time someone either “drew their lips flat” or “jerked their head back” I could buy enough books to read for a year. I don’t even know what someone looks like with flat drawn lips.

“The Evaran Chronicles Box Set: Books 1-3”, written by Adair Hart and narrated by Michael Pauley, contains three of the four currently released books in the Evaran Chronicles series. The three books in this set could be read as standalone stories. However, they are much better if one reads them in sequence as each book plays off the others. There is also a very good prequel available which I would highly recommend because it adds additional content to the series. I was very happy I read it first. As others stated in their reviews, the series is a blending of Star Trek, Dr. Who (mainly), The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and Quantum Leap; which in my opinion is not a bad thing. If you have enjoyed any of these type of shows, I believe you will like this rather lengthy series consisting of ~707 pages or just shy of 26 hours of audio.

The books could be classified as a lighter science fiction space/time travel opera. The stories take the reader on a rollercoaster ride of action, adventure, emotional highs and lows, along with several strange worlds. Even though the books are like others in the science fiction genre, the author does a fabulous job of creating unique and interesting worlds and creatures that inhabit them. We also are introduced to some new ships and technology not seen in other books of its type. Evaran, like in the prequel, is a selfless creature doing what he can to protect the innocent from those that would desire to do them harm. He is soft spoken, but as with Dr. Who, nearly every creature in the multiverse fears being on his bad side.

At times the book can be confusing due to the element of time travel, but the author does a decent job of keeping the reader engaged so this is less an issue than with other books. I also like that the author included both a prologue and epilogue for each of the books helping tie the series together. I found the updates given to ‘V’ over time an interesting part of the story as one would think that a time traveler would have already included those functions from the start; but I liked the additions. I thought the use of nanobots and how they were used along with their effects refreshing; and even more interesting is how some of the book’s characters embraced them.

I enjoyed the subtle audio enhancements added to the books like introduction music at each chapter, some lighter injected sound effects, and computerized voice of the robot; V. The narrator did an exceptional job of differentiating the book’s various characters which can be difficult for such an extensive set of books. The audio was clean as I did not notice any artifacts while listening; no swallows, no volume issues, no page turns, etc. Michael Pauley is no veteran to audiobook narration with over 215 books at the time of this review, and he does a fantastic job with this series as well.

I would highly caution young readers as each of the books contain vulgar language that may not be appropriate for all ages. There are some scenes containing more adult humor and sexual subjects involving aliens and a few innuendoes. The strong language is rather consistent throughout the books, but the sexual content is not as prevalent or in one’s face.

After listening to the prequel and the first three books in the series, I will be listening to the fourth book, along with any others in the series as they become available, because they are well-written and narrated books that nearly anyone could pick up and enjoy. I wish the author had used less vulgarity as I could see the series being enjoyed by a younger audience if this were the case.
