Australian, Nikki Logan, lives on the edge of a string of wetlands south of Perth, Western Australia with her partner and a menagerie of animals. She writes captivating, nature-based stories full of romance in descriptive natural environments for Harlequin Enterprises and Entangled Publishing. She believes the danger and richness of wild places perfectly mirror the passion and risk of falling in love.
Nikki wrote her first full-length book in 2007 ('Wild Encounter' a romantic suspense set in the wilds of Zambia amidst the wildlife smuggling industry) when she needed a project to fill six months of accrued annual leave. Well and truly bitten by the writing-bug, she wrote a number of category-length novels after her return to work and hasn’t stopped since. She’s written fifteen books for Harlequin and now Entangled as well.
Nikki’s determined to reveal through her writing what she finds so enriching, courageous and tenacious about wildlife. Writing nature-based romance is the perfect opportunity to blend what she loves reading with what she loves doing and maybe sneak beautiful creatures and their environments into fertile reader imaginations all over the world through beautiful love stories.
B- at AAR, so 3.5 starsStranded With Her Rescuer is what some might call a problem book. On the one hand, it’s well written and the characters click together very well. However, their love story relies on a plot device that I suspect might turn off more than a few readers. If you can handle how Will and Kitty come together, you will probably love this book. If you can’t, you’ll likely find your joy somewhat clouded.
So, what do I mean by a problem plot device? Well, Kitty and Will first meet five years before the main plot action. Kitty is a freelance filmmaker, on the trail of an intriguing story in Nepal. While there, she is staying with Will, who has a rescue dog operation – and he’s married. In fact, Kitty and Will’s wife are getting along famously. We learn in the first few pages that Will feels greatly attracted to Kitty and also that his marriage has hit some rough spots. In an effort to head off more trouble, he abruptly asks Kitty to leave.
Now we fast-foward to the present and find Kitty now working for a TV network, and once more on the trail of a story that she needs to edit and turn in. Unfortunately, her plane has to make an emergency landing in Churchill, Canada. The town quickly fills up and soon the airport has placed everyone in lodging except her. Luckily, an employee remembers a search and rescue man who lives alone outside of town. Three guesses as to who that might be?
Lettura consigliata!
If you can get past one major hang-up, this story of not-quite-lovers accidentally reunited through an emergency landing will be a wonderful read.
In Stranded with Her Rescuer, author Nikki Logan gives us a glimpse at life and love in a remote area of Canada. This book is a stand-alone book and is not a part of a series. It is a romance novel published under Harlequin’s ‘Romance’ category which specializes in emotionally intimate stories of falling in love.
There are tropes and hooks (and otherwise descriptions) that I noted and will include at the end of my review.
Kitty’s life took a turn 5 years previously when she was asked to leave Will’s home in Nepal; feeling hurt, she focused hard on her work. Will, meanwhile, had a turbulent 5 years including the death of his wife and several dogs; he moved back to Canada as a way to distance himself from the disaster that took his wife, and as a way to keep himself busy while starting over. When Kitty’s plane makes an emergency landing in none other than the very location Will now calls home, the two of them reconnect. While keeping up their emotional walls, they begin to find cracks in their own emotional-defense and find that old sizzle of love rekindling.
Hang tight with me as I’m going to go through my biggest issue with this story, but then will dip into redeeming qualities.
The main issue I had with this novel is a hovering feeling of borderline infidelity via an emotional affair that, while it wasn’t spoken, was there. When Kitty and Will originally meet 5 years before the novel, Will is married to a woman named Marcella. Kitty stayed with Will and Marcella for, I believe, 10 days before Will asked her to leave. During that time it had become apparent that Kitty was developing feelings for Will; Will denied his feelings for Kitty until the events in the novel unfold and he realizes he loved her all along.
While this sounds romantic, the part I can’t shake is that Will was married while the two of them were basically falling for each other 5 years previously. To me, that treads too close to infidelity on an emotional level. I like romance novels to be a bit of a safe place where I don’t need to worry about things like that popping up.
There is a part in chapter six where Kitty is upset because she thought Will sent her away because she had feelings for him, not because of his feelings for her. She even said to him “I cannot believe you!” She seemed upset that he, a married man at the time, did not tell her that he was developing feelings for her. The book says “Because if she had known [that the attraction was mutual], she would have left long before being asked.” In other words, she was okay with sticking around while falling in love with another woman’s husband, allowing herself to indulge in those feelings.
If you think that the late wife is only brought up once or twice, you are wrong. Marcella is brought up several times and it keeps bringing me back to this whole yucky feeling that neither of them should have been developing feelings for each other. It is a personal ‘no no’ for me, but I understand this may not affect other readers. But as someone who has been cheated on in multiple past relationships, I couldn’t help but feel sympathy for Marcella, knowing that she was married to a man who was actually in love with another woman.
I’d also like to point out that they were only together for about 10 days previously and, as it is described, didn’t spend an overwhelming amount of time together. While I enjoy romance novels that have some unbelievable moments, this is a bit too far out there for me to take seriously. If neither character was able to ‘get over’ the other after 5 years when they only spent 10 days together, that seems more like a matter for therapy to handle.
If the whole ‘how they met’ situation was a bit different, this novel would get an easy 4.0-4.5 rating from me. If, for example, Will had lost Marcella immediately before he and Kitty met and he just wasn’t willing to open up to let Kitty in because he was still grieving, then everything played out how it did… I would be completely okay with that.
Besides the above, I only have a small minor gripe about how Kitty seems a bit childish and even a little self-centered at times. Harlequin’s Romance category prides itself in relatable heroines… which I do not find Kitty to be. At one point, someone called her “ma’am” and Kitty was bothered by it, being that she was 28. I am 29 and do not find myself bothered one bit when being called “ma’am.”
Otherwise, their love story was adorable. There are dogs and puppies which is always a nice bonus to a good romance. The author’s writing is wonderful and I found it an easy read besides my major point above. Nikki Logan excelled at describing nature, especially in this remote town of Churchill, Canada during what is repeatedly referred to as “bear season.” I loved the descriptions of nature, the outdoor adventures, and the feeling of being taken away on a bit of a vacation for just a little while even though I was merely immersed in the pages. If you are the type that likes to learn a little bit from reading, you’ll likely learn a thing or two within the pages of this book.
As-is, I would have to give this 3.25/5. The borderline emotional affair was just too much for me to get over to really enjoy the story the way I wish I could.
Would I recommend this? Yes, but only if you are okay with knowing the hero and heroine met while the hero was married, and being reminded of it several times throughout the story. It does provide a nice vacation of the mind to a remote town in Canada, so you can see the bears and live it for a little while. If you are like me and find that borderline infidelity scratches too close to your own wounds, then you may wish to keep this story at bay or go into it knowing exactly what to expect.
