Each year my family reads all the Goodreads-award-nominated picture books. Brain Benders: Think Outside the Box is #14 (of 20) for 2020. It’s a puzzle book, but you kinda have to own it because it encourages you to write on it, cut images out of it and make them into shapes, and so on. The rating of four stars is a family average rating.
Hank (14): 5 stars. It was really fun to do all of it. [and he did! This is the kind of book Hank loves, an activity or puzzle book]
Harry (15): 3 stars. Would be fun to do, but it will be drawn on.
Tara: 4 stars. Cool idea. I love this kind of puzzle book. But it’ll be hard not to have kids drawing on it.
Dave: 3 stars. Probably fun for kids. I might have gotten something like myself when I was in elementary school from Scholastic Books--my monthly bundle!! But is it one of the top twenty books for kids in this whole country in 2020??! Really? And seriously, is titling a book with the cliched "think outside the box" really thinking outside the box? But okay, the puzzles are ok, standard fare.
Have some tracing paper to master the good mazes in this book. In addition to mazes, there are all kinds of brain challenges and games for one. Great for inquisitive kids and old folks like me that simply enjoy mazes and brain puzzles.
