Fabulous Death #1

Death Wears Purple Lip Gloss

Rate this book
For twenty-two-year-old Gina lying is just the price of keeping the peace. Sure, secrets are hard to keep from a close-knit family and her therapist is certain they’re materializing in the form of her irrational fear of coffins and night terrors. Lying doesn’t come easy for her, but it’s better to have a quiet life than to be thrown into the rumor mill of her small hometown. Everything changes when she meets the glossy-lipped Gizmo at her uncle’s funeral. From the moment Gizmo first asks her for a light Gina’s life is turned upside down. She’s drawn to the mysterious girl who seemingly bends time and space to suit her needs, but won’t disclose her real name. Gizmo breathes a sense of reckless freedom into Gina, but at what cost? It’s not long before Gina discovers Gizmo has secrets of her own and if she’s not careful they may just be the death of her. 18+ for sexual content and mature language.

Avery Taylor Adams is the author of several novels, mostly lesbian fiction. She was born in the Appalachia Foothills, where many of her books take place. She's lived all over the east coast and in parts of the Midwest. She currently calls home whichever room her pup, Daryl, is in.

When she's not writing (and let's face it, that isn't often) she enjoys hanging out with her closest friends, reading, binge-streaming her favorite shows, and an active spiritual practice of eclectic paganism. She also has a very difficult time figuring out what she does with all of her time, hence, not much is listed here. So, she must write more than she thinks. :P

She recently came out of her last major closet and now collects an excessive amount of pride gear for both her and the pup!

I happened across this story and thought it sounded interesting enough to take a look. This is not a perfect book but there is some good here that I appreciated. I also have an inkling that other readers may enjoy it more than I did so I encourage others to check it out.

Gina is a young twenty-two year old in-the-closet lesbian living in a conservative town with a fundamentalist religious mother. She happens across a mysterious stranger, Gizmo, at a funeral and things take off from there...

Think of this story as an unconventional paranormal romance with some comedy. It's not quite the usual love story we find in lesfic which may or may not disappoint (don't worry, though, no bait and switch with a man or anything)...There is explicit sexual content, light character development, nothing too deep but it did get more dramatic than I would've thought...just a short interlude in the life of Gina, really.

What I liked? I found the premise to be interesting and the paranormal reveals were craftily executed. How the author indicated that something wasn't quite right was really well done and when the full reveal does happen I thought it was imaginative and clever. I favored Gizmo's character and I wasn't able to guess exactly what Gizmo was until she actually explained. I also thought the comedy landed well. We don't often get a truly religious mother (or family) in lesfic that stand by their beliefs and I liked having that story told. Oh, and my fav, this is the first time I've ever read someone introducing and then taking a bat to insta-love. Yes!

What holds it back for me is that the book could definitely use some polishing. A few editorial mistakes are here and there and, story-wise, the gift Gina receives later in the book didn't seem necessary (or came from nowhere). Gina's character seemed inconsistent to me at times, too...and, don't quote me on this because I've forgotten all lessons from my high school English classes, but I think the book is mainly written in 3rd person present tense which is unusual and I found somewhat awkward to read.

Overall, though, not bad. I like it enough to check out the next novella in this series.

I read this in one sitting when I couldn't sleep, it's a quick easy read, it flows really well. At first I had wished it were longer, that it went more in depth with the main character, scenes, and story, but I think the author actually formatted it perfectly for it's length. I loved Gina and Gizmo, they were very organic. A few typos and accidental shifts with past and present tense, but nothing a quick last run through of edits couldn't fix. Lots of little bits and pieces with this that tugged at my heartstrings and connections that were just perfect, some really excellent lines in here too. I definitely recommend it.

This book has a fantastic plot and great character development. You may like it like I did and find characters you love and others you just want to slap in the back of the head, but for me that's part of a great book. I think this story was great and it gets even better if you read it a few times and catch the funny quotes and clues given by the characters. I'd read it and find out for yourself. I'm sure you'll see what I mean and see why I just love this book.
