Jeffrey Brown's reimagining of the Star Wars universe has delighted adult fans and young Jedi alike. This new adult coloring book is equally fun to share, featuring a careful translation of artwork from the bestselling Darth Vader and Son™ series to a large-format collection on crisp white paper, plus nine new images to color.
Jeffrey Brown was born in 1975 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and grew up reading comic books with dreams of someday drawing them, only to abandon them and focus on becoming a 'fine artist.' While earning his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Brown abandoned painting and began drawing comics with his first autobiographical book 'Clumsy' in 2001. Since then he's drawn a dozen books for publishers including TopShelf, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, McSweeney's and Chronicle Books. Simon & Schuster published his latest graphic memoir 'Funny Misshapen Body.' In addition to directing an animated video for the band Death Cab For Cutie, Brown has had his work featured on NPR's 'This American Life' His art has been shown at galleries in New York, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles and Paris. Jeffrey's work has also appeared in the Best American Comics series and received the Ignatz Award in 2003 for 'Outstanding Minicomic.' He currently lives in Chicago with his wife Jennifer and their son Oscar.
Need more of a review than that? Okay . . . Darth Vader and Family Coloring Book, which I received for review through Goodreads First Reads, is a collection of illustrations mostly taken from Jeffrey Brown's Darth Vader and Son books, repurposed as a coloring book. If you're familiar with Brown's earlier books, you know how charming his work can be. He finds plenty of humor in putting Vader in various domestic situations involving adorably youthful versions of Luke and Leia. The pictures chosen for the coloring book are often more "cute" than "funny," but it's enjoyable throughout. (For long-term Star Wars fans, there's also a lot of fun to be had spotting Easter eggs from throughout the saga.)
As previously noted, the artwork comes mainly from the Darth Vader and Son books, translated to black-and-white drawings and supplemented by several new pieces by Brown. The images drawn specifically for the coloring book seem a little sharper, but they're all serviceable. Each piece of art is printed on a single side of the page, so none of the pages have art to color on both sides.
The book includes a good selection of images, with many of the illustrations being more elaborate pieces that offer a more engaging coloring experience. In addition, it appears that at least a couple of the comparatively simpler pieces have been given added details for this release.
Even if one isn't interested in coloring in the book, it's a fine showcase for Brown's cartooning skills.
I received this book from Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review...
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was exciting to receive this in the mail (as was my 7-year-old too). It is a fun book, that is great and perfect for sharing between adults and children alike. It is a great size and would make a delightful gift for anyone. Highly recommended!
