I grew up in Boston, MA, and got an electrical engineering degree from M.I.T. I then worked at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) for a time, then got my PhD in Physiology, and did a post-doctoral fellowship at the Laboratory of Neuropsychology at the NIH. Since 1996 I have been on the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in the Department of Vision Sciences. My primary research interest is in the nature of the neural code, and the physical basis of human thought. I live with my wife Adrienne and an Australian Shepherd named "Ginger" and a strange mutt named "Proton." I have a son who works as an engineer in Vandenberg Air Force base in CA, and a daughter who teaches English in Japan. My hobbies are carpentry, tinkering with electronics, and making plants die.
This is part of a series of five books about cybertanks in the far future. The author expresses many political and social opinions which I enjoyed even when I didn't necessarily agree. His humor is great and I really hope he writes some more. They are quick to read, amusing and you want to read more. What more can you ask for?
This is an interesting collection of mini-stories. Each so called chapter can stand alone, yet are consistent in following each other. Every one is captivating and makes you want more. Definitely a two thumbs up.
These are very readable, very entertaining books. They are "page-turners" that hold one's interest. There are no deep, philosophical meanings or nail-biting cliff-hangers, just good old fashioned story telling!
Hopefully this isn't the last book in this series. There are a lot of unanswered questions that we'd all love to have answered.
Despite there being only ONE biological human (ok, "super" human and the vampire is a cousin of humanity) as a recurring character, this book provides yet more layers of what it means to be human, to have to make the hard choice between what is the easy choice and what is the right choice.
The series returns to its roots, telling random tales from the life of Old Guy. Thematically, these tales are about sacrifice, loss, and forgiveness, and how this can allow both parties to grow. Mostly Old Guy bumbles around getting into trouble and escaping through luck, firepower, sneakiness, and friends.
