Kind of silly, but a good some good quotes and thoughts to walk away with. It ended with "we don't really think Machiavelli applies" but probably should have kicked off with "what can you learn, not how you should act.
Such a nice short book about the legendary authors on war and authority, taking those lessons into the 21th century, comparing to corporate worlds. I also appreciate the small sarcasm on Machiavelli’s comparison to modern world: “Since nowadays it’s a bit harsh to eliminate the people causing trouble…” and so on :) I’d definitely recommend this book also to people who have already read the books of Sun Tzu and Machiavelli, it’s always good to have a refresher from time to time. And this is a good one for that. I presume the bit lower rating it has is because of the Author NOT criticizing Machiavelli about the dark tones, but protecting his ideas openly, calling it pragmatism: let’s not talk what the world ought to be, but what it is.
Succinct summary of the ideas of both Sun Tzu and Machiavelli. Thought it was a good perspective the author had that while in general, people associate Machiavelli with callousness, brutality, etc but i do agree that Machiavelli is simply stating things as it is (the cold hard truth) about mankind and therefore the way to thrive. We don’t necessarily subscribe to everything that Machiavelli states but it will be foolish to completely ignore it too. I thought the summary of the key ideas of Sun Tzu, 5 faults, etc are useful for reflection….one thing the book can improve on, is having less typo…..
I like the fact that the strategies mentioned in the book can be applied in real life situations. In addition, the book detailed the similarities and differences of Sun Tzu and Machiavelli’s approach in leadership.
I’m thankful that Mr. Sloan broke out the differences and similarities from both Sun Tzu and Machiavelli as leaders. There is a lot to take away from this book.
Very good book. Captures main points of each book and translate it into modern practice. Very insightful for anyone wishing to take on a leadership role.
Sun Tzu and Niccolo Machiavelli are both great political figures that deserve its own book and interpretation for today's world. The topic is very interesting and keeps you captivated, but for some reason the author decided to make is as short as possible. I believe there is still a lot of room to dig in.
