The Scholastic Read-Aloud Anthology: 35 Short, Riveting Read-Alouds That Build Comprehension, Listening, and Higher-Level Thinking Skills―and Keep Kids on the Edge of Their Seats
You'll reach for this collection of kid-pleasing read alouds again and again. Each short selection will grab kids' attentions, build vocabulary, as well as comprehension, listening, and high-level thinking skills. They are also a great way to introduce kids to genres such as poetry, short story, speeches, expository writing, and more. All have been carefully selected by noted author and educator Janet Allen. For use with Grades 5 & Up.
I wouldn't say that these stories are exactly "riveting." In fact, quite a few of the stories are incredibly mediocre, and there's a good amount of typos. So that was disappointing.
I did, however, find lots of stories I want to use with my 6th graders, and there are some gems peppered throughout this anthology.
I bought this thinking I would use it in my classroom, but when the book arrived, I as disappointed and thought the selections were too young and random for my students. When I started my practicum this summer, I took too heart the suggestion to read aloud often and looked to this book. In all, I read six of the pieces to my students over the 15 days. They worked out really well. The on-fiction pieces allowed us to look at some study skills and the fiction were just enjoyable. We had some nice discussion with most of them. If I were returning to the classroom I would use this book. My only complaint is that a couple of them are too long to use since I would not want to break them up over several days.
