Riding with the Hides of Hell

Rate this book
"It's always trouble with you."
While grieving the death of his mother, Will Sullivan, sixteen, drinks, drives, and lands his butt in the hospital, lucky to be alive. Enter his dad’s buddies from the Hides of Hell Motorcycle Club. They’ve got big ideas about biker therapy, and leaving Will stuck in his rut isn’t one of ‘em. Get ready to ride. Unfortunately, Will is teamed up with the prez’s daughter, the troublesome Miki, and playing passenger on her bike, holding onto her at every curve, is gearing up to be the ultimate nightmare.

"Hop on!"
Miki Holtz isn’t some bubblegum chewing high schooler who only cares about her blue hair and the chips in her pink nails. She wants to be a mechanic so she can fit into her dad’s life, and to make a love connection with her soul crush, Will Sullivan. Yeah, her speed is fast, and his is slow. She’s a mover and a shaker while he’s oddly attached to his peach floral couch. But things are about to change. She might be riding the tail pipes of the pack, but she’ll be driving her own wheels. Will had better hang on and the tighter the better. Hell, yeah!

"I don't like the way you like me."
The ride gets off to a tenuous start when one bad decision follows another, and their rivals, the Pulver Skulls, take notice from the shadows. Nothing good will come of it.

Riding with the Hides of Hell is a gritty young adult romance set in fictional small towns throughout the Pacific Northwest. It’s about a strong girl and a moody boy finding love on a road trip from hell.

I really enjoyed this book and its characters, Will and Miki. Will has a lot of healing to do after his mom was killed a year earlier. And Miki has to deal with her own issues with her father, who's the president of the biker club Will's dad and brother are also in. When the two of them get roped into going on a long ride a rally, it's going to be interesting because Will just wrecked his bike and is all banged up and Miki going to be his ride. And they have some awkward history, even though they've known each other forever and have liked each other for much of that. Then all hell breaks loose, and we get to see both of them being industrious and. Miki in particular turns out to be tough and able to look after herself. This is a rewarding story of adventure and healing.

I really liked both Will and Miki. Will was completely relatable, right down to his frustrations with the club. His grief and what he was going through felt very realistic and it was easy to sympathize with him. Miki was pretty cool, too. Her anger at the misogyny and hypocrisy of the club was nice, although it's pointless since she never acts on it. Which is part of why the book stumbles. Besides Will journey to let go of his mom, there's no story satisfaction. Miki doesn't really stand up to her brother or dad and the club is never punished for their actions. With the exception of Will, everyone kind of ends where they started.

Burnout is a little outside of my normal genre prefrence, but I very much enjoyed it. Miki Holtz and Will are fun characters that goes through a healing adventure when she takes up with the Hides of Hell, a motorcycle gang. The adventure that follows is very enjoyable, and kept me turning the pages. I'd recommend this book to my friends

This book is one young readers will love. We met Will in the author's first book "Dealing with Blue". Will is having a hard time getting over the loss of his mother. His friend, Miki, who has a crush on Will, thinks she knows just the therapy he needs and it's a trip with his Dad's buddies who are the motorcycle gang "Hides of Hell". This becomes the ride of a lifetime with lots of fun, healing, emotion and love. A must read for young and old.
