Blockbuster legend Debra Dixon ignites high-powered suspense as the romance between an agent with a dark past and a tough Texas cop gets too close for comfort.
Jessica Daniels doesn’t do specialty work—anymore. Until a frantic call from her former handler’s young daughter puts her back in the game. The man who ran Jessica’s covert missions is missing, along with his black book. But dealing with the crisis her own way proves impossible when detective Sullivan Kincaid makes it clear that she’s got a partner—and that he doesn’t trust her.
But Sullivan wants her . . . badly. Jessica is a woman hiding secrets and a past as brutal and dirty as his. Now she’s made his job and his life way too complicated. But as they take on a powerful man’s list of enemies, it’s impossible to separate danger from desire. Sullivan knows the bad guys are playing for keeps. But so is he. And he’ll take any risk to keep the woman he loves alive.

Interesting story but I think the amount of supposed "dark" details about the protagonists' pasts was a bit too much, especially when we get such a sweet but totally unsuitable epilogue.
I'm reading Goal, Motivation and Conflict by Debra Dixon, and wanted to see her advice in action. I can say this for her - she really walks the walk. Her writing is all goal, motivation and conflict, and she checks all the boxes in terms of suspense and back story and arcs and theme.
Maybe because I was reading it more as a study in plotting than for pleasure I didn't connect with the characters very much. Sully's backstory about an abusive father, in particular, didn't grab me, and he kind of got over his issues really fast as soon as Jessica was in a life or death situation.
But it was tightly written and I enjoyed the character of Iris and her psychic streak. I'd recommend it to people looking for a good, solid romantic suspense.
Loved this book! I was leery based on the author who recommended the book and the opening scene, but this turned out to be the most titillating love story with perfectly matched characters I've ever read. The relationship was exquisitely developed and I was greatly relieved to find that the violence wasn't excessive.
The perfect note for me was building the relationship on "I got your back". I felt I knew the characters, their struggles with their own souls. And the epilogue was the cherry on top--magnificent.
I'm looking up more of Debra Dixon's stories as well as more Loveswept authors!
